Taxonomy & naming
Melanorivulus rutilicaudus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004 as part of a revision that established the genus Melanorivulus to accommodate a suite of small Brazilian rivulines previously assigned to Rivulus. The original description appeared in Ichthyological Research 51(4): 313–322, where Costa erected Melanorivulus and described three new species, including M. rutilicaudus, on the basis of shared derived characters distinguishing them from other rivuline genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the valid name as Melanorivulus rutilicaudus (Costa, 2004), placed in the family Rivulidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The authority is given in parentheses because the combination was originally proposed under Melanorivulus, which some later workers — including Huber (2012) — treated as a subgenus of Rivulus rather than an independent genus; under the prevailing Catalog of Fishes treatment, Melanorivulus is retained as valid.
The genus Melanorivulus encompasses several dozen species distributed across the central Brazilian plateau, the Atlantic Forest drainage, and adjacent river systems, united by the non-annual life strategy and a suite of osteological and pigmentation characters. M. rutilicaudus belongs to a complex of Atlantic Forest representatives whose exact species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships continue to be refined as additional material is examined.
Morphology
M. rutilicaudus is a slender, moderately compressed rivuline with the slightly upturned mouth and large eyes characteristic of surface-associated members of the family. FishBase records a maximum standard length in the range of 1–1.5 in, consistent with the diminutive proportions typical of Melanorivulus. The body tapers to a rounded caudal fin, and the scales are cycloid and moderate in size.
The defining feature of the species, and the source of its name, is the intense red coloration displayed by males in the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins — a vivid pigmentation unusual in its genus and striking in healthy, well-conditioned individuals. Body coloration in males is a warm brownish to olive-tan on the dorsum, with flanks showing iridescent lateral reflections under directional light. Females are markedly plainer, exhibiting reduced fin coloration and a more uniform brownish body, as is typical of sexual dimorphism in rivulines. Juveniles of both sexes resemble females until males begin to develop breeding coloration at maturity.
Habitat
The type locality of M. rutilicaudus falls within the coastal Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil — likely in the drainages of São Paulo or Paraná state based on the sympatry documented for closely related Atlantic Forest Melanorivulus by Costa (2004). The species inhabits permanent or near-permanent slow-flowing streams, marginal pools, and backwaters associated with intact or partially intact Atlantic Forest cover.
Water chemistry at Atlantic Forest rivuline collection sites is typically soft and mildly to moderately acidic: a temperature range of 68–75 °F and pH values of approximately 5.5–6.5 are consistent with conditions described for the coastal forest stream fauna of this region. Substrates are typically sand or fine clay overlaid with leaf litter, and marginal vegetation — aquatic mosses, roots, and fine-leaved plants — provides both cover and spawning substrate. The species is benthopelagic, occupying the water column among plant stems and root tangles at shallow depths rather than open water.
The Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) is one of the most critically threatened biomes on Earth: less than 12–15% of original cover remains, concentrated in fragmented remnants. Forest-stream killies in this region are often highly localised and vulnerable to the loss of riparian shade, altered hydrology, and water quality degradation that follow deforestation.
Feeding
As with other small rivulines, M. rutilicaudus is a micro-predator in the wild, foraging on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton, and surface-drifting terrestrial arthropods — encountered among marginal vegetation and at the water surface. The upturned mouth is adapted to taking prey at or just below the surface film, and the fish is an active, opportunistic feeder throughout the day.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of appropriately sized live and frozen foods without difficulty. Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, and small frozen bloodworm are reliable staples. Small-diameter dried micropellets are accepted by acclimated individuals. Feeding multiple small meals per day, rather than single large portions, maintains condition and sustains continuous spawning activity in healthy pairs — a rhythm that suits the plant-spawner reproductive strategy.
Mating
M. rutilicaudus is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent watercourses and reproduces as a plant spawner rather than burying eggs in seasonal peat. Pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, or the fibres of artificial spawning mops over an extended period — a continuous, low-volume strategy contrasting sharply with the explosive seasonal spawning of annual killies.
Males court females with lateral fin displays that show off the characteristic red caudal and dorsal coloration — the very pigmentation that gives the species its name. The spawning embrace is brief: the male aligns alongside the female as she extrudes an egg, which is fertilised immediately and adheres to adjacent plant material. There is no bubble-nest construction, no parental defence of the spawn site, and no mouthbrooding. Spawning occurs regularly throughout the adult reproductive period under stable aquarium conditions, yielding a steady supply of eggs suited to small-scale hobbyist rearing.
Breeding
In the wild, reproduction in M. rutilicaudus is likely year-round or extended through much of the year, as is typical of Atlantic Forest rivulines inhabiting stable permanent streams without extreme seasonal fluctuation. Eggs are deposited singly or in small batches among plant material and incubate in water without any diapause requirement — a key distinction from annual killies whose eggs must undergo a dry period in peat before development completes.
Under aquarium conditions, pairs housed in a dedicated breeding tank with a spawning mop of fine synthetic wool or a clump of Java moss will deposit eggs daily when in good condition. Eggs should be collected every few days by removing the mop and replacing it with a fresh one; eggs are rinsed and incubated separately in shallow water with a small amount of methylene blue at 72–75 °F. Hatching occurs in approximately 10–14 days. Fry are small at hatching but free-swimming promptly, and accept infusoria or commercial fry powder initially before graduating to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii within their first week. Adults are long-lived by killifish standards — three to four years in good conditions — and will spawn continuously over that period. Water temperature should be kept in the 68–75 °F range to maintain health and avoid shortening lifespan.
In the aquarium
M. rutilicaudus is a hardy and undemanding killifish well suited to small, dedicated species tanks or carefully selected community set-ups with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. A tank of 10 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or small group; the species does not require large volumes and benefits more from cover and plant density than from open swimming space. Floating plants, fine-leaved stem plants, and spawning mops of synthetic wool are the most useful furnishings.
Water chemistry should reflect the soft, mildly acidic conditions of the species' Atlantic Forest home: temperature 68–75 °F, pH 5.5–6.5, soft to moderately soft hardness. The fish tolerates a wider range than this in practice — an adaptability typical of Melanorivulus — but breeding performance and coloration are best within the natural parameters. Gentle filtration through a sponge filter maintains water quality without producing damaging currents. Males are generally not aggressive toward females or conspecifics at the scale of a small dedicated aquarium, though a backup female is useful if aggression develops in a single pair.
In the specialist killifish hobby, M. rutilicaudus is valued both for the male's vivid red fin coloration and for the straightforward, continuous-spawning reproductive mode that makes it accessible to hobbyists without specialist annual-killi peat-spawning equipment. The American Killifish Association and allied organisations are the main channels through which the species circulates in the hobby, typically via member egg and fish lists.
Conservation
Melanorivulus rutilicaudus has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE) as of June 2026. This absence of assessment does not reflect security: the Atlantic Forest streams of southeastern Brazil, where the species is endemic, sit within one of the most heavily degraded biomes on the planet. Original Atlantic Forest cover has been reduced to roughly 12–15% of its pre-Columbian extent, with what remains concentrated in fragmented patches separated by agricultural land, urban expansion, and plantation forestry.
Forest-stream killies like M. rutilicaudus are particularly sensitive to riparian degradation. The loss of canopy shade raises water temperature and alters the leaf-litter input that supports the invertebrate communities on which the fish feeds; increased turbidity from exposed soil clogs the fine substrate habitats in which the species spawns; and altered hydrology can convert permanent streams to intermittent ones — lethal for a non-annual species with no diapausing egg bank. As a microendemic restricted to a limited drainage within an already-depleted biome, M. rutilicaudus faces the same trajectory as many Atlantic Forest endemics that have declined or disappeared before being formally studied. Formal assessment and inclusion in captive-maintenance programmes through the killifish hobbyist community represent meaningful contributions to the species' long-term persistence.
