The Yucatan flagfish is a small, vivid pupfish endemic to the coastal lagoons, cenotes, and brackish marshes of the Yucatán Peninsula and northern Belize — one of the few killifish in the world regularly recorded at salinities exceeding seawater. Males develop a reticulated, jewel-like pattern of scales against a pale body as they mature; females retain bold vertical bars that fade with age. Described by Carl Hubbs in 1936 from material collected near Progreso, Yucatán, the species occupies an unusual taxonomic position: it was long lumped with the North American flagfish Jordanella floridae but molecular and morphological work from the 1990s restored the monotypic genus Garmanella on the strength of its genetic distinctiveness. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2018, noting stable populations across a range that spans protected areas including the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, but urban development along the Caribbean coast and the ornamental trade remain active pressures.

Taxonomy & naming

Garmanella pulchra was described by the American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs in 1936, in the monograph 'Fishes of the Yucatan Peninsula' published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington (Publication 457). The type locality is a collection site 3 mi east of Progreso, Yucatán, Mexico, approximately 89°39' W, 21°15' N — a coastal locality near the Gulf shore.

The generic history of the species is complicated. Hubbs erected the genus Garmanella to hold it, naming it in honour of Dr. Samuel Trevor Walton Garman, the nineteenth-century Harvard ichthyologist who contributed substantially to the study of Neotropical fishes. In 1981, Lynne Parenti's comprehensive phylogenetic revision of the order Cyprinodontiformes synonymised Garmanella with Jordanella, treating G. pulchra as a junior synonym of the North American flagfish Jordanella floridae complex. That arrangement was challenged by subsequent molecular work: Parker and Kornfield (1995) and Costa (1997) both found that the Yucatán taxon is genetically distinct enough to warrant its own genus, and Garmanella was re-established accordingly. The IUCN currently lists the species under the name Jordanella pulchra, reflecting an alternative current treatment, but the name Garmanella pulchra remains in active use among killifish hobbyists and in much of the systematic literature.

The species epithet pulchra is the Latin feminine form of pulcher, meaning 'beautiful' — Hubbs's assessment of the male's reticulated, chromatic patterning.

Morphology

Garmanella pulchra is a compact, deep-bodied fish. Maximum size is recorded as approximately 2.5 in standard length (It Rains Fishes), though FishBase gives figures of 1.5 in TL for typical males and up to 2.5 in TL for larger individuals; the IUCN assessment notes a maximum of 1.5 in SL based on field-collected specimens from Celestún, suggesting that fish approaching 2.5 in are exceptional. The dorsal fin carries 15–17 soft rays and the anal fin 8–10, counts that are useful for distinguishing Garmanella from the broadly similar Jordanella floridae.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Females display a series of bold, dark vertical bars across the body; these bars narrow and become less distinct as the fish ages and grows. Males develop an elaborate reticulated pattern — a fine network of pigmented scale margins over the flanks — that gives a mosaic or jewelled effect quite unlike the barred female pattern. Both sexes are relatively deep-bodied, giving the fish a chunky profile reminiscent of a small sunfish rather than the slender silhouette of most toothcarps.

Habitat

The Yucatan flagfish is restricted to the Yucatán Peninsula of southern Mexico (the states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo) and adjacent northern Belize, with records from Corozal Bay. Within this range it occupies an ecologically unusual set of water bodies: coastal lagoons and mangrove-fringed estuaries (including the large Laguna de Términos system), brackish seasonal and permanent lakes, saline and hypersaline marshes, cenotes (the limestone sinkholes characteristic of the Yucatán karst), and tidal zones near Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. The IUCN assessment records salinities of 40–55 ppt for fish collected in the Ría Lagartos lagoon system — values well above full seawater — and more typical conditions of 10–15 ppt upstream salinity gradient in areas such as Celestún.

Water depths at collection sites are generally shallow, rarely exceeding 3 ft, over substrates of marl, sand, decomposing plant matter, rocks, or mud. Hard, alkaline, warm conditions predominate: temperatures of 73–84 °F are recorded in IUCN habitat assessments, consistent with the warm, shallow coastal habitats of the peninsula. The range encompasses several protected areas, including the Celestún Biosphere Reserve (where 759 specimens were recorded across a size range of 0.5–1 in in a single survey), Isla Contoy, and the Chacmochuc protected area near Cancún.

Feeding

In the wild, Garmanella pulchra is primarily herbivorous, feeding on microalgae and filamentous algae that coat hard substrates and the surfaces of submerged vegetation in its shallow, sun-lit habitats. The IUCN assessment also records invertebrate prey items including ostracods, tanaidaceans, and amphipods, indicating that the species is an opportunistic omnivore willing to take small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates alongside its plant diet.

In the aquarium, the species should receive a diet weighted toward vegetable matter — high-quality herbivore flakes, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers — supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrate foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and artemia nauplii. A diet too heavily skewed toward animal protein in captivity is reported to compromise long-term health.

Mating

Garmanella pulchra is a non-annual killifish that breeds in permanent or near-permanent water bodies; it does not produce diapausing eggs and is not a soil-spawner. Spawning follows the pattern typical of plant-spawning toothcarps: a male courts a female over an extended period, and the pair deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, or spawning mops rather than in a single massed release.

Males are highly territorial and will pursue and harass females persistently during courtship, behaviour that is markedly more aggressive than that of many small toothcarps. In the wild, the complex reticulated coloration of the male is presumably important in mate assessment; females, with their vertical-bar pattern, are comparatively cryptic. Dominant males will also dispute spawning sites and access to females aggressively with rival males.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and approximately 0.5 in in diameter, white in colour, and deposited in the lower sections of spawning mops or among fine plant roots — below the surface rather than at the waterline. The pair deposit eggs over a period of days or weeks; it is not a single spawning event. Incubation is temperature-dependent and lasts approximately two weeks at typical aquarium temperatures. Newly hatched fry are free-swimming almost immediately after hatching and are large enough to accept newly hatched artemia nauplii from the start; no infusoria stage is required.

It Rains Fishes records that fry reach sexual maturity in approximately five months under aquarium conditions — a faster development rate than most annual killifish but broadly consistent with the non-annual life strategy. The hobbyist recommendation is to maintain males and females separately except for supervised spawning sessions, given the intensity of male courtship pressure. Water for both conditioning and breeding should be hard and alkaline; the addition of aquarium salt to achieve a low-level brackish condition (around 1.010 specific gravity) is widely recommended for this species, reflecting the naturally brackish character of most of its native habitats.

In the aquarium

The Yucatan flagfish is rated a challenging species by experienced hobbyists, not because of exceptional sensitivity but because of its specific water chemistry requirements and the intensity of male aggression. Most aquarium water is too soft and acidic for the species to thrive long-term: hard, alkaline conditions (pH above 7.5, moderate to high hardness) with the addition of aquarium salt to maintain low-level brackishness (specific gravity around 1.010) are recommended to replicate the coastal lagoon and saline-lake habitats the species occupies in the wild.

Male-to-male aggression is pronounced, and keeping multiple males in a small aquarium leads to chronic harassment and injuries. A single male with two or three females, or a single pair, in a species tank of at least 23.5 in is the practical minimum. Décor should include floating or fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, and visual barriers — submerged roots and wood help break sightlines and reduce territorial displays. The species is benthopelagic and uses the mid-to-lower water column as well as the surface. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as the fish can jump.

Garmanella pulchra is not widely available in the aquarium trade but is maintained by killifish specialists and the killifish association network (AKA, BKA, and EKV affiliates). Because the species is rarely bred in commercial quantities, specimens typically come from hobbyist breeders, where provenance and conditioning records are available.

Conservation

The IUCN assessed Garmanella pulchra (under its listing name Jordanella pulchra) as Least Concern in 2018, published as part of the 2019-2 update of the Red List (Schmitter-Soto and Vega-Cendejas). The rationale was a stable population, a reasonably extensive coastal distribution (extent of occurrence estimated at 3,500–4,311 mi², area of occupancy 62–93 mi²), and occurrence within several protected areas including the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, Isla Contoy, and the Chacmochuc lagoon system near Cancún.

Despite the Least Concern listing, the assessors identified active threats. Urban and tourist development along the Quintana Roo coast — particularly around Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel — is progressively reducing and degrading coastal lagoon and mangrove habitat. The clearance of mangroves for hotel and marina development directly removes the brackish, sheltered-water habitats the species depends on. Water pollution from urban runoff and agricultural inputs is a secondary threat across the range. The species is also collected for the aquarium trade, though the assessment did not quantify trade pressure.

The restricted endemism of the species — confined to a single peninsula and its adjacent offshore islands — means that its vulnerability to localised habitat loss is inherently higher than the aggregate Least Concern category might suggest. Monitoring of populations in unprotected coastal lagoon systems, particularly in Quintana Roo, is warranted as development continues.
