Leptolebias marmoratus is a miniaturised annual killifish endemic to two tiny, isolated coastal basins — the Estrela and Inhomirim rivers — that drain into Guanabara Bay in the state of Rio de Janeiro, south-eastern Brazil. A rare inhabitant of shallow, shaded forest pools that dry out completely each year, it completes its entire above-ground existence in the wet season and survives the drought as diapausing eggs buried in the mud. Long a prized rarity in the killifish hobby and extensively documented in the Journal of the American Killifish Association, the species is now assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, its scraps of coastal Atlantic Forest habitat under relentless pressure from one of South America's most urbanised regions.

Taxonomy & naming

Leptolebias marmoratus was first described by Werner Ladiges in 1934 under the name Cynopoecilus marmoratus, with the type locality given as the vicinity of Nova Iguaçu (then Vila de Cava), Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Ladiges, 1934) — signals that the species has been moved since its original placement. GBIF's Catalog of Life entry records two subsequent synonyms: Cynolebias zingiberinus Myers, 1942 (the source of the English name 'Ginger Pearlfish'), and Cynopoecilus sicheleri Miranda Ribeiro, 1939. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) treats the valid name as Leptolebias marmoratus (Ladiges, 1934), placing the species in the family Rivulidae, subfamily Cynolebiinae — the South American annual killifishes.

The genus Leptolebias comprises a small group of miniaturised annual rivulids restricted to the Atlantic Forest drainages of south-eastern Brazil. The genus name combines the Greek leptos ('slender, small') with Lebias, a historic genus name for small cyprinodontoid fishes, conveying the diminutive build that defines the group. The specific epithet marmoratus is Latin for 'marbled', describing the irregular dark mottling on the flanks of preserved or stressed specimens.

A 2016 comparative phylogenetic study published in PLoS ONE (PMC4948875) placed Leptolebias within a broader analysis of habitat usage and body-size evolution across threatened Rivulidae, highlighting the genus alongside Nematolebias and Simpsonichthys as exemplars of the miniaturised, forest-pool annual life history.

Morphology

Leptolebias marmoratus is a very small fish: FishBase records a maximum total length of 1 in, placing it firmly among the dwarf annuals of the subfamily. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with the cylindrical, slightly rounded cross-section typical of fossorial annual killies that burrow into soft substrate. Meristics recorded by FishBase are 15–17 soft dorsal rays and 18–21 soft anal rays — relatively high counts consistent with other Cynolebiinae.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as is usual in annual rivulids. Males develop vivid colouration: a warm brownish-olive to reddish-amber base scattered with iridescent blue-green scales that produce the 'marbled' or 'ginger pearlfish' appearance for which early synonyms were coined. The dorsal fin in males is triangular with a pointed tip that, in fully developed individuals, reaches toward the middle of the caudal fin — a display structure. Females are substantially plainer, with a rounded dorsal fin, a more uniformly olive-brown ground colour, and reduced or absent iridescent markings; ripe females are visibly deeper-bodied in the abdominal region.

The coloration of males intensifies under good conditions and dims rapidly under stress, so freshly collected or recently disturbed specimens may look quite different from settled aquarium fish in peak condition.

Habitat

The species is confined to shallow, temporary forest pools within the Atlantic Forest coastal strip of Rio de Janeiro state, principally in the Estrela and Inhomirim river basins — two small, hydrologically isolated catchments that together drain a restricted area into Guanabara Bay. Collection records centre on Vila de Cava (Nova Iguaçu municipality) and Inhomirim, both in the Baixada Fluminense lowlands to the north-west of Guanabara Bay.

FishBase describes the typical microhabitat as clear, shallow pools of roughly 12 in depth within forested settings that carry no emergent aquatic vegetation — the substrate is soft detritus and mud into which adults burrow to spawn. The water is tropical in temperature and, based on the Atlantic Forest pool context, likely soft and acidic to mildly acidic; precise pH and conductivity data are not available in the published record for this species.

Because the basins drain into coastal Guanabara Bay and receive high year-round rainfall from the Serra dos Órgãos, the seasonality driving pool desiccation is less extreme than on the open cerrado or pampas, but even coastal Atlantic Forest pools in south-eastern Brazil undergo dry-season drawdown sufficient to eliminate standing water and expose the mud substrate where eggs must survive until the rains return.

Feeding

Leptolebias marmoratus, like all members of the Cynolebiinae, is a generalised carnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates available in the temporary pools it inhabits: aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and zooplankton are all typical prey for a killfish of this size and guild. No published dietary studies specific to this species are available in the literature surveyed.

In captivity the fish readily accepts live and frozen foods scaled to its small mouth: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, small bloodworm, micro-worm, and similar invertebrate fare. High-quality prepared micro-pellets are taken by acclimated individuals, but live or frozen food maintains better condition and colour in males and ensures females develop properly for spawning. Feeding frequency should be moderate — small, daily rations rather than large infrequent meals suit the metabolism of a miniature annual species.

Mating

Leptolebias marmoratus is an annual killifish with substrate-spawning courtship and no parental care — the reproductive strategy typical of the Cynolebiinae subfamily. Males are vigorously competitive and display intensely to females and to rival males, spreading the triangular dorsal fin and fanning the tail to show their full colouration. In a pool or aquarium with multiple males, dominance hierarchies form quickly, and subdominant males may be harassed to exhaustion; pairs or trios with a single dominant male are the practical unit for managed breeding.

Courtship is initiated by the male approaching and positioning alongside the female. When she is receptive, the pair aligns flank-to-flank and dives together toward the substrate. The actual spawning act is a brief, vigorous embrace in which both fish drive partially into the soft mud, depositing a small number of eggs at each dive. The sequence repeats many times across a spawning session. Eggs are laid one to a few at a time, individually buried, with no external egg mass.

Breeding

The defining feature of Leptolebias marmoratus reproduction is embryonic diapause — the capacity of buried eggs to arrest development and survive months of complete desiccation while their parent pool dries up. When the rains return and the pool refills, eggs resume development and hatch within days to weeks depending on water temperature and how far through development arrest occurred. This adaptation, shared across the Cynolebiinae and the African annual killifishes, is one of the most remarkable life-history strategies in freshwater fish.

In the hobby, the standard peat-spawning method is used: a layer of dampened peat or coconut coir is placed in the bottom of the breeding tank or a separate spawning container. The pair spawns into this medium over several weeks. The peat is then removed, pressed lightly to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag or container at approximately 72–77 °F for two to three months to simulate the dry season. The bag is then gently rewetted with aged or rain water to trigger hatching. Fry are tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria, Paramecium, or commercial fry powder — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii.

Adult fish are short-lived even by annual-killi standards; wild individuals complete a full life cycle within one wet season, and even well-maintained aquarium specimens rarely survive much beyond 12–18 months. This means breeding stock must be maintained across generations to keep the line going, and hobbyist preservation networks have been critical to sustaining captive populations of this Critically Endangered species. In the aquarium

Leptolebias marmoratus is challenging to maintain and is a fish for specialist killifish keepers rather than community aquarists. FishBase rates it as very difficult to maintain — a classification reflecting its requirements for soft, slightly acidic water, specific spawning substrate, a dry-season simulation cycle, very small live foods, and a delicate constitution that tolerates neither poor water quality nor aggressive tankmates.

A small, well-planted species tank of 5.5–10 US gal is appropriate; the species does not require a large footprint given its miniature size, but it benefits from dense cover — floating plants, fine-leaved stem plants, and leaf litter on the substrate reduce stress and give females refuge from persistent males. Water temperature should be maintained in the tropical range (approximately 72–79 °F); the species is intolerant of the higher temperatures that many community fish tolerate without difficulty. Filtration must be gentle — a sponge filter or air-driven box filter prevents the current stress that can occur with power filters in a small tank.

The fish's Critically Endangered status adds a conservation dimension to keeping it: responsible hobbyists who maintain and exchange peat bags through established killifish clubs contribute meaningfully to ex-situ preservation of a species with a very small and declining wild population.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Leptolebias marmoratus as Critically Endangered in November 2018, reflecting the species' extreme range restriction, declining habitat quality, and the intensity of human pressure on its native Baixada Fluminense lowlands. The entire wild range — the Estrela and Inhomirim basins draining into Guanabara Bay, principally around Nova Iguaçu and Inhomirim — lies within one of Brazil's most densely urbanised and industrialised corridors. Atlantic Forest cover in the Baixada Fluminense has been reduced to fragments under chronic pressure from urban expansion, drainage of low-lying wetlands for agriculture and development, pollution from domestic and industrial wastewater, and the introduction of invasive species including the Nile tilapia and mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.).

The species' dependence on shallow, temporary forest pools means it is acutely vulnerable to any land-use change that drains, fills, or permanently floods those pools — from road building to cattle grazing to housing development. Its clear, soft-water pool habitat is also susceptible to sedimentation following deforestation of catchment hillslopes. Because the two known basins are hydrologically isolated from each other and from adjacent river systems, the species has no dispersal corridor through which it could colonise new habitat or recolonise extirpated sites.

Ex-situ hobbyist collections maintained through the American Killifish Association and European killifish networks represent a documented insurance population, and the AKA's JAKA archive spanning 1966–2023 forms a significant body of captive-husbandry and natural-history data. In-situ recovery, however, requires habitat protection within Rio de Janeiro state — specifically the preservation and restoration of Atlantic Forest fragments around the Baixada Fluminense pools — and active management of invasive fish introductions in the basins.
