Melanorivulus ubirajarai is a minute, non-annual killifish endemic to a single tributary of the Babilônia River in the upper Araguaia River basin, Goiás state, central Brazil — a stream that rises among the cerrado-cloaked Caiapós hills and supports fan-palm gallery forest unlike anything else in the surrounding savanna landscape. Described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2012, it reaches barely 1 in standard length and is distinguished from its close relatives by a unique caudal-fin colour pattern shared only with the similarly rare Melanorivulus litteratus. Its single known locality and its area of occupancy of under 12 mi², combined with the encirclement of that locality by agriculture and livestock farming, placed it on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable in 2018, making it one of many rivuline killifishes whose fate rests on the survival of a single forest fragment.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanorivulus ubirajarai was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2012 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 23, number 3, pages 211–218), from specimens collected in a stream tributary to the Babilônia River in the upper Araguaia River basin, Caiapós hill region, Goiás state, central Brazil. The original description also provides the meristics: dorsal-fin rays 9–10, anal-fin rays 14–16, and lateral-line scale count 33–35. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, and the parentheses around the authority indicate that the species was not originally placed in Melanorivulus under that name — Costa described it as Rivulus ubirajarai; the genus Melanorivulus was erected subsequently to accommodate a large clade of South American rivulines formerly housed in the paraphyletic Rivulus.

Within Melanorivulus, Costa noted that M. ubirajarai shares a distinctive caudal-fin colour pattern — specifically, females carry a short grey stripe between the caudal-peduncle spot and the caudal bar — only with Melanorivulus litteratus, a species from a neighbouring drainage in the same region. The two are therefore interpreted as sister species, and the Killifische.info database similarly records M. kunzei as a close relative occurring in the same upper Araguaia drainage system. This cluster of related species reflects the high rate of rivuline speciation across central Brazil's cerrado streams, where individual hill ranges and gallery forests can harbour their own endemic killifish lineages.

Morphology

Melanorivulus ubirajarai is a small fish: FishBase gives a maximum standard length of 1 in for males and 1 in for females, consistent with the largest specimen recorded in the original description at 1 in SL. Like most members of the genus, it has the streamlined, somewhat laterally compressed body typical of forest-stream rivulines, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for taking prey at or near the water surface.

The diagnostic external character is the caudal-fin pattern. In females, a short grey stripe connects the caudal-peduncle spot to the caudal bar — a feature not recorded in any other described Melanorivulus species except the sympatrically distributed M. litteratus. Males presumably show the typical sexual dichromatism of the genus, with more vivid flank patterning and fin coloration, though the original description focuses primarily on female diagnostic characters. The dorsal-fin ray count of 9–10 and anal-fin ray count of 14–16, combined with 33–35 lateral-line scales, place the species firmly within the range of variation seen across the Melanorivulus clade.

Habitat

The type locality and only known site for Melanorivulus ubirajarai is a small stream tributary to the Babilônia River in the Caiapós hill area of central Brazil, within the upper Araguaia River basin. The IUCN assessment describes the surrounding habitat as buritizais — formations dominated by the buriti fan palm (Mauritia flexuosa) — which are characteristic of gallery forests and permanently wet lowland areas within the otherwise seasonally dry cerrado biome. These palm-dominated wetland corridors create permanently moist, shaded stream environments within a landscape that is otherwise subject to pronounced wet and dry seasons.

The stream itself is a permanent freshwater habitat, confirming that M. ubirajarai is a non-annual species reliant on year-round water. The IUCN calculates the area of occupancy at under 12 mi², reflecting the extreme localization of this buriti gallery-forest habitat within a broader agricultural matrix. Water chemistry specifics for the type locality are not recorded in published sources, but cerrado gallery-forest streams in Goiás state typically run clear to lightly stained, moderately soft, and slightly acid to near-neutral — conditions shaped more by the sandy, leached cerrado soils than by the blackwater chemistry of Amazonian forest streams.

Feeding

No published dietary studies are available specifically for Melanorivulus ubirajarai. Like other small rivuline killifishes in permanent forest streams, it almost certainly feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates available at or near the water surface — aquatic insect larvae, fallen terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth position shared across the rivuline clade is an adaptation for surface feeding, and gallery-forest streams in central Brazil deliver a continuous supply of terrestrial invertebrate input from the overhanging palm and riparian vegetation.

In the aquarium, closely related Melanorivulus species accept a wide range of small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, chironomid larvae, and finely minced meaty foods — and will also learn to take small floating pellets. Given the small adult size (under 1 in SL), prey items must be appropriately scaled; micro-worms and baby Artemia are suitable for conditioning.

Mating

Melanorivulus ubirajarai is a non-annual killifish living in permanent water, and its reproductive mode follows the plant-spawning pattern characteristic of non-annual rivulines: pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, moss, or spawning mops over an extended period rather than making a single explosive mass-spawning event. This mode contrasts sharply with the annual killifishes of seasonally desiccating pools, which bury drought-resistant diapausing eggs in substrate and die at the onset of dry season.

No captive breeding records for this species are documented in published or hobbyist literature. The American Killifish Association records the species but does not list breeding accounts, and the It Rains Fishes species page notes that no breeding data in captivity exist, suggesting it has not been kept or bred widely. Based on the biology of the genus, males can be expected to court females actively, displaying lateral postures that show off their flank patterning and fin coloration before aligning alongside the female to deposit eggs among plants or mop fibres.

Breeding

In non-annual rivulines generally, eggs are deposited a few at a time over days or weeks and incubate submerged in water without diapause. Hatching typically occurs within two to three weeks depending on temperature, and fry are comparatively large relative to egg-laying annuals, able to take small live foods such as Artemia nauplii or micro-worms almost immediately. Parental care is absent — the parents ignore or may eat eggs if not removed — so breeders typically either remove the spawning mop with eggs for separate incubation or transfer the adults to a fresh vessel after a spawning period.

For a species of this size (under 1 in SL), spawning vessels can be modest — a small tank with a clump of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or synthetic mops) and a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping is sufficient. The extremely restricted wild distribution of M. ubirajarai makes any captive population theoretically significant for the species' long-term security, though no coordinated captive-management programme is currently documented for it. Aquarists who do obtain specimens are encouraged to maintain detailed records and share breeding experiences through the American Killifish Association or comparable societies.

In the aquarium

Melanorivulus ubirajarai is rarely encountered in the hobby and no detailed husbandry accounts have been published. As a small, non-annual Melanorivulus from a permanent cerrado gallery-forest stream, general care principles for the genus apply: a small, covered aquarium is essential — rivulines are notoriously capable jumpers and an unsecured tank lid will result in the fish escaping within days. A tank of 10–15 US gal is ample for a small group.

Water conditions should reflect the soft, slightly acid to near-neutral chemistry of central Brazilian cerrado streams: a temperature of approximately 72–79 °F, pH in the range 6.0–7.0, and low to moderate hardness would be appropriate starting parameters. Dense planting and subdued lighting replicate the shaded gallery-forest stream environment and encourage natural behaviour. The species should not be mixed with larger fish, and males of rivuline killifishes can be intolerant of one another, so a single male with one or two females is often the most harmonious arrangement in a small tank. Small live or frozen foods form the best diet; supplementation with floating micro-pellets is possible once the fish are settled.

Given the species' extreme range restriction and Vulnerable status, any specimens available in the trade should be treated as a conservation responsibility. Killfish enthusiasts are well positioned to maintain and propagate such species, and the network of organisations such as the American Killifish Association can connect keepers with others working with the species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Melanorivulus ubirajarai as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 on 7 November 2018, with that assessment published in 2022. Criterion D2 is applied when a species' area of occupancy is under 12 mi² and the species is therefore vulnerable to rapid deterioration through the effects of future activities or stochastic events — it is the criterion reserved for highly localised species whose restricted range creates an inherently high extinction risk even in the absence of currently observed decline. The species' entire known range fits within a single stream tributary to the Babilônia River on the Caiapós hills of Goiás state, central Brazil.

The IUCN notes that the single known locality is surrounded by agriculture and livestock farming, which represent potential future threats. Cerrado gallery forests — the buritizais and other riparian formations that provide the species' habitat — are among the most threatened vegetation types in Brazil, subject to clearance for soy cultivation, cattle pasture, and eucalyptus plantations throughout Goiás state. Stream sedimentation, altered hydrology from pasture runoff, and potential water abstraction for irrigation all threaten the permanent-water stream character that M. ubirajarai depends on as a non-annual species. Unlike annual killies that can recolonise from buried eggs after a disturbance, a non-annual rivuline living in a single stream cannot recover from total habitat loss.

The population trend is listed as unknown, and the species has not been recorded from any additional localities since its 2012 description. Its sister species M. litteratus faces comparable threats as an equally localised endemic of the same region. Both species would benefit from formal protection of their respective type localities within the broader framework of cerrado conservation, though no specific protected area is documented to cover the Babilônia River tributary at present.
