Taxonomy & naming
Allodontichthys hubbsi was described by Robert R. Miller and Teruya Uyeno in 1980, in the Occasional Papers of the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan (No. 692), under the title "Allodontichthys hubbsi, a new species of Goodeid fish from Southwestern Mexico." The holotype, UMMZ-200221, is an adult male of 2 in standard length collected on 8 March 1955 by R. R. Miller and J. T. Greenbank. Its type locality is a tributary of the Río Tuxpan — the Río La Trampa, also known as the Arroyo San José de Tule — at the Highway 110 bridge near Crucero del Tule, about 5 mi north of Pihuamo, Jalisco. The species sits in the family Goodeidae (the splitfins), subfamily Goodeinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes.
The genus Allodontichthys was erected by Hubbs and Turner in 1939, and its name is built from Greek roots — allos ("other" or "different"), odous ("tooth") and ichthys ("fish") — meaning roughly "fish with different teeth," a reference to the distinctive tricuspid dentition of the group. The species epithet hubbsi honours the American ichthyologist Carl L. Hubbs (1894–1979), whose early studies of the goodeids laid the foundation for understanding the family. The fish carries a notable cytogenetic peculiarity: it is one of very few fishes — and the only goodeid — known to possess multiple sex chromosomes, with a male karyotype of 2n=41 and a female karyotype of 2n=42 (Miller & Uyeno, 1972).
The species is usually sympatric with its congener Allodontichthys tamazulae, the two partitioning the same streams by microhabitat: A. hubbsi shelters under large rocks and boulders in the open riffle, while A. tamazulae keeps to roots and riparian vegetation along the banks.
Morphology
Allodontichthys hubbsi is a small splitfin, reaching about 2.5 in in total length, with the largest known specimens running to roughly 2.5 in standard length (Miller et al., 2005). It is built for life on the bottom of fast water: an elongate, robust body and — most tellingly — a reduced swim bladder that extends only to the fourth or fifth rib, an adaptation that keeps the fish low and stable in current rather than buoyant in open water. The overall niche and body plan are strikingly convergent on the North American darters (Etheostoma), unrelated riffle fishes that solve the same problem in the same way.
In life the species is soberly coloured — Miller and Uyeno reported no bright pigments. The pattern instead consists of dark markings: males carry three to five rows of dark spots on the dorsal fin, nine to eleven bars across the upper body, and a prominent dark scapular bar immediately behind the pectoral fin. A characteristic line of black blotching divides the upper and lower body, giving the fish its patchy, two-toned look. The dentition is distinctive for the genus — tricuspid, forked teeth — matched to a carnivorous diet and paired with a notably short gut.
Sexual dimorphism is clear once the fish mature. Males develop a larger, more intensely spotted dorsal fin and the andropodium — the modified anterior anal-fin rays that define the splitfins — and are generally more strongly marked, with the body-splitting dark line more pronounced. Females are duller and plainer.
Habitat
Allodontichthys hubbsi is a narrow-range endemic of the upper Coahuayana River basin in Jalisco, southwestern Mexico, known historically from only six areas. It is a riffle specialist of clear mountain streams roughly 10–26 ft wide — up to about 98 ft in the main Río Tuxpan — living around and under the stones and boulders of rocky riffles. The streams are well oxygenated and often shaded by Salix (willow) with abundant green algae on the substrate; recorded depths range from about 0–8 ft, with moderate to swift current that becomes torrential during the wet summer.
Water temperatures in the field run from about 64–72 °F, with air temperatures of 75–82 °F — these are cool, upland waters rather than warm lowland habitats. FishBase records a tropical range of 70–77 °F, with pH 7.0–7.7 and hardness of 5–20 dH. The fish's reduced swim bladder, low-slung posture and habit of sheltering beneath rocks all suit it to holding station in fast, broken water.
The species is divided into two evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) defined by genetic analyses. The northern lineage, Aldhu1, occupies four areas of the Tamazula River drainage — segments of the Tamazula River itself plus the San Jerónimo River, an unnamed Tamazula tributary, and Contla Stream — and is assessed as Endangered. The southern lineage, Aldhu2, persists as small, isolated populations in three Coahuayana tributaries situated above waterfalls (San José del Tule, El Terrero and Pihuamo) and is regarded as Critically Endangered.
Feeding
Allodontichthys hubbsi is a carnivore, occupying a low trophic level (FishBase gives a trophic level of about 2.1) but feeding squarely on animal prey. Its dentition — tricuspid, forked teeth — and its short digestive tract (the gut measuring only about 0.67 to 1.20% of total length) are both consistent with a diet of soft-bodied and lightly armoured invertebrates rather than algae or detritus.
In its riffle habitat the fish takes large insect larvae, particularly mayfly larvae, along with amphipods and chironomid larvae (bloodworms). It may also take juvenile Macrobrachium freshwater shrimp where these occur. This is a fish that picks prey from among the stones and from the current, echoing the feeding ecology of the darters it so closely resembles in form and habitat.
In captivity the species accepts a carnivorous regimen of small live and frozen foods — bloodworms, chironomids, small crustaceans and similar items — in keeping with its wild diet.
Mating
Like all goodeids, Allodontichthys hubbsi reproduces by internal fertilisation and is viviparous. The functional equivalent of the poeciliid gonopodium in the splitfins is the andropodium: in male goodeids the first roughly seven anterior rays of the anal fin are shortened and partly separated, forming a notch — the "split fin" that gives the family its English name — used to transfer sperm to the female. Unlike the long, fused gonopodium of guppies and their relatives, the goodeid andropodium is a more modest modification of the front of the anal fin.
Breeding is strongly seasonal and temperature-cued. Reproduction begins in spring as water warms to about 68–70 °F, then halts both in the warm summer (above roughly 77 °F) and in the cold winter (below about 68 °F). Goodeid Working Group surveys in 2019 found gravid females at varying stages of development together with freshly born fry across several sites, confirming active wild reproduction within this temperature window.
Sexual selection in the species expresses through the dimorphic males, which carry the andropodium, a larger and more heavily spotted dorsal fin, and stronger overall marking. Males are also notably aggressive — in confined quarters they will kill rival males and even females — which suggests a reproductive system built around male competition rather than elaborate colour display, fitting for a fish that lacks bright pigment.
Breeding
Allodontichthys hubbsi is a matrotrophic live-bearer — the defining reproductive specialisation of the Goodeinae. Rather than provisioning the egg with yolk in advance, the female nourishes the developing embryos throughout gestation by means of trophotaeniae, ribbon-like external structures that extend from the embryo's vent and absorb nutrients from the mother, functioning much like a placenta. The young are therefore born as well-developed, free-swimming fry. Goodeids do not exhibit the sperm-storage-driven superfetation of some poeciliids; broods develop together and are born as a cohort.
Field observations bracket the reproductive season tightly between cold winters and hot summers. Gravid females and fresh-born fry recorded in spring surveys indicate that births coincide with the warming, productive months. The fry hide among shallow-margin vegetation such as Potamogeton, sheltering from current and predators in the quiet edges of the streams.
In aquarium culture, breeders mirror the wild thermal cycle: reproduction is triggered as temperatures rise into the low 20s °C in spring, and keepers are advised to give the fish a winter rest below 68 °F for two to three months to maintain condition and reproductive rhythm. As with the fish's aggression, brood-rearing benefits from generous space and structure so that fry and recovering females can keep clear of dominant adults.
In the aquarium
Allodontichthys hubbsi is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's livebearer. It demands a large, well-structured tank — recommendations run to 40 US gal or more — with a low, broad footprint that maximises floor area over depth. The aquascape should reproduce the riffle: rocks and boulders for shelter, roots and wood for structure, moderate to swift current from strong flow, and high dissolved oxygen, ideally 8 mg/L or above. Large weekly water changes of 60–80% keep the cool, clean, oxygen-rich conditions the species needs.
Temperament is the central husbandry challenge. Males are aggressive to the point of killing rivals and females in small or under-structured tanks, so the fish are sometimes kept singly or in carefully managed groups with abundant broken sight-lines and hiding places. The cool-water requirement also rules out a typical heated community setup; the fish can in fact be kept outdoors from spring through autumn where daytime water temperatures stay above about 63 °F, taking advantage of natural seasonal cooling and the temperature cues that drive breeding.
This combination of needs — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water, a large rocky tank, aggressive males and a seasonal thermal cycle — places A. hubbsi firmly in the domain of dedicated goodeid keepers and conservation-minded aquarists, the people most likely to maintain it as part of ex-situ efforts for an endangered species.
Conservation
Allodontichthys hubbsi is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii), with a population trend listed as decreasing. The assessment reflects the fish's tiny range — only six known areas in the upper Coahuayana River basin — and the ongoing decline in its extent of occurrence, area of occupancy and habitat quality. In Mexico it is additionally listed under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 as "P" (En Peligro de Extinción, in danger of extinction).
The species' two genetic lineages differ in status. The northern Tamazula-drainage unit (Aldhu1) is Endangered but comparatively stable, with Contla Stream holding the best-documented population of several hundred adults. The southern unit (Aldhu2), confined to small, isolated populations in three Coahuayana tributaries above waterfalls, is Critically Endangered: 2019 surveys found only dozens of fish at San José del Tule, a single individual at El Terrero, and none at the Pihuamo site. Across six decades of collecting, only about 264 museum specimens have ever been sampled — a measure of both the fish's rarity and its restricted range.
The threats are those facing narrow-range Mexican goodeids generally: habitat degradation, water extraction and pollution in small upland streams, and the inherent fragility of isolated populations confined above natural barriers. For an aquarist, the relevant role is the conservation one — A. hubbsi is exactly the kind of species for which the Goodeid Working Group and dedicated keepers maintain ex-situ populations, and responsible husbandry of such fishes is a contribution to their survival rather than a hobby for its own sake.
