The ocellated rivulus is a small, hardy killifish of mangrove edges, inland swamps, and brackish coastal pools along South America's Atlantic coast, with records extending to Central America, the Caribbean, and the southern tip of Florida. Reaching around 2.5 in total length, it belongs to a genus that contains the only known self-fertilising vertebrates — yet Kryptolebias ocellatus itself is gonochoristic, reproducing through conventional mating between distinct males and females. A non-annual species, it deposits adhesive eggs on aquatic plants and spawning mops rather than burying them in mud, and it tolerates a wide salinity range that spans fresh to fully brackish conditions. A 2011 revision by Costa separated it from the formerly synonymised K. hermaphroditus, restoring the name ocellatus for the gonochoristic lineage; the two species overlap in the broader mangrove zone but partition their microhabitats.

Taxonomy & naming

Kryptolebias ocellatus was originally described by R. Hensel in 1868, giving the authority as (Hensel, 1868) — the parentheses indicating the species has since been moved from its original genus to the current placement in Kryptolebias. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it as a valid species within the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes), and the genus Kryptolebias Costa, 2004 was erected to accommodate the mangrove rivulus group, previously scattered across Rivulus and allied genera.

For decades, specimens now assigned to K. ocellatus were treated as a synonym or population of the self-fertilising K. marmoratus — the mangrove rivulus of North American hobby fame. A 2011 taxonomic revision by Wilson J.E.M. Costa reorganised the complex, resurrecting K. ocellatus for the gonochoristic (conventionally sexed) populations of South and Central America and designating what had long been called 'ocellatus' in the northern range as K. hermaphroditus. The genomic study published in 2023 (Biodiversity Genomes) confirmed K. ocellatus as an obligate-outcrossing androdioecious lineage — males and hermaphrodites or females co-occur, but it is not the same self-fertilising reproductive system found in K. marmoratus and K. hermaphroditus.

The It Rains Fishes profile notes that hobbyists should be alert to the historical name confusion: older aquarium literature and collection-locality records labelled 'Rivulus ocellatus' or 'K. ocellatus' from northern localities may actually refer to what is now K. hermaphroditus. Material from the Rio de Janeiro coast, such as the 2023 genomic vouchers from the Piracão mangrove at Guaratiba (23°0′1.90″S, 43°34′51.50″W), represents the authentic K. ocellatus.

Morphology

Kryptolebias ocellatus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 2.5 in total length (FishBase; It Rains Fishes). The body plan is typical of the rivulus group: a rounded caudal fin, a relatively upturned mouth suited to surface-feeding, and patterning that includes the ocellated spot on the caudal peduncle from which the species takes its name — a dark, eye-like marking ringed with a pale halo.

Base colouration is an olive-brown to golden-tan on the flanks, with rows of small reddish-brown or brown spots that coalesce into horizontal dashes in males. Females are generally plainer, lacking the vivid spot patterns of males, and develop a distinct black spot on the dorsal fin base that serves as a sex-recognition signal in many rivulus-group species. Breeding males intensify in colour and may show iridescent highlights. The eggs of K. ocellatus are notably large relative to body size — approximately 0.5 in in diameter according to It Rains Fishes — consistent with the non-annual strategy of investing in fewer, well-provisioned offspring rather than producing large clutches of small diapausing eggs.

Habitat

The species occupies mangrove edges, inland swamps, and stagnant coastal pools along the Atlantic coast of South America, with confirmed populations in Brazil including the Guaratiba mangrove system at Rio de Janeiro. The broader Kryptolebias ocellatus complex in its revised sense extends through Central America and the Caribbean; the It Rains Fishes account distinguishes the microhabitat preference of K. ocellatus from that of the closely related K. hermaphroditus, noting that ocellatus tends to use inland swamps and stagnant pools of brackish to near-marine origin rather than the dense interior of mangrove root tangles where hermaphroditus is more characteristically found.

Water conditions in these environments are variable and often challenging: salinity fluctuates with tidal influence and seasonal rainfall, temperatures can climb substantially in shallow exposed pools, and dissolved oxygen is often low. FishBase records a temperature range of 64–75 °F and a pH up to 7.5 for the species, while the It Rains Fishes profile extends the thermal range to 68–86 °F in captivity and gives a recommended specific gravity of 1.010–1.015, confirming a preference for mildly brackish rather than freshwater conditions. The 2023 genomic vouchers were collected from a mangrove system, underlining the coastal estuarine association.

Feeding

Kryptolebias ocellatus is an opportunistic micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates, zooplankton, insect larvae, and worms associated with mangrove leaf litter, root surfaces, and the organic-rich substrate of coastal swamps. The upturned mouth is well suited to surface and near-surface feeding, taking insects and small crustaceans that collect at the water film.

In captivity the species accepts a wide range of protein-rich foods. The It Rains Fishes profile recommends high-protein live and frozen foods — artemia (brine shrimp), white worms, and daphnia — to maintain condition and stimulate spawning readiness. Juveniles grow quickly when supplied nauplii and micro-worms from their first week of free swimming. The species is not known to be herbivorous in any meaningful proportion; vegetable supplements are unnecessary though not harmful.

Mating

Unlike its genus-mates K. marmoratus and K. hermaphroditus — the only known self-fertilising vertebrates — Kryptolebias ocellatus is a gonochoristic species with separate males and females. The 2023 genomic study confirmed the lineage as androdioecious and obligate-outcrossing: successful reproduction requires pairing between individuals. Males in breeding condition display intensified colouration and actively court females.

The AKA profile notes that males can be aggressive during spawning and that pairs require adequate shelter and visual breaks to reduce stress on the female. Typical killifish courtship involves lateral displays, fin-spreading, and brief chases before the male positions alongside the female and eggs are extruded and fertilised in rapid succession. Because the species is a non-annual plant- or mop-spawner rather than a soil-burying annual, spawning occurs repeatedly over extended periods rather than in a concentrated seasonal event — pairs will spawn on and off across weeks or months in well-maintained aquaria.

Breeding

Kryptolebias ocellatus is a non-annual killifish: eggs are deposited individually on fine-leaved plants, floating moss, java moss, or commercial spawning mops and develop directly in the water column without a diapause phase. There is no soil-burying, no dry storage, and no obligate resting period. It Rains Fishes gives an incubation time of approximately two to three weeks at typical temperatures, after which the larvae hatch as fully formed miniature fish ready to take small live food.

Eggs are adhesive and approximately 0.5 in in diameter — large for the genus. A single pair will scatter eggs continuously over many days or weeks; regular inspection and removal of egg-bearing mops keeps the batch sizes manageable and prevents adults from consuming fry. Juveniles grow quickly and reach sexual maturity in five to seven months. The species is notably productive: FishBase records a minimum population doubling time of less than one year, reflecting high fecundity relative to body size. Lifespan in captivity has been reported at approximately three years. Adding a pinch of marine salt to raise specific gravity to around 1.005–1.010 (or slightly higher) during incubation and early rearing can improve larval vigour in line with the brackish natural habitat.

In the aquarium

Kryptolebias ocellatus adapts well to aquarium life and is an accessible species for hobbyists new to killifish, provided the brackish water requirement is respected. A species tank of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or trio; dense planting with fine-leaved species (hornwort, java moss) or floating mops gives the fish spawning sites and the cover that reduces male aggression toward females. A tight-fitting lid is important — killies are capable jumpers.

Water should be maintained at a specific gravity of roughly 1.005–1.015 (achievable with marine salt mix) at temperatures of 68–79 °F and a pH near neutral to slightly alkaline (above 7.0, consistent with the coastal saline origin). The species is not suitable for a standard freshwater community tank, and it should not be housed with fast, aggressive, or large species; in a brackish community it can coexist with similarly sized, salinity-tolerant species such as figure-eight puffer tankmates of appropriate size, mollies, or other coastal killifish. The diet described above — high-protein live and frozen foods — is straightforward to supply.

The species' appeal to killifish enthusiasts lies partly in the taxonomic history: as a gonochoristic Kryptolebias it offers a window into the evolutionary background of the self-fertilising lineage, and breeding pairs exhibit the typical killifish courtship displays that make the group rewarding to observe. Collection-locality purity is valued in the killi hobby, and hobbyists should source fish with documented provenance (ideally Brazilian Atlantic coast) to avoid mixing with what may prove to be the related K. hermaphroditus.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptolebias ocellatus as Least Concern (LC; 2018 assessment), based on a distribution that spans coastal South America — a range large enough to buffer against localised losses. FishBase likewise notes a population minimum doubling time of under a year, indicating high reproductive productivity at the population level. These metrics support the current benign rating.

Nonetheless, the mangrove and estuarine habitats on which the species depends face mounting pressure across its range. Atlantic-coast mangroves in Brazil and elsewhere have been reduced by decades of coastal development, aquaculture pond construction, and urban expansion; inland swamp habitats are drained for agriculture and infrastructure. Water quality in coastal lagoons and near-shore pools deteriorates from agricultural runoff and untreated sewage. The taxonomic reorganisation of 2011 also means that population monitoring has historically not distinguished K. ocellatus from K. hermaphroditus, so the baseline data for each species considered separately is limited. Future assessments may require more granular geographic analysis as habitat loss continues along the Atlantic coast of South America.
