Fundulus waccamensis was described in 1946 by Carl L. Hubbs and Edward C. Raney, with the type locality given as Lake Waccamaw, Columbus County, North Carolina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Fundulus waccamensis Hubbs & Raney, 1946, placed in the genus Fundulus within the family Fundulidae — the North American topminnows.
The specific epithet waccamensis is a toponym, meaning 'of Waccamaw', directly referencing the lake in which the type series was collected. The name Lake Waccamaw is itself derived from a Siouan word, and the lake sits in the upper Cape Fear River drainage on the North Carolina Coastal Plain. The species has no formally recognised subspecies.
Molecular and morphological work has confirmed that F. waccamensis is most closely related to the widespread banded killifish, Fundulus diaphanus. The two are thought to share a common ancestor whose range contracted — or whose populations became isolated — when the lake basins of the Carolina Coastal Plain were effectively cut off from the broader river network. Over time the isolated lake populations accumulated enough differentiation to be recognised as a distinct species. Morphology
Fundulus waccamensis is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 4 in (FishBase), though wild adults are typically smaller. The body form is characteristic of Fundulus: a somewhat flattened head, a terminal to slightly upturned mouth, and a body tapering evenly to the caudal peduncle. Scales are large and cycloid, the lateral line is present, and the dorsal fin originates well posterior of the midpoint of the body.
Colouration follows the general Fundulus pattern — an olivaceous to pale brown ground on the back and upper flanks, fading to cream or silver on the belly, with faint or indistinct lateral banding that is less well-defined than in F. diaphanus. Breeding males develop brighter contrast and may show a subdued golden or brassy sheen on the flanks. Females are plainer and become noticeably fuller-bellied when gravid.
A behavioural distinction from many of its closest relatives is worth noting: hobbyists who have kept the species report that it is a mid-water swimmer rather than a surface-hugging fish in the manner of many North American killies. Feeding
Fundulus waccamensis is a dietary generalist in the Fundulus mould, feeding primarily on benthic invertebrates and plant material according to FishBase records. The diet in the wild likely includes small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, worms, and algal or detrital vegetable matter — the typical suite of foods available in the shallow, vegetated margins of warm Coastal Plain lakes.
In captivity the species feeds readily. Hobbyists who have worked with it report success conditioning adults with chopped red wiggler earthworms, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and small aquatic invertebrates. Mating
Fundulus waccamensis is a non-annual killifish — it lives in permanent lakes and does not produce diapausing eggs buried in substrate. Its reproductive mode is that of a plant or mop spawner: pairs deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, or spawning mops, with eggs incubating submerged in water over a period of days to weeks without any diapause phase.

Water temperature of around 68–77 °F suits the species well, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Unlike many surface-dwelling North American killies, F. waccamensis tends to occupy the mid-water column, which affects tank design — mid-water cover such as fine-leaved stem plants or floating vegetation is appreciated more than surface cover.
