Taxonomy & naming
Adontosternarchus clarkae was described by Mago-Leccia, Lundberg and Baskin in 1985 and placed in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like its relatives it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the Gymnotiformes are set apart from ordinary aquarium fish by an electric organ and by a single long anal fin that does almost all of the swimming work, in place of a proper tail fin. Apteronotidae, the family this species belongs to, is distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, which gives its members the fastest, most refined wave-type electric discharges of any knifefish group.
The genus Adontosternarchus is one of several toothless, deep-channel Apteronotidae genera scattered through Amazonian and Orinocan drainages, most known from relatively few collected specimens. The species epithet honours Kate Rodriguez-Clark, who ran a field research station in Venezuela and collected the holotype. As with the rest of the order, these fish are not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Adontosternarchus clarkae is a compressed, blade-bodied fish reaching a maximum of about 8 in in total length, considerably smaller than showpiece relatives like the black ghost. As in other ghost knifefishes it lacks a dorsal fin and a conventional tail fin; forward and backward movement comes from undulations of a long anal fin running along most of the underside of the body. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that leaves these fish more exposed to water-quality stress and to certain medications than scaled fish.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of sensory pores across the skin that read the field it generates. FishBase notes the species is sold in the small size range typical of newly collected wild fish (roughly 3–4 in) well before reaching its adult maximum. External sexual differences are not documented for this species; data are sparse.
Habitat
This species is recorded from the Amazon and Orinoco basins of Venezuela and Brazil, with its type locality at Raudal de Mavahate on the Río Negro near San Carlos de Río Negro in Venezuela's Amazonas Territory — classic black-water Amazonia. It lives in quiet to moderately flowing water in the side arms of larger rivers, among submerged roots, fallen trees and dense marginal plant growth, over sandy to fine sedimentary bottoms.
These are warm, soft, acidic waters, optimally around 26–28 degrees Celsius, and typically dim or stained by dissolved tannins — exactly the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense pays off. Peak activity is reported around dawn, after which the fish likely retreats into cover for the rest of the day, in keeping with the largely nocturnal-to-crepuscular habits of the family.
Feeding
Adontosternarchus clarkae is a benthic-foraging carnivore. In the aquarium trade literature it is reported taking Tubifex worms and frozen foods, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates picked from sediment and cover in the wild. As in other Apteronotidae, prey is most likely located largely by electrolocation — sensing the weak electrical signatures of small animals hidden in the substrate or among roots — rather than by sight, in the dim, tannin-stained water it inhabits.
Aquarium accounts describe peak activity around dawn, when feeding is likely concentrated; data on its wild diet in more detail are sparse.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented specifically for Adontosternarchus clarkae. Across Apteronotidae generally, the wave-type electric organ discharge functions as a social signal as well as a sensing tool, encoding a fish's identity, sex and likely reproductive state; in the best-studied relative, the brown ghost knifefish, males and females are known to shift discharge frequency during encounters in an electric exchange, and this kind of electrical signalling is thought to underlie courtship across the family more broadly.
Whether A. clarkae forms pairs, defends territory, or simply meets and spawns opportunistically among cover is not recorded in the available literature. Data are sparse, and nothing should be inferred beyond what is documented for the family as a whole.
Breeding
Adontosternarchus clarkae is presumed to be an egg-layer, as are all Apteronotidae, but no detailed breeding account exists for this species and it is not known to have been bred in captivity. It is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, so what little is known about reproduction in ghost knifefishes generally — scattered adhesive eggs laid among roots or fine cover, with no substantial parental care afterwards — is inference from better-studied relatives such as the black ghost and brown ghost, not observation of this species itself.
Given how rarely this fish is even seen outside museum collections and targeted surveys, breeding data should be treated as effectively undocumented rather than guessed at.
In the aquarium
Adontosternarchus clarkae is described by the small number of specialist importers who have handled it as a peaceful, undemanding fish once its basic needs are met, but it is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade and should be considered a species for the dedicated Gymnotiformes keeper rather than a realistic option for most aquarists. Where it has been kept, it has done well in warm (26–28 degrees Celsius), soft, acidic water with subdued lighting and secure hiding places such as wood, roots or tubes, mirroring its natural side-arm habitat; peak activity around dawn suggests a fish best watched at low light rather than through the day.
As with all Apteronotidae, its scaleless skin makes it sensitive to poor water quality and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or used at reduced doses. It should not be housed with fish small enough to be mistaken for prey, and given how little is documented about its temperament with tankmates, a species or specialist-community setup with similarly sized fish is the more cautious choice.
Conservation
Adontosternarchus clarkae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a range that spans large sections of the Amazon and Orinoco basins across Venezuela and Brazil rather than a single vulnerable river system. It faces no documented species-specific threat, and its near-absence from the aquarium trade means collection pressure is not a meaningful factor for this species.
As with many black-water Amazonian and Orinocan fish, the broader pressures on its habitat are deforestation, mining-related pollution and other land-use change across the basin, though no assessment ties population trends in this particular species to those pressures. It remains, in effect, a data-sparse fish known mainly from a handful of collection records and taxonomic descriptions.
