Taxonomy & naming
Eigenmannia oradens was described in 2018 by Dutra, Peixoto, de Santana and Wosiacki in the journal Zootaxa, based on material from the Río Ventuari, a tributary of the Orinoco in Amazonas state, Venezuela. It belongs to the family Sternopygidae, the glass and rattail knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ that produces a weak field around the body, used for electrolocation in the dark and for communication with other knifefish, and by a single long anal fin that does almost all the swimming, with no proper dorsal or tail fin.
The species epithet oradens combines the Latin ora (edge) and dens (tooth), referring to a distinctive bony, tooth-bearing flange along the edge of the dentary bone that separates it from its congeners. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. As with many recently described gymnotiforms, E. oradens is not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) despite the shared common name — those are bonytongues from an entirely different lineage.
Morphology
The original description places the holotype at roughly 4 in measured to the end of the anal fin, a modest size consistent with a slender, elongate glass knifefish body plan; like its relatives it is compressed side to side and tapers to a fine, whip-like tail, with no dorsal or caudal fin worth the name. Diagnostic features noted by Dutra and colleagues include a bony dorsolateral flange on the dentary bearing attached teeth, a subterminal mouth, 99–107 scales along the lateral line to the end of the anal fin, and a pectoral fin ray count of ii,16–17 — the kind of fine anatomical detail that separates one Eigenmannia species from another to a taxonomist, though it means little at a glance in the aquarium.
As in the rest of the genus, the body is thin-skinned, semi-transparent and scaleless, and running along it is the electric organ whose continuous, wave-type discharge gives glass knifefish their name in the neuroscience literature as much as the hobby. Detailed measurements of adult size, growth and any external difference between the sexes have not been published for this species; the closely related and much better studied Eigenmannia virescens shows a size-based sexual dimorphism, with males growing considerably larger than females, and a similar pattern is plausible here but unconfirmed.
Habitat
Eigenmannia oradens is known from the Río Ventuari, a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco in Venezuela's Amazonas state — part of the wider Orinoco basin of northern South America. As a single-river endemic described only recently, its full range within the basin has not been mapped in detail, and nothing has been published specifically on the microhabitat it favours within the Ventuari.
Glass knifefish in general are creatures of slow-flowing tributaries, backwaters and still margins with submerged roots, leaf litter and other cover, in warm, often tannin-stained Neotropical fresh water where visibility is poor and an electric sense does real work. It is reasonable to expect E. oradens to occupy similar water to its relatives, but that should be read as an inference from the genus rather than a documented fact about this species.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Eigenmannia oradens specifically. Glass knifefish as a group are nocturnal micro-predators, foraging after dark for small aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, locating prey largely by electrolocation rather than sight in the dim, often turbid water they inhabit.
In the absence of species-specific data, the safest statement is that E. oradens almost certainly follows the same pattern as its congeners — a small-prey nocturnal hunter working close to cover and sediment — rather than anything more specific about preferred prey items or feeding times.
Mating
Courtship in Eigenmannia is bound up with the wave-type electric organ discharge that gives the genus its name in electrophysiology. In Eigenmannia virescens, the best-studied member of the genus and the classic subject for the jamming-avoidance response — the mechanism by which two nearby fish shift their discharge frequencies apart so their electric fields do not interfere — the discharge itself carries information about sex and identity, and courtship plays out partly as an exchange of these continuous electric signals in the dark alongside physical approach.
Nothing specific has been published on courtship behaviour in Eigenmannia oradens itself, and this account should be read as an extrapolation from the genus rather than direct observation of this species.
Breeding
No breeding record for Eigenmannia oradens in the aquarium or in the wild has been located; the species is too recently described and too little kept for that. Within the genus, however, Eigenmannia species — and E. virescens in particular — are egg-layers that scatter adhesive eggs among aquatic plant roots or floating vegetation, typically as fractional spawners producing eggs in batches rather than a single clutch, with little to no parental care afterwards.
Eigenmannia as a genus is reported to breed in captivity more readily than most gymnotiforms, which raises the possibility that E. oradens could follow suit if it enters the hobby in numbers, but no such report exists yet. For now this remains data sparse, and any breeding protocol offered for this species specifically would be invented rather than documented.
In the aquarium
Eigenmannia oradens is not established in the aquarium trade in any documented way; this section draws on the general husbandry of the genus, which is kept and occasionally bred under the name glass knifefish (most often as E. virescens). Glass knifefish are considered one of the more approachable gymnotiforms for a dedicated keeper — modest in size compared to black ghosts or rattails, gregarious rather than solitary, and generally peaceful toward fish too large to be seen as prey, though still a nocturnal micro-predator that should not be trusted with very small fish or shrimp after dark.
As with all knifefish, the scaleless skin makes water quality and medication choice critical: ammonia and nitrate must be kept low, and copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard medications should be avoided or reduced. A dim, sheltered tank with soft cover — roots, plants or pipes — to retreat into by day suits the group's nocturnal habits and electrosensory lifestyle. Given how little is documented about this particular species, any aquarist attempting it should treat it as an experimental, specialist fish and favour captive-bred stock of the genus generally over wild collection.
Conservation
Eigenmannia oradens has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified Not Evaluated. As a species described only in 2018 from a single river system — the Río Ventuari in the Orinoco basin — it has not yet received the kind of population or threat assessment that would support a status.
Single-river endemics of this kind are generally the more vulnerable glass knifefish, since their entire known range can be affected by localised habitat change, damming, pollution or deforestation, even where the wider genus remains secure. No specific threats to E. oradens have been documented, and in the absence of assessment data no claim beyond Not Evaluated can responsibly be made.
