Taxonomy & naming
Ataeniobius toweri was first described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1904, in his monograph The fresh-water fishes of Mexico north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, under the name Goodea toweri. The original material — a holotype now catalogued as FMNH-4519, an adult female 2.5 in in standard length — was collected at Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi, by William L. Tower in August 1903, and no more precise locality has ever been recorded for it. Meek named the fish for its collector. The genus Ataeniobius was erected later, through the work of Turner (1937) and Hubbs & Turner (1939), to set the species apart from Goodea; under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes the valid name is Ataeniobius toweri (Meek, 1904), with Goodea toweri as a synonym.
The name of the genus is itself a description of the animal's defining feature. It combines the Greek a- (without) with the Latin taenia (a band or ribbon) and the Greek bios (life) — roughly "living without a ribbon" — because, uniquely among the splitfins, the newborn young of this species lack the trophotaeniae, the ribbon-like nutritive processes that trail from the vent of goodeid embryos and absorb nourishment from the mother. The species epithet honours Dr William L. Tower (1872–1955), an evolutionary biologist and professor of zoology at the University of Chicago.
Ataeniobius belongs to the subfamily Goodeinae of the family Goodeidae, the splitfins, a group of viviparous toothcarps centred on the highlands and springs of central Mexico. Its position within the family was long taken for granted as a near-relative of Goodea, but molecular work by Dominguez-Dominguez and colleagues (2012) instead places it close to Skiffia, within the tribe Girardinichthyini — meaning the absence of trophotaeniae in the fry is most likely a secondary loss rather than an ancestral trait.
Morphology
The bluetail goodea is a modest, fairly slender splitfin. Females are the larger sex, reaching about 4 in in total length, while males stay smaller, to roughly 3 in; the largest recorded standard length is around 3 in (Miller et al. 2005). In life the body is a light silvery-grey, marked along the flank by two dark horizontal lines, and some individuals carry a series of four to eleven faint vertical bars across the caudal peduncle. It is not a showy fish — its appeal to specialists lies in its rarity and its biology rather than in bright colour.
The most reliable colour signal appears in breeding condition. Mature males develop an azure-blue caudal fin and a whitish anal fin, and can take on an overall pale-blue cast across the body, which is the source of both the English name "bluetail goodea" and the Mexican name mexclapique cola azul. Outside the breeding period the sexes are much harder to tell apart on colour alone.
As in all goodeids, the male's anal fin is modified into the mating organ that gives the family its common name: the first several rays are shortened and set off by a notch — the andropodium or "splitfin" — rather than fused into the gonopodium tube seen in the New World poeciliids. Males also tend to have a slightly larger dorsal fin. The long, coiled gut typical of an algae-eater is another internal hallmark of the species.
Habitat
Ataeniobius toweri is a narrow endemic, confined to the Rio Verde valley in San Luis Potosi, Mexico — part of the Rio Verde subbasin within the Rio Tamuin drainage of the larger Panuco hydrographic region. Its world is essentially a cluster of thermal springs and their outflows in and around the town of Rio Verde: the celebrated Laguna de la Media Luna, together with Los Anteojitos, Charco Azul, Los Peroles and El Aguaje near Villa Juarez, draining away through Arroyo Santa Rita, the Rio Las Calabazas, the Rio Choy and irrigation channels such as the Acequia Gigantal. Genetically the whole population forms a single evolutionarily significant unit.
The fish favours quiet to moderate current — the shallow margins of lagoons, marshes and ditches and the clear outflows of springs — at depths down to about a metre, often among aquatic vegetation such as Nymphaea, Scirpus, Juncus and Eichhornia and over green algae. Substrates range from silt, mud and sand to gravel and rock. Newborn young are found in extremely shallow water, on the order of a few centimetres deep, at the very edges of the system.
The water itself is distinctive. The Media Luna springs are clear and strongly sulfurous, running warm at roughly 79–86 °F, with El Aguaje closer to 79 °F; FishBase records the species from tropical waters of about 72–86 °F. The chemistry is hard and alkaline — pH around 7.9 or above and very high hardness (dGH on the order of 50 or more) — reflecting the mineral-rich groundwater that feeds these springs.
Feeding
The bluetail goodea is essentially a herbivore and grazer. Its low trophic level (around 2.0 in FishBase) and its long, coiled intestine both point to a diet built mainly on algae and aufwuchs — the film of algae, microorganisms and detritus that coats submerged surfaces. In its spring habitats it is reported nibbling the vertical stems of reeds and waterlilies, working over plant surfaces for this growth, and supplementing it with small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding to feed but does best on a diet that respects its largely vegetable natural intake. A good-quality flake or pellet with a substantial algal or spirulina component, combined with the algae and biofilm that develop on plants, rocks and glass, suits it well, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp can be offered for variety and conditioning. As with other grazing splitfins, steady access to plant matter matters more than rich, protein-heavy feeding, which these fish are not adapted to process.
Mating
Ataeniobius toweri is a viviparous livebearer, like all goodeids, and fertilisation is internal. Unlike the New World poeciliids — guppies, mollies and their kin — which use a rod-like gonopodium formed from elongated and fused anal-fin rays, the male splitfin transfers sperm using the andropodium: the first roughly seven rays of the anal fin are shortened and separated by a notch, producing the cleft, or "split," that gives the family its common name. The male presses this modified fin against the female to deliver sperm directly.
Sexual dimorphism is the practical guide to sexing the fish: males carry the notched anal fin and a somewhat larger dorsal, and in breeding condition flush their characteristic blue caudal and whitish anal fins, while females are larger-bodied and plainer. There is no record in this species of the sperm-storage and superfetation (carrying several broods at different stages at once) seen in some poeciliids; goodeid reproduction generally runs on discrete, well-developed broods rather than the near-continuous output of a guppy.
Breeding is seasonal rather than constant. In the wild the species has a long but defined breeding period: small juveniles of about 0.5 in are found from November through March, and pregnant females are recorded into May, indicating young are dropped over an extended late-winter-to-spring window.
Breeding
Reproduction is the feature that defines this fish. Gestation lasts on the order of 60 days, after which the female gives birth to a relatively small brood — typically about 5 to 15 fully formed, free-swimming young — with sexual maturity reached at six to seven months of age. The defining peculiarity is that the fry of Ataeniobius toweri are born without functional trophotaeniae, the ribbon-like rectal processes that, in other goodeids, act as a placenta-like organ absorbing maternal nutrients during development. Work by Lombardi and colleagues (1989) showed that near-term embryos do form a prototypic anal trophotaenia, so the adult lack of the structure represents a secondary evolutionary loss rather than a primitive absence — which is part of why the species is of such interest to students of livebearer reproduction.
In captivity it is a manageable, even easy, colony breeder, and notably the adults do not generally cannibalise the fry, so young can often be raised alongside their parents in a well-planted tank. Newborns settle into very shallow water and take small foods readily as they grow. Keepers commonly use temperature to regulate breeding: a cooler winter rest below about 72 °F — down toward 64 °F — sets the fish up to spawn in spring at around 73–75 °F, with reproduction tailing off as temperatures climb toward 82 °F.
Because the wild population is small, endemic and threatened, the aquarium hobby — particularly specialist groups such as the Goodeid Working Group — plays a genuine conservation role here, maintaining captive lines as a hedge against losses in the springs of Rio Verde.
In the aquarium
The bluetail goodea is a fish for the dedicated livebearer or conservation keeper rather than the casual community aquarist — not because it is difficult, but because it is plain, uncommon, and best appreciated as a piece of living biology. It is undemanding in temperament and adapts to aquarium life readily, but it has specific needs around water quality and chemistry that follow directly from its spring-fed home.
A tank of around 25 US gal or more suits a group; height is not important (about 10 in is ample), but the fish do best with moderate to gentle current and, crucially, high dissolved oxygen — keepers aim for around 8 mg/L or more — supported by large, frequent water changes on the order of 60–80% weekly. The water should match the wild profile: hard and alkaline, with pH at or above neutral, and warm but not hot, broadly in the low-to-high 20s Celsius with that cooler winter rest to drive breeding. Good filtration and clean, well-oxygenated water are the recurring themes.
Being a peaceable, algae-grazing species, it is no threat to its own fry and is generally undemanding socially, which makes it a satisfying colony fish for a species tank. Sourcing is the real consideration: as an Endangered endemic, it is most reliably obtained through livebearer and goodeid specialist networks, where keeping a healthy line going is itself part of the point.
Conservation
Ataeniobius toweri is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (criteria A2ac; B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), reflecting both a documented decline and the species' extremely restricted range. In Mexico it is additionally protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, which lists it in the highest national category, P (en peligro de extincion — in danger of extinction), and the status review by Lyons and colleagues (2019) likewise described it as endangered and declining.
The threats all stem from the fact that the entire species depends on one small spring system. The flagship habitat, Laguna de la Media Luna, and the neighbouring Los Anteojitos suffer habitat degradation from tourism and recreational diving, which damages the aquatic macrophytes the fish relies on, while groundwater pumping and pollution chip away at the springs' flow and quality. Layered on top is competition and predation pressure from introduced poeciliids, notably Poecilia mexicana, which have established themselves in the same waters. Both Media Luna and Los Anteojitos carry some protected status as reserves, which offers a measure of safeguard for the most important sites.
For an aquarist the conservation message is straightforward: this is a species whose long-term survival genuinely benefits from captive maintenance. Coordinated hobbyist breeding programmes — the kind run by the Goodeid Working Group — keep insurance populations of this and other imperilled Mexican goodeids alive outside their shrinking native springs, and responsible keeping, never releasing fish, and supporting habitat protection in San Luis Potosi are the practical contributions a keeper can make.
