Akawaio penak is a thin, eel-like electric knifefish known only from the upper Mazaruni River in the Guiana Shield of Guyana, and the sole member of its genus. Like almost all Gymnotiformes it produces a weak electric organ discharge — here a pulse-type signal — that forms a private field around the body, letting it electrolocate prey and obstacles and communicate with other knifefish in the murky, tannin-stained shallows it inhabits. Described in 2013 from DNA and morphological work that showed it did not belong in any existing genus, it is a scientifically important but essentially unknown fish to aquarists, restricted to a single isolated river system and already under pressure from gold-mining in its watershed.

Taxonomy & naming

Akawaio penak was described in 2013 by Maldonado-Ocampo, López-Fernández, Taphorn, Bernard, Crampton and Lovejoy (published in Zoologica Scripta), based on specimens from the upper Mazaruni River in Guyana. DNA sequencing and evolutionary analysis showed the fish was distinct enough from existing genera to warrant a new one, and Akawaio penak was erected as both a new genus and a new species — it remains the only known member of the genus. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes.

The genus name honors the Akawaio people indigenous to the upper Mazaruni region where the fish was collected. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species in the order generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication, a trait entirely unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues in a different order altogether and share nothing with Akawaio beyond a blade-like silhouette. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Akawaio penak has the classic bluntnose-knifefish build: a thin, elongated, eel-like body, scaleless skin, and no dorsal or tail fin, with propulsion supplied by a long anal fin run as a travelling wave beneath the body. FishBase records a maximum total length around 8.5 in and an anal fin with a very high ray count (roughly 173–199 rays), typical of the family's undulating swimming mode. It lacks the postpectoral and humeral accessory electric organs seen in some relatives, a detail used to help distinguish the genus.

Running along the body is the electric organ that generates the fish's pulse-type discharge, paired with electroreceptive pores across the skin that read the field it creates. As in other Hypopomidae, the electric sense substitutes for vision in the dark or turbid water the fish inhabits — genuinely useful, since eyes do little in murky shallows. Data on sexual differences in body shape or fin structure have not been documented for this species.

Habitat

The species is known only from the upper Mazaruni River in Guyana, part of the Guiana Shield — an ancient upland block whose isolation from surrounding river systems is thought to exceed 30 million years, which has allowed distinct, endemic fish lineages like this one to evolve in place. It lives in shallow, murky water, consistent with the nocturnal, cover-seeking habits typical of Hypopomidae.

As with its relatives, that murkiness is functionally important rather than incidental: in water where sight is of limited use, the weak electric field the fish generates becomes the primary way it senses its surroundings, detects prey and obstacles, and recognizes other knifefish. No aquarium husbandry data exists for Akawaio penak — it is not established in the hobby — so habitat detail here reflects only what has been documented in the wild.

Feeding

No diet-specific research has been published for Akawaio penak. By family, Hypopomidae are nocturnal, cryptic predators of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and similar prey — hunted in leaf litter and sediment using electrolocation rather than sight, in keeping with the pulse-type electric sense the sci.news and University of Toronto accounts describe for this species.

Given the total absence of aquarium or field feeding observations for this species specifically, this account does not go further than what the family's general biology supports. Data sparse.

Mating

Courtship and mating in Akawaio penak have not been documented. In Hypopomidae generally, pulse-type electric organ discharges carry a species- and sex-specific signature, and electric signalling is understood to feature in how individuals identify potential mates and rivals in the dark; this is inferred from the wider family and order rather than from direct observation of A. penak.

No courtship behavior, seasonality, or approach sequence has been recorded for this species. Data sparse.

Breeding

Breeding biology in Akawaio penak is undocumented. Where reproduction has been studied at all in Hypopomidae, it typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sand, generally timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward — but no such observations exist for this species itself.

As a single-river endemic described only in 2013 and never reported in aquarium culture, there is no record of captive or wild spawning to describe. Data sparse; prefer no claim over invented detail.

In the aquarium

Akawaio penak is not known to be present in the aquarium trade — it has no history of import, captive husbandry, or hobbyist keeping on record. Any care guidance here is necessarily general, drawn from its family rather than from direct experience with the species.

Were it ever to appear in the trade, the general expectations for small Hypopomidae would apply: a dim, quiet aquarium with soft, sediment or leaf-litter substrate for a nocturnal, cover-seeking fish; scaleless skin that demands great care with medications (no copper-based treatments, reduced doses generally) and low tolerance for ammonia and nitrate; and tankmates chosen with the fish's small size and delicate build in mind. None of this is tested for A. penak specifically, and a fish endemic to a single, ecologically distinct river system is a poor candidate for casual collection or keeping in any case.

Conservation

Akawaio penak is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessment by K. Torgersen, 2023), a status driven by its extremely restricted range: it is known only from the upper Mazaruni River basin in Guyana, a single isolated river system, and is the sole species in its genus. Range-restricted endemism of this kind is the classic driver of elevated extinction risk in Gymnotiformes, most of which are otherwise data deficient or of least concern.

The upper Mazaruni watershed faces pressure from gold-mining activity, which degrades habitat through sediment disturbance and pollution — a direct threat to a fish that depends on clear-enough, structurally intact shallow water and an intact electrosensory environment. With no aquarium trade and no wider range to fall back on, the species' prospects rest entirely on the condition of this one river system.
