The longnose killifish is a tough, euryhaline killifish of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coastal plain, equally at home in open marine bays, hypersaline tidal creeks, and the brackish fringes of estuaries from northeastern Florida to the western Gulf coast of Texas and Mexico. A non-annual species of permanent intertidal and supralittoral habitats, it has evolved one of the most unusual spawning strategies in the genus: eggs are deposited in phase with semilunar tidal cycles, adhering to sand, gravel, or shoreline vegetation in the intertidal zone and incubating intermittently exposed to air. The IUCN assesses the longnose killifish as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulus similis was described by Spencer Fullerton Baird and Charles Frédéric Girard in 1853, based on material collected near Indianola, Texas, during the United States–Mexico Boundary Survey; the original collector was John H. Clark. Baird and Girard placed the species in the genus Hydrargyra, giving the original combination Hydrargyra similis, published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (vol. 6, p. 389). The parentheses surrounding the authority in the current usage indicate that the species has since been transferred to Fundulus, the genus under which Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises it as valid.

Fundulus is a large North American genus within the family Fundulidae, closely allied to topminnows and toothcarp killifishes of the Atlantic and Gulf drainages. Fundulus similis falls within the broadly estuarine and coastal assemblage of the genus, alongside well-known relatives such as F. heteroclitus (mummichog) and F. grandis (Gulf killifish). The specific epithet similis is Latin for 'similar' or 'resembling', almost certainly referring to the species' similarity to other Fundulus at the time of description, when the group's taxonomy was still being worked out.

Morphology

The longnose killifish is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of approximately 5–6 in standard length — FishBase records 5 in SL, while the STRI Caribbean Shorefishes database gives 6 in. The body is more slender than in many congeners, and the snout is noticeably pointed relative to shorter-snouted relatives, giving the species its common name. The mouth is small to moderate in size and positioned at the tip of the snout, adapted for picking prey from the surface and from shallow substrates.

Colouration in life is olive to greyish-green dorsally, grading to pale or silvery on the flanks and belly. Males typically display a series of vertical dark bars or blotches on the flanks, which become more pronounced during courtship; females tend to show a less contrasted pattern. The fins are plain and hyaline in females; males may develop faint pigmentation in the dorsal and caudal fins during the breeding season. Sexual dimorphism is comparatively modest by killifish standards, with females distinguishable by fuller body depth when gravid.

Habitat

Fundulus similis is a coastal obligate, native to the shallow marine, brackish, and estuarine habitats of the US Atlantic coast (northeastern Florida, including the Florida Keys) and the Gulf of Mexico coast west to Texas and into the northwestern Gulf shores of Mexico. It inhabits bays, estuaries, coastal marshes, tidal creeks, and intertidal flats — environments characterised by fluctuating salinity, temperature, and oxygen concentration over tidal cycles. FishBase notes a salinity tolerance at or near full marine (35 ppt), and the species has been recorded at full oceanic salinity as well as brackish conditions where freshwater inflows dilute coastal waters.

This is a fish of permanent, non-seasonal waters: unlike many killifishes of the South American and African interior, F. similis lives in habitats that persist year-round, tied to the tidal rhythms of the coast rather than to wet-dry seasonal cycles. It tolerates the normoxic-to-hypoxic swings that occur in intertidal pools and marsh channels at low tide, a resilience shared across the estuarine Fundulus. Water temperatures recorded around 75 °F (FishBase) reflect subtropical Gulf coast conditions, though the species experiences wider seasonal swings in the field.

The species shares its habitat with other euryhaline killifishes and small coastal fishes. Its intertidal zone usage — particularly the supralittoral fringe used for spawning — is a distinctive ecological signature that distinguishes it from strictly subtidal relatives.

Feeding

The longnose killifish is an opportunistic carnivore-omnivore of the intertidal and estuarine zone. The STRI Caribbean Shorefishes database records its diet as zooplankton, mobile benthic crustaceans (shrimps and crabs), benthic gastropods and bivalves, and benthic microalgae. This breadth is typical of estuarine Fundulus, which exploit whatever prey is available across tidal cycles: small crustaceans and invertebrates at high tide when the marsh surface floods, and microalgae or settled invertebrates when the fish retreat to channels at low water.

The relatively pointed snout and terminal mouth are suited to picking individual prey items from the benthos and water column, rather than the surface skimming seen in some topminnows. In aquarium conditions, F. similis accepts small live and frozen invertebrates — brine shrimp, bloodworm, small amphipods — as well as quality dried foods. Its diet breadth means it is not a fussy feeder, though meaty foods of appropriate size should form the core of captive rations.

Mating

The longnose killifish employs a semilunar spawning strategy synchronised to tidal cycles, a behaviour documented in NOAA research on intertidal killifish reproduction. Spawning is concentrated around spring high tides — the largest tidal excursions that occur approximately every two weeks around new and full moons — when rising water levels briefly access the supralittoral zone at the top of the beach or marsh edge. This tidal synchrony means that spawning peaks are predictable and linked to lunar phase rather than daily or purely seasonal cues.

Males court females in shallow water and along the intertidal fringe. The pair deposit adhesive eggs on or among sand, fine gravel, or shoreline vegetation at the upper edge of the tidal reach. The coupling is consistent with the pattern seen across estuarine Fundulus: a lateral embrace during which eggs and milt are released together. The adhesive property of the eggs is critical to this strategy, anchoring them in place on the substrate as the tide recedes and exposing them to air during the interval before the next high tide.

Breeding

Eggs deposited in the intertidal zone incubate in an unusual intermittent-aerial environment: they are wetted by each high tide and then exposed to air as the tide falls, cycling between aquatic and aerial conditions until they hatch. NOAA repository data confirm that the eggs are adapted to normoxic and hypoxic conditions and can tolerate periods of aerial exposure — an adaptation to a spawning microhabitat that would be lethal to most fish eggs. Hatching is triggered or facilitated by re-immersion with rising tidal water, a mechanism well-documented in related intertidal killifishes.

This breeding system classifies F. similis firmly as a non-annual killifish: there is no dry-season diapause, no buried egg stage requiring substrate manipulation, and no requirement for peat or seasonal rainfall to trigger hatching. In the aquarium, spawning mops or fine-leaved plants positioned near the water surface serve as a functional substitute for shoreline vegetation, and eggs collected from the mop can be incubated in damp (not submerged) conditions to mimic the intermittent-aerial environment, then wetted to trigger hatching. The spawning mop approach is confirmed by hobbyist reports consistent with this species' adhesive-egg, plant-or-substrate-spawner biology. Incubation duration and clutch size are not well-characterised in the literature, but the continuous nature of non-annual spawning means a healthy pair will produce eggs at regular intervals throughout the warmer months.

In the aquarium

Fundulus similis is a challenging aquarium subject rather than an easy beginner killifish. FishBase describes it as difficult to maintain, a rating that reflects its salt requirement and specialised habitat needs more than its disposition. The fish requires brackish to full marine salt levels — keeping it in fresh water long-term is not appropriate. A specific gravity of 1.005–1.015 (low to mid-brackish) is a practical starting point, though the species can tolerate full marine salinity. Temperature around 72–79 °F suits it well for most of the year, with a modest winter drop for temperate Atlantic coast populations.

Because the species is not a standard ornamental killifish in the hobbyist trade, dedicated specialist keeping is the typical context. A species aquarium or pairing with other euryhaline coastal species is the safest approach. Substrate of fine sand, robust plants tolerant of salt (vallisneria, some mangrove root setups), and open swimming space with gentle flow suits its bay and marsh background. Spawning mops, surface plants, or gravel patches near the waterline give the pair appropriate egg-deposition sites. The brackish specialist community has noted its spawning behaviour in captivity, consistent with the tidal-synchronous, adhesive-egg biology observed in the field.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulus similis as Least Concern (LC), with the most recent assessment dated January 2019. The species has a reasonably broad coastal distribution across the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Florida coast, occupying a suite of estuarine habitat types that, while subject to ongoing human modification, remain relatively extensive compared to freshwater spring endemics or isolated lake populations. No acute population collapse or restricted single-locality vulnerability is recorded for this species.

Nevertheless, the habitats F. similis depends on — coastal marshes, intertidal flats, estuaries, and tidal creeks — are among the most threatened ecosystems on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of North America. Coastal development, dredging, filling of salt marshes, runoff-driven eutrophication, and the disruption of natural tidal hydrology through hardened shorelines all degrade the intertidal spawning microhabitats on which this species' semilunar reproductive strategy depends. Climate-change-driven sea-level rise may in the longer term reshape the supralittoral spawning zone. While the Least Concern listing is appropriate for the species' current overall status, the integrity of coastal estuarine systems across its range warrants monitoring.
