Taxonomy & naming
Rhabdolichops caviceps was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1968 and belongs to the family Sternopygidae, the glass and rattail knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but highly unusual ones, defined by an electric organ running the length of the body and a ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion in place of a normal tail. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.
Sternopygidae is one of several gymnotiform families and is distinguished from its relatives by a wave-type electric organ discharge — a continuous, near-sinusoidal hum rather than the intermittent pulses produced by families such as Gymnotidae. The genus Rhabdolichops sits alongside Eigenmannia, Sternopygus and Distocyclus within the family; species in this genus tend to be open-water, deep-channel fish rather than the shallow, vegetated-margin dwellers more typical of Eigenmannia. As with many gymnotiforms, Rhabdolichops caviceps is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order and resemble it only by convergent body shape.
Morphology
Rhabdolichops caviceps has the classic sternopygid build: a slender, laterally compressed body that tapers to a fine point at the tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin. Locomotion comes from a single long anal fin running along most of the underside of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal control — a hallmark of the whole order. The body is scaleless and largely translucent to glassy in life, a trait shared with its better-known relative Eigenmannia, the glass knifefish.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of sensory pores (the electroreceptors) that read the field it produces. Like other Sternopygidae, R. caviceps generates a continuous, wave-type electric organ discharge rather than discrete pulses, using it for electrolocation — sensing objects, prey and other fish by how they distort its private electric field — and very likely for communication with other individuals of its species, as is well documented in its relative Eigenmannia. Habitat
Rhabdolichops caviceps is a Neotropical species, native to freshwater river systems of tropical South America. Like other members of its genus, it is generally associated with open, flowing water — deep river channels rather than the shallow, densely vegetated margins favored by some of its sternopygid relatives — though precise locality records and the full extent of its range are not well documented in accessible sources.
As with other electric knifefishes, its habitat is typically warm, soft, and often turbid or tannin-stained, conditions under which vision is of limited use and an electric sense is a considerable advantage. It is presumed, in line with its family, to be most active after dark, using electrolocation to navigate and hunt in water where light penetration is poor.
Feeding

Warm, soft, near-neutral to acidic, dimly lit water in the spirit of a Neotropical river channel would suit it, along with strong but not disruptive flow given its open-water habits.
As a presumed nocturnal micro-predator, it would need generous cover and subdued lighting to feel secure, and — as with other knifefishes — is unlikely to be safe alongside fish or invertebrates small enough to be hunted at night. In practice, this is not a species the average aquarist will encounter or need to plan a tank around; it belongs among the many gymnotiforms that remain essentially unknown outside of taxonomic and museum records.
Conservation
Rhabdolichops caviceps is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. This is notable given how rarely open-water, deep-channel species like Rhabdolichops are encountered or surveyed relative to their more visible relatives, and reflects a distribution wide enough to support the listing.

As with many Neotropical river fish, plausible general pressures include habitat alteration, damming, and water pollution across South American river basins — but these should be understood as generic regional concerns rather than assessments specific to R. caviceps.
