Alloophorus robustus is the family bruiser among the Mexican goodeids — a stout, big-jawed splitfin that abandoned the plankton-and-algae diet of its relatives to become the most thoroughly carnivorous member of the family, hunting other fishes pike-style in the springs and endorheic lakes of the west-central Mexican plateau. The sole species of its genus, it is a livebearer in the goodeid manner, nourishing its young inside the mother through ribbon-like umbilical structures rather than a yolk sac. Once recorded from more than fifty localities across the upper Río Lerma basin, it has been squeezed out of the larger lakes and rivers and now survives mainly in scattered spring-fed refuges, and the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Alloophorus robustus was first described by Tarleton Hoffman Bean in 1892 as Fundulus robustus, on material collected in Mexico by the naturalist Alfredo Dugès around 1891. The type locality has long been a source of confusion: Bean gave only "Mexico," while the holotype is now labelled Pátzcuaro and the allotype Guanajuato. Over the following decades the fish was shuffled through several combinations and accumulated a string of synonyms, including Fundulus parvipinnis Garman, 1895, Zoogoneticus robustus Meek, 1902, and Zoogoneticus maculatus Regan, 1904. The species epithet robustus is Latin for "strong," a reference to its stout build and powerful jaws relative to the slighter Fundulus species among which Bean originally placed it.

The genus Alloophorus was erected by Hubbs and Turner (published by Turner in 1937, and formalised in the 1939 monograph of the family) to hold this single distinctive fish; it remains monotypic. The genus name is built from Greek roots — allos (different) plus oon (egg) plus phoros (to carry) — and points to the distinctive structure of the ovary and the trophotaeniae, the absorptive ribbons by which goodeid embryos take up nourishment from the mother. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Alloophorus robustus (Bean, 1892) as the valid name, placing it in the subfamily Goodeinae of the family Goodeidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The species is not genetically uniform across its range. Molecular and morphological work recognises two principal lineages and several evolutionarily significant units; the western "maculatus" populations have been flagged as possibly representing a separate, still-undescribed species (Lineage B). For now the atlas follows the Catalog of Fishes in treating Alloophorus robustus as a single valid species, while noting that its taxonomy at the population level is unresolved.

Morphology

Alloophorus robustus is a heavy-bodied splitfin reaching about 6 in standard length, large for a goodeid, with the deep belly and thick caudal peduncle that earn it the names "bulldog goodeid" and "bulldog splitfin." The head is broad and the mouth large, set with strong jaws and sharply conical teeth — the equipment of a predator rather than a grazer. The base colour is a pale brown, overlaid in most fish by numerous large dark blotches scattered along the sides; in juveniles these blotches extend down onto the belly, and they tend to fade in the largest adults.

Sexual dimorphism is present but understated compared with the gaudy poeciliids. As in all goodeids, the male lacks the rod-like gonopodium of the live-bearing toothcarps; instead the front rays of the anal fin are shortened and partly separated to form the andropodium, a notched structure used to transfer sperm. Breeding males may show — though only occasionally — a subterminal black band and a yellow terminal band in the median fins, a modest nuptial flourish against the otherwise plain brown ground colour. Females run larger and deeper-bodied, especially when gravid.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the endorheic uplands of west-central Mexico, historically ranging across the states of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacán in the middle and upper Río Lerma basin and adjacent closed drainages. Recorded localities have included the endorheic lakes Pátzcuaro and Zirahuén, the Río Grande de Morelia and Lago Cuitzeo system, the Río Angulo and Lago Zacapu, several middle-Lerma tributaries (the ríos Laja, Turbio and Guanajuato), the spring-fed Río Duero, and the Lago de Chapala–Río Grande de Santiago system, with outliers reaching the headwaters of the Río Balsas. This is an unusually broad range for a goodeid, most of which are pinned to single springs or lakes.

Within these waters Alloophorus robustus favours springs and the vegetated margins of lakes, often among reeds and aquatic plants and sometimes in flowing water. Juveniles have been taken in shallow water only about 12 in deep amid dense vegetation. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish of roughly 70–77 °F, occupying latitudes from about 21° to 19° N. Much of its former range has been lost: the species is now considered extirpated from Lago de Chapala, the Río Santiago, most of the Río Lerma proper, and Laguna de Yuriria, with its surviving strongholds concentrated in spring habitats such as the Río Duero springs (La Luz, Orandino), the Molino Viejo de Chapultepec spring near Morelia, Lago Zacapu, and the La Mintzita spring.

Feeding

Alloophorus robustus is the most highly developed carnivore in the goodeid family. Where most splitfins rasp algae and pick at small invertebrates, this species is built to hunt: a large mouth, powerful jaws, sharply conic teeth and a notably short intestine all mark it as a meat-eater rather than a grazer. In the wild it preys on other fishes — a young Poeciliopsis infans has been recovered from one stomach — along with large insects and worms, and it is described as hunting in an ambush, pike-like fashion among vegetation.

In the aquarium the diet should respect that biology, favouring meaty foods such as earthworms, insect larvae, and other substantial live or frozen items rather than a flake-based regime. One practical consequence of feeding a predator is the waste load: a carnivorous diet produces more metabolic waste than the plant-heavy diets of other goodeids, so keepers report that generous water changes — even an automated water-changing system — help keep these fish in good health.

Mating

Like all goodeids, Alloophorus robustus practises internal fertilisation, but by a different mechanism from the familiar poeciliid livebearers. The male does not possess a true gonopodium; instead the anterior rays of the anal fin are crowded and notched into a structure called the andropodium, which is used to introduce sperm to the female. Courtship and mating in the genus are not well documented in the literature, and detailed behavioural accounts are sparse.

The reproductive cycle appears to be seasonal rather than year-round. Mendoza's mid-twentieth-century work found females carrying developing young from around August onward, yet birth concentrated in the spring (April to June), which points to a single annual brood cycle keyed to the warming of the water. In the aquarium this seasonality can be honoured by giving the fish a cool winter rest below about 68 °F for two to three months, during which breeding stops — a rhythm that keepers find helps maintain the fishes' long-term health and disease resistance.

Breeding

Reproduction is viviparous in the goodeid manner. After internal fertilisation the embryos develop inside the mother and are nourished not by a yolk sac but through trophotaeniae — ribbon-like extensions that grow from the embryo's vent and serve as a placenta-like organ, absorbing nutrients directly from the ovarian lining. The young are therefore born as comparatively large, fully formed fish; goodeids do not exhibit the sperm-storage superfetation of guppies and mollies, and Alloophorus produces a single well-developed brood per season rather than a continuous string of small ones.

The historical breeding records are unusually detailed for a goodeid. Meek, collecting in May 1904, found females of 4.5 in carrying 20 to 38 young, each already 0.5 in long, and free-swimming fry of 1 in SL appeared from mid-May to mid-June; a 0.5 in juvenile taken in a warm (76 °F) spring in February shows that warm refuges can shift the timing. Mendoza (1962) reported an average brood of about 23.7 young per ovary, with only 0.42 % runts — a striking investment in a small number of large, robust offspring. In captivity the fry are big enough to take substantial foods from birth, but because the adults are predatory the young must be given dense cover or raised separately.

In the aquarium

Alloophorus robustus is a fish for the dedicated goodeid keeper rather than the casual community aquarist. It is large, predatory and waste-producing, which means a roomy aquarium, strong filtration and a commitment to frequent or automated water changes. Because it is a fish-eater, it should not be housed with anything small enough to be regarded as prey, and its tankmates are best limited to similarly robust fishes or to a species setup.

Water management is the crux of keeping this species well. Keepers have learned the hard way that constant high temperatures above about 75 °F combined with poor water quality lead to disease, loss of disease resistance and premature ageing; the fish does far better with clean water and a seasonal temperature swing. Providing a winter rest below 68 °F for two to three months — which also halts breeding — mimics the natural cycle and appears to keep the fish vigorous and long-lived. Given those provisions it is a hardy and characterful aquarium animal, but it rewards husbandry that respects its predatory, seasonal nature rather than treating it like a typical small livebearer.

Conservation

Alloophorus robustus is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (assessment 17 April 2018), under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv). The assessment reflects a fish that once ranged widely — known from more than fifty localities — but has contracted sharply, now reduced to roughly ten subpopulations across the west-central Mexican plateau and dependent on a handful of spring-fed refuges. It has disappeared from major waters including Lago de Chapala, the Río Santiago, most of the Río Lerma, and Laguna de Yuriria.

The pressures are the familiar ones of the Mexican highland fishes: the long decline of freshwater habitats in west-central Mexico documented by Lyons and colleagues, driven by water extraction, pollution, habitat loss and introduced species, which has hit the endemic goodeids especially hard. Because so much of the species' security now rests on individual springs — the Río Duero springs, the Molino Viejo de Chapultepec spring, La Mintzita, and Lago Zacapu — the loss of any one of these refuges would be significant. As with many threatened goodeids, captive populations maintained by hobbyist groups such as the Goodeid Working Group serve as an ark, holding the genetic lineages of a fish whose wild future is far from assured.
