Melanorivulus punctatus is a small, slender South American rivuline reaching about 1.5 in standard length, native to the swampy grassland pools and shallow drainages of the Río Paraguay basin — ranging across Paraguay, adjacent Bolivia, and the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The type species of its genus, it was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1895 from material collected at Colonia Risso in Paraguay during Alfredo Borelli's expedition to Argentina and Paraguay. Unlike the annual killifishes that share parts of its savannah range, M. punctatus is a non-annual plant-spawner whose adhesive eggs incubate in water without diapause, and wild individuals may live up to three years. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanorivulus punctatus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1895 in the report of Alfredo Borelli's collecting expedition to the Argentine republic and Paraguay: 'Viaggio del Dotter Alfredo Borelli nella Republica Argentina e nel Paraguay', published in the Bollettino dei Musei di Zoologia ed Anatomia Comparata dell'Università di Torino (vol. 10, no. 196, p. 3). The type locality is Colonia Risso, a small settlement in the Paraguayan Chaco near the Río Paraguay. Because Boulenger placed the species in a different genus, the authority is written in parentheses in the current combination.

The species was long treated within the broad genus Rivulus, which historically served as a catch-all for New World rivulines. The reclassification of this lineage into Melanorivulus was established following phylogenetic revisions of Cyprinodontiformes, and M. punctatus is treated as the type species of Melanorivulus — the nominal anchor for the entire genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Melanorivulus punctatus (Boulenger, 1895) within the family Rivulidae (sensu lato) or, under some treatments, Cynolebiidae / Aplocheilidae — the family-level boundaries in this order remain actively discussed in the literature. The taxonomy of Rivulidae and allied clades is ongoing; Melanorivulus belongs to the Aplocheiloid lineage of South American killifishes.

The specific epithet punctatus is Latin for 'spotted' or 'dotted', referring to the pattern of small dark spots or punctations on the body of both sexes — a common epithet in fish taxonomy but here straightforwardly descriptive of the live fish's appearance.

Morphology

Melanorivulus punctatus is a small, slender killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length according to hobbyist and ichthyological sources. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back on the body, the arrangement typical of rivuline killifishes. The flanks show the spotted patterning that gives the species its name: a series of small dark punctations scattered across a brownish or olive-grey background, which may be arranged in loose horizontal rows or distributed irregularly.

Sexual dichromatism is present and moderate. Males display stronger contrast in the body pattern and may show iridescent highlights — blues and greens in good light — together with pigmentation in the unpaired fins. Females are typically plainer: less vivid coloration, a more uniformly brownish or olive body, and rounder-bellied when gravid. Egg development is visible through the body wall of ripe females. Like other rivulines, the species lacks the elaborate extensions or lyrate-fin shapes found in some related genera; the fins are relatively short and rounded.

Habitat

The native range of Melanorivulus punctatus centres on the Río Paraguay drainage, encompassing Paraguay, eastern Bolivia, and the Mato Grosso region of Brazil. The type locality — Colonia Risso in Paraguay — lies in the low-lying, seasonally flooded Chaco, where broad grassland savannahs are interspersed with shallow lagoons, swampy pools, and slow-moving drainage channels that vary markedly in depth and permanence through the year.

The species occupies shallow, often heavily vegetated standing or near-standing water: swampy pools, flooded grassland pockets, and marshy depressions associated with the Chaco and Cerrado transition zones. Hobbyist sources from It Rains Fishes and academic work on Paraguayan–Amazonian rivulines characterise the habitat as including isolated pools with tea-coloured, acidic water in more forested contexts, and open grassland savannahs at other localities. The water is typically shallow, warm, and rich in organic matter — the kind of habitat that dries partially or fully in the dry season, explaining the presence of annual and near-annual killifish relatives, though M. punctatus itself does not require a dry-season diapause.

Temperature preferences are notably cool for a tropical fish: hobbyist keepers report that the species dislikes water above 75 °F and thrives in the range of 54–75 °F — a reflection of the seasonal temperature swings of the Paraguayan Chaco and Mato Grosso, where winters can be cool. This thermophily marks a significant consideration for aquarium maintenance.

Feeding

In the wild Melanorivulus punctatus feeds as a generalist micropredator in the manner typical of small rivulines: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates encountered at or near the water surface and in shallow marginal vegetation. The Chaco pool habitats where the species occurs are often rich in invertebrate life during the wet season, providing a diverse natural diet.

In the aquarium the species presents few difficulties once water temperature is kept within its cooler preferred range. It takes live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, and Artemia are all accepted — and adapts to quality dried micro-pellets or flake. Because it is a small fish, food particle size matters; large pellets or whole adult bloodworm may be ignored or difficult to consume. Varied feeding with a mix of live or frozen invertebrate foods maintains colour and condition, particularly in breeding pairs.

Mating

Melanorivulus punctatus is a non-annual killifish whose reproductive strategy centres on continuous, low-volume spawning across an extended period rather than the synchronised mass-spawning and buried diapausing eggs of annual relatives. The pair bond during spawning is transient: a male approaches a receptive female and initiates courtship with lateral displays, spreading the fins to exhibit colour and pattern. The pair then move together into fine-leaved vegetation, floating moss, or a spawning mop near the surface or substrate, where eggs are deposited individually or in small numbers.

Eggs are adhesive, roughly 0.5 in in diameter and amber-coloured, and are attached to plant material or submerged surfaces rather than buried in substrate. A single pair typically produces five to fifteen eggs per day under good conditions. Because egg deposition is spread over weeks and months rather than condensed into a single seasonal event, the species maintains a continual low-level reproductive output — a strategy well-matched to the permanent or near-permanent pool habitats it favours, where predictable water availability makes a long larval development safe.

Breeding

Breeding Melanorivulus punctatus in the aquarium is described by hobbyist sources as relatively straightforward once the key temperature requirement is respected: the species does not tolerate water above 75 °F, and breeding ceases or fails in warmer conditions. A small, well-filtered tank of 2.5 US gal or more, furnished with a floating spawning mop and a layer of dark peat or fine gravel substrate, provides appropriate conditions. Pairs or trios (one male, two females) work well.

Eggs are collected from the mop every few days and incubated in shallow water — small containers or Petri dishes — at the same cool temperature as the adults. Incubation takes approximately 14 days at 64–72 °F. Hatching produces small but active fry that begin feeding almost immediately on infusoria, paramecia, or commercially prepared fry food, progressing to Artemia nauplii after several days. Water pH during incubation reportedly influences sex ratio: a slightly lower pH tends to yield a higher proportion of females, a phenomenon documented in several rivuline species. Adults do not engage in significant egg predation compared with some killifish, though separating eggs from the adults is still routine practice. Life expectancy in the aquarium reaches up to three years.

In the aquarium

The primary challenge in keeping Melanorivulus punctatus is temperature: its preference for 54–75 °F makes it unsuitable for the warm community tanks that house the majority of tropical aquarium fish. In temperate climates the species can be maintained without heating through much of the year, or with gentle heating in a cool room; avoiding summer overheating is more often the practical concern. This cool requirement also makes it incompatible with the typical 79–82 °F regime of most South American community tanks.

Within those thermal constraints the fish is undemanding. It does well in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its Chaco origins, but is not excessively sensitive to water chemistry provided extremes are avoided. A species or near-species setup — one male with one or two females, with additional killifishes of compatible temperature requirements if desired — is the most practical arrangement, as males may spar with each other in confined space. The tank should be well planted or furnished with floating material and covered securely, since rivulines are agile jumpers.

FishBase notes the species is considered difficult to maintain in general aquarium conditions, which likely refers primarily to the temperature mismatch with standard tropical setups rather than any inherent fragility. Among killifish specialists and enthusiasts of South American rivulines it is valued as the type species of its genus and a manageable representative of the Paraguayan fauna, though it has never achieved wide popularity in the mainstream hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment completed on 14 December 2020 places Melanorivulus punctatus in the Least Concern (LC) category. The evaluation, attributed to Brejão et al. (2024, IUCN Red List), reflects the species' reasonably wide distribution across the Paraguay basin — spanning three countries and multiple drainages — and the absence of evidence for population-level decline of sufficient magnitude to qualify for a threatened category.

Nonetheless, the grassland savannahs and Chaco wetlands that form the core of this species' range face ongoing conversion pressure from agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, and water management for irrigation — the Paraguay basin has experienced substantial wetland loss over recent decades. The shallow, isolated pool habitats that M. punctatus favours are particularly vulnerable: they can be drained, filled, or heavily impacted by livestock trampling and run-off in ways that do not register as obvious habitat loss at a landscape scale. The species' disjunct distribution across isolated pools also limits dispersal between populations, meaning local extinctions may not be readily recolonised. Continued monitoring of Paraguay basin rivuline populations remains valuable even where the aggregate assessment is currently reassuring.
