Taxonomy & naming
Laimosemion dibaphus was first described by George Sprague Myers in 1927 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (series 9, volume 19, page 121), based on material from the Amazon region of Brazil. The original genus placement was Rivulus, and the species travelled under the combination Rivulus dibaphus for most of the twentieth century before the sweeping molecular and morphological revision of South American rivulines reassigned it to the resurrected genus Laimosemion. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Laimosemion dibaphus (Myers, 1927), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the change of genus since original description.
Laimosemion is a neotropical genus within the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes), grouping a cluster of non-annual rivulines that share permanent or semi-permanent lowland and forest-stream habitats across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guiana drainages. The specific epithet dibaphus is Greek in origin — dibaphos means 'twice-dipped' or 'double-dyed' — a reference to the two-toned or banded colour pattern of the type specimens as Myers saw them. The American Killifish Association has catalogued at least ten named collection localities for this species across the Tapajós, Jamari, and Santarém regions, reflecting the locality-based documentation culture that underpins killifish taxonomy and hobbyist record-keeping.
Morphology
Laimosemion dibaphus is a slender, moderately elongate killifish with a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase, male/unsexed). The body depth is approximately 21.5 % of standard length and the pre-dorsal distance roughly 71.4 % SL — figures that place the dorsal fin well to the rear, close to the caudal peduncle, as is typical for rivulines. Meristic counts from the itrainsfishes.net documentation give D 9–10, A 12–13, and a lateral-line scale count of 31; the egg diameter of 0.5 in and amber coloration are characteristic of the species' spawn.
Colouration in living males shows the iridescent blue-green or turquoise flank markings and reddish or orange spotting that recur across Laimosemion; females are the plainer sex, with a more uniform or subtly spotted pattern and a rounded rather than pointed caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is present but not as extreme as in some annual rivulines. The caudal fin in males may show extensions or a slightly pointed profile consistent with the genus.
Habitat
The species is native to the central and western Amazon basin of Brazil, with confirmed localities in the Tapajós drainage, the Rio Jamari (a right-bank tributary of the Madeira), the Santarém region of Pará, and the Oriximiná area — roughly a north-south band through Brazilian Pará and Rondônia state. The AKA documents ten collection localities, including Igarapé do Ajamuri, Igarapé Saracazinho, and a tributary named Urupuana, all in the central Amazon lowlands.
As a non-annual rivuline, Laimosemion dibaphus inhabits permanent or near-permanent water: shallow forest streams, igarapés (blackwater forest creeks), and sheltered pools within the Amazon floodplain mosaic that retain water year-round. FishBase records a temperature preference of 75–82 °F, a pH range of 6.5–7.5, and a hardness of 0.5–1.5 (dH), consistent with soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral Amazonian forest water rather than extreme blackwater. The fish is benthopelagic and non-migratory, associated with leaf litter, root mats, and the marginal vegetation of small watercourses.
Feeding
In the wild, Laimosemion dibaphus is a generalist carnivore of the forest stream, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and zooplankton — that abound in the leaf-litter and root-zone microhabitats it frequents. Like most rivulines it is a visual, surface-oriented ambush feeder as well as a benthic picker, and will take insects that fall onto the water surface.
In captivity the species does best on a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates. The specialist literature emphasises that daily provision of rich live food — Drosophila, small Tubifex, white worms, or similar — is the key to sustained spawning; pairs that are fed live food daily will produce eggs consistently, while those on dry food alone spawn poorly or not at all. Small frozen bloodworm and Artemia adults are useful supplements, and newly hatched Artemia nauplii are the standard first food for fry.
Mating
Laimosemion dibaphus is a non-annual killifish with a plant- and mop-spawning reproductive mode: the pair bond and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, Java moss, or floating spawning mops over an extended period rather than in a single mass-spawning event. This is the fundamental distinction from annual rivulines — there is no diapause, no buried peat phase, and no flood-recession life cycle. The fish are comparatively long-lived, reaching maturity at four to five months and persisting up to three years in captivity.
The pair spawns continuously when in good condition, producing five to fifteen adhesive amber eggs per day. Eggs are 0.5 in in diameter and are deposited individually or in small groups among plant stems or mop fibres near the surface or substrate. Males can be highly aggressive toward one another, and the specialist recommendation is to house pairs rather than groups; if two males have been separated and reintroduced they may fight severely.
Breeding
Spawning is most productive when the breeding pair receives live food daily. Eggs are removed from the mop or plant and incubated in a shallow container of soft, slightly acidic water at 75–79 °F; they hatch in approximately 14 days. Fungused eggs should be removed promptly to prevent spread. The incubation period is temperature-sensitive — cooler water extends it slightly, warmer water shortens it.
Fry are large enough at hatching to take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately; no infusoria stage is required. Growth is steady with regular feeding and small daily water changes, and young fish reach sexual maturity within four to five months. Because the adults show no parental care and will consume eggs left in the tank, egg-picking or a dedicated spawning vessel is the standard management approach. The closed-container method (mop, jar, periodic harvest) works well and matches the technique used for other Laimosemion and Rivulus-group species.
In the aquarium
Laimosemion dibaphus is a specialist fish held primarily by killifish hobbyists rather than the general fishkeeping public. It is rarely available through ordinary retail channels; obtaining it requires contact with AKA members or killifish auction networks where locality-coded stock is exchanged. Water requirements are undemanding by killifish standards: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 0.5–1.5 dH, 75–82 °F) maintained cleanly suits it well.
A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be kept in a small, well-covered aquarium of 10 US gal, densely planted or furnished with floating mops. The tight-fitting lid is mandatory — Laimosemion dibaphus is an excellent jumper, and an uncovered tank will result in a dead fish on the floor. The aquarium should have gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal), subdued lighting, and floating cover to reduce skittishness. Males may be aggressive toward each other; multiple males require considerably more space and visual barriers.
Outside active breeding management, the fish is straightforward to maintain: it accepts frozen foods, is disease-resistant under good conditions, and lives up to three years in captivity. Its appeal lies in its subtlety — the quiet, deliberate movements, the daily clutches of amber eggs, the bonded pair's interactions — rather than in dramatic colour displays. It is a rewarding species for the patient aquarist willing to engage with its husbandry on the fish's own terms.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Laimosemion dibaphus as Least Concern in 2020 (Brejão 2024, IUCN Red List Version 2025-2), citing a distribution across multiple tributaries within the Amazon basin that does not presently meet thresholds for a threatened category. The species is known from at least ten collection localities across the Tapajós, Jamari, and Santarém regions of Pará and Rondônia — a reasonably wide footprint for a small forest-stream killifish.
Nonetheless, the Amazonian tributaries it inhabits are subject to ongoing pressure from deforestation, small-scale gold mining, and agricultural expansion in the arc of deforestation that continues to advance into central and western Pará and Rondônia. Forest-stream killies are sensitive to canopy removal, which raises water temperatures, reduces leaf-litter food subsidies, and alters the water chemistry of the soft, shaded igarapés they depend on. Because the species is non-annual and tied to permanent water, it cannot exploit temporary inundations to colonise new habitat or evade degradation as some annual killifish can.
No targeted conservation measures are in place for the species. It is maintained in living collections by AKA and international killifish society members, where locality-coded stock traded under named collection codes serves as an informal ex-situ reservoir — a tradition that has preserved genetically distinct populations of many small neotropical killies that have since become difficult to find in the wild.
