Taxonomy & naming
Laciris pelagica was described by Melanie L. J. Stiassny and Didier Paugy in 1990, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Laciris pelagica (Stiassny & Paugy, 1990). The authority is presented in parentheses, indicating that the combination has been revised since the original description. The species is the sole member of the genus Laciris, which was erected to accommodate it.
The genus Laciris belongs to the family Poeciliidae in the broad modern circumscription — or within the lampeye subfamily Procatopodinae as recognised by several workers. Lampeyes (procatopodins) are a diverse assemblage of small African killifish sharing the characteristic iridescent blue-green or silvery light-organ patch situated above the eye, which glints conspicuously in direct illumination and is thought to function in intraspecific signalling in the dimly lit or turbid waters many lampeyes inhabit.
The specific epithet pelagica is from the Greek pelagos, meaning 'open sea' or 'open water', and refers to the species' habitat in the open, pelagic zone of Lake Edward — an unusual ecological niche for a killifish of this size and group.
Morphology
Laciris pelagica reaches up to 3 in total length (FishBase), placing it among the larger procatopodine lampeyes. The body form is slender and elongate in the manner typical of open-water lampeyes, adapted to life in the water column rather than among dense marginal vegetation or leaf litter.
As in all procatopodins, the most immediately recognisable feature is the iridescent supraocular patch — the 'lampeye' itself — a reflective, light-gathering organ above the pupil that produces a vivid blue or blue-green glow under appropriate lighting. The exact colouration of the body, fin patterns, and the extent of sexual dichromatism have not been extensively documented in the literature, and field observations of living specimens are sparse in the accessible English-language literature.
Habitat
Lake Edward occupies the Western Rift Valley on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. It is a large, permanently stratified rift lake sitting at approximately 2992 ft elevation, with broadly neutral to slightly alkaline water chemistry. FishBase records water parameters for Laciris pelagica at 77 °F, pH 7, and hardness around 5 dGH — conditions consistent with the well-buffered, relatively stable chemistry of East African rift lakes.
The species is notable for inhabiting the surface regions of open and deep water — a pelagic or epi-pelagic niche. This distinguishes it sharply from most other lampeyes, which are marginal, shallow-water fish associated with reeds, submerged roots, swamp edges, and slow streams. Occupying open lake water requires adaptations to variable oxygen levels, predator exposure, and the relatively featureless, unstructured environment of the limnetic zone. The species is not associated with seasonal or ephemeral water bodies; Lake Edward is a permanent, large lake with stable water levels by the standards of East African rift systems.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Laciris pelagica in the primary literature is sparse. By analogy with other lampeyes and with its open-water habitat, the species very likely feeds primarily on small zooplankton — copepods, cladocerans, and similar crustaceans — which constitute the dominant invertebrate prey available in the pelagic zone of African rift lakes. Aquatic insect larvae and small surface insects may also be taken where available near the shoreline or at the water surface.
In an aquarium context, the small mouth size typical of procatopodins constrains prey selection; appropriately sized live or frozen foods (daphnia, artemia nauplii, cyclops, small bloodworm) would represent a suitable diet.
Mating
Laciris pelagica is a non-annual lampeye, meaning its reproductive biology is not tied to the drying and refilling of seasonal pools. It is a continuous or intermittent spawner of permanent water. Procatopodine lampeyes in general scatter small batches of adhesive eggs among fine aquatic plants, root masses, or other submerged structure over an extended spawning period rather than producing a single large clutch; a few related genera deposit eggs in crevices.
Males of most lampeye species display the iridescent supraocular patch prominently during courtship, and the patch is widely assumed to function as a visual signal during mate choice. Specific courtship behaviour for Laciris pelagica has not been documented in the accessible literature, but the pelagic lifestyle of the species suggests spawning may occur in open water or at the surface among any available floating structure rather than in dense marginal vegetation.
Breeding
As a non-annual species, Laciris pelagica does not produce diapausing eggs capable of surviving substrate desiccation. Eggs are laid individually or in small batches, and development proceeds without dormancy — a continuous cycle dictated by water temperature and condition rather than by seasonal cues tied to rainfall and drought.
Detailed captive-breeding records for this species are not widely available in the English-language hobby or scientific literature. Given its procatopodine affinities, aquarists attempting to breed it would likely approach it in the manner of other non-annual African lampeyes: a well-planted or moss-filled tank, slightly reduced flow, and separation of eggs or provision of thick plant cover to prevent adult predation on newly hatched fry. Fry are typically very small and require appropriately fine first foods.
In the aquarium
Laciris pelagica is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade. Its relatively large size for a lampeye (up to 3 in TL) and its open-water schooling habits would make it a striking aquarium subject, but its endemism to a single African rift lake and the logistical difficulties of exporting from the DRC and Uganda mean that captive populations are vanishingly rare.
For any aquarist fortunate enough to obtain specimens, the species' pelagic nature suggests it would benefit from a long, spacious aquarium with open swimming space and low to moderate current. Water chemistry in line with its Lake Edward origin — neutral to slightly alkaline pH around 7, moderate hardness, temperature around 77 °F — would be appropriate. As a schooling species it should be kept in groups. The American Killifish Association lists this species in its database, and specialist killifish societies would be the primary route to locating captive-bred stock.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Laciris pelagica as Least Concern in 2021, with the assessment conducted by T. K. Twongo, Vianny Natugonza, and Laban Musinguzi of the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) in Uganda. The assessment notes no discernible widespread threats to the species at the time of evaluation.
Nevertheless, the species' entire known range is confined to Lake Edward, making it a single-lake endemic with limited distributional resilience. Lake Edward has experienced significant environmental pressures in recent decades, including heavy artisanal fishing pressure, sedimentation from deforestation in the surrounding catchment, and periodic water-quality changes linked to climate variability and anthropogenic inputs. Oil exploration concessions have been granted in parts of the Lake Edward basin, and the potential long-term impact on the lake's ecology remains an active concern among conservation scientists working in the Western Rift. The Least Concern status reflects the absence of documented population declines rather than the absence of threat, and continued monitoring of this endemic lampeye in the context of Lake Edward's broader ecological trajectory is warranted.
