Taxonomy & naming
Pachypanchax arnoulti was first described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1964, placing it within the broadly circumscribed panchax assemblage then grouped under Aplocheilidae. The species was comprehensively redescribed by Paul Loiselle in 2006 in a landmark taxonomic review of all Malagasy Pachypanchax published in Zootaxa (vol. 1366, pp. 1–44), which also erected four new species and stabilised the genus limits. Loiselle's redescription is now the principal reference for the species, though the original authority remains Daget and the combination Pachypanchax arnoulti (Daget, 1964) is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Pachypanchax is placed in the family Aplocheilidae and is the only killifish genus native to Madagascar and the granitic Seychelles, representing a Gondwana relict lineage that predates the separation of Madagascar from Africa. The genus is characterised by a dorsolaterally flattened head, an upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, and a relatively robust body compared to the slender continental Aplocheilus species with which it was once lumped. Pachypanchax arnoulti belongs to a species group restricted to the western drainages of Madagascar, distinguished from its Malagasy congeners by coloration and meristic characters documented in Loiselle's revision.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum size of 2.5 in SL for Pachypanchax arnoulti, while Seriously Fish gives a somewhat broader working range of 2.5–3 in total length for aquarium-maintained individuals, suggesting the FishBase figure may represent a smaller wild specimen. The body plan is typical of surface-oriented killifish: moderately elongate and slightly compressed laterally, with a dorsoventrally flattened head, a large upturned mouth placed at the tip of the snout, and dorsal and anal fins set well back on the body and opposed to one another — an arrangement that maximises stability at the water surface.
Colouration in males is vivid: the flanks carry iridescent blue-green scales, the fins show red-orange pigmentation that intensifies during courtship, and the caudal fin typically displays a combination of yellow, orange, and black banding or spotting. Females are plainer, with a brownish to olive ground colour and less developed fin colouration, and are identifiable by the rounder belly. Juveniles are cryptically coloured, gaining adult pigmentation as they mature. The sexual dichromatism is strongly expressed and makes sexing straightforward from an early age.
Habitat
Pachypanchax arnoulti is endemic to the western drainage systems of Madagascar, principally the Mahavavy du Sud and the Betsiboka–Ikopa river systems, from their upper catchments to the first-order stream tributaries that drain into the Mozambique Channel and into Lake Kinkony and its satellite lakes. Type-locality conditions recorded by Seriously Fish capture the range's cooler, more acidic extreme: clear, tannin-stained, soft water with a total hardness below 17 ppm, pH around 6.2, conductivity of only 16 µS/cm, and a temperature of approximately 68 °F — a profile consistent with a shaded forest stream drawing from lateritic soils beneath intact canopy.
Elsewhere in the range, particularly in more open swamp and lake-margin habitats, conditions shift toward neutral pH and moderate hardness; FishBase records site values of pH 7, 73 °F, and 5 dGH from such localities. The species therefore spans a meaningful gradient from soft, acidic forest-stream water to moderately hard, near-neutral lacustrine shallows — a plasticity unusual among killies but consistent with the environmental heterogeneity of western Madagascar's seasonal hydrology, where water chemistry can shift substantially between the wet season (October–April) and the extended dry season.
Feeding
In the wild, Pachypanchax arnoulti feeds primarily on terrestrial and aquatic insects, taking advantage of the surface-oriented body plan and upturned mouth to intercept invertebrates that fall onto or emerge at the water surface. Swamp and stream-edge habitats in western Madagascar support abundant insect life during the wet season, and the species is well placed to exploit this resource. Aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, and surface-drifting debris likely supplement the insect diet.
In the aquarium the species is straightforwardly fed and accepts dried foods, including quality floating pellets and flakes, alongside live and frozen alternatives. Daphnia, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and similar invertebrate foods are all taken with enthusiasm and are useful for conditioning breeders. Because the fish is surface-oriented, sinking foods may be ignored; floating or slow-sinking offerings suited to the upturned gape produce the best feeding response.
Mating
Pachypanchax arnoulti is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner: pairs or small groups court and deposit eggs continuously over days and weeks onto fine-leaved aquatic plants, aquatic mosses, or synthetic spawning mops placed near the water surface or trailing across the substrate. There is no diapause, no soil-burying behaviour, and no dependence on seasonal desiccation to trigger breeding — the fish are reproductively active year-round under stable aquarium conditions.
Courtship involves intense male display: the male curves his body alongside the female, fans his coloured fins to full extension, and engages in repeated side-by-side shimmering runs to position the pair above the chosen spawning site. Spawning is fractional — one or a small cluster of eggs is deposited per embrace rather than a single mass clutch — which means eggs are produced continuously at low daily rates rather than in discrete seasonal pulses. This mode suits the permanent-water habitats the species occupies in the wild, where there is no ecological pressure to concentrate reproduction into a brief wet-season window.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive and cling to plant leaves, moss fronds, or mop fibres where they incubate in water at ambient temperature. At typical aquarium temperatures in the range of 72–77 °F, incubation lasts approximately two to three weeks; there is no requirement for a drying period or peat storage. The eggs are relatively large for a killifish and visible among the plant material. Because the adults are capable of eating eggs and fry, Seriously Fish recommends either regular collection of eggs for separate incubation in shallow water with a small amount of antifungal treatment, or a heavily decorated group setup in which the dense planting provides enough refuge for fry to survive alongside the adults.
Fry hatch at a reasonable size and can take newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worm from the start, graduating to larger live and frozen foods quickly. Growth is moderately fast under good feeding regimes. The species is long-lived relative to annual killies — individuals may survive several years in aquarium conditions — and breeders remain productive for an extended period once established. A well-matched group of one or two males with several females is the recommended colony structure, as single-male dominance over a lone female can lead to persistent harassment.
In the aquarium
Pachypanchax arnoulti is considered an intermediate-level killifish, accessible to hobbyists with some experience but not demanding the specialised annual-killi protocols of peat-spawning species. A covered aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in length provides adequate space for a small group; the tight-fitting lid is essential, as all surface-oriented killies are accomplished jumpers. Décor should replicate the species' natural habitats: fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Ceratophyllum, and water sprite provide both spawning sites and visual refuge for subordinate fish, and floating plants or surface cover reduce startle responses.
Water parameters should fall within the range the species encounters in nature: Seriously Fish recommends pH around 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water, with temperature held between 18 and 75 °F — the cooler end suits the type-locality profile and appears to favour both health and breeding activity. The fish is peaceful with species of similar size and is commonly maintained in killifish community setups or with other small, non-aggressive fish that share its water-chemistry preferences. Tankmates large enough to avoid predation and that occupy mid-water or bottom zones work well alongside this surface-oriented species.
Pachypanchax arnoulti is not common in the hobby and is primarily maintained by killifish specialists and Malagasy fish enthusiasts. Conservation-minded keepers who obtain captive-bred stock from reputable sources contribute to maintaining a buffer population against the continued decline of wild populations.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pachypanchax arnoulti as Vulnerable (VU, criterion B1ab(iii)) in June 2016. The assessment reflects both restricted range and ongoing habitat decline across western Madagascar's river basins. Paul Loiselle's review (Zootaxa, 2006) noted that populations formerly collected abundantly near Maevatanana in the Betsiboka–Ikopa drainage are now absent from their previous localities — a local extirpation tied directly to deforestation, agricultural conversion, and the consequent siltation and altered hydrology of the small streams and swamps the species depends on.
Western Madagascar's river systems have experienced severe deforestation over recent decades, with the laterite soils exposed by land clearing leading to catastrophic erosion, heavy sedimentation of streams, and the browning and shallowing of formerly clear-water habitats. Lake Kinkony and its satellite lakes, which form part of the species' range, face additional pressure from agricultural runoff, seasonal drawdown for irrigation, and the introduction of exotic fishes including mosquitofish (Gambusia) and tilapia. These introductions are implicated in killifish declines across Madagascar and the Indian Ocean island region more broadly.
The species is maintained in captivity by a small number of European and North American killifish specialists, and the existence of an aquarium population provides some insurance against further range contraction in the wild. The IUCN Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands Red List summary (2018) lists the species among freshwater fishes of conservation concern in the region. Sustained monitoring of the Mahavavy du Sud and Betsiboka populations and formal protection of key catchment habitats are the conservation priorities indicated by the available data.
