Taxonomy & naming
Gambusia longispinis was described by the American ichthyologist W. L. Minckley in 1962, from specimens collected in the Cuatro Ciénegas basin of Coahuila, in northern Mexico. The species belongs to the genus Gambusia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and the subfamily Poeciliinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia longispinis Minckley, 1962 as the valid name. The genus Gambusia is large and centred on Mexico, the southern United States and the Caribbean; it contains the mosquitofishes and a swarm of small, often narrowly endemic spring and stream species, of which the Cuatro Ciénegas form is one.
The genus name Gambusia derives from the Cuban Spanish term "gambusino," loosely "nothing" — fishing for gambusinos meant catching nothing of value, a wry reference to the small size and modest food value of these fishes. The specific epithet longispinis means "long spine," a Latin compound that refers to the elongate spines of the gonopodium, the modified anal fin of the male, which Minckley used as a diagnostic feature in distinguishing the species. As with most Gambusia, the male's gonopodial structure carries much of the taxonomic weight.
Within the Cuatro Ciénegas basin the species shares its waters with a striking suite of other endemics, part of a localised evolutionary radiation that has made the valley a touchstone for studies of how isolated desert wetlands generate and hold biodiversity. G. longispinis is the livebearer representative of that endemic fauna.
Morphology
Gambusia longispinis is a small fish, reaching about 2 in in total length in the largest individuals, with females typically larger and deeper-bodied than the smaller, slimmer males — the usual pattern for the genus. The body is the compact, slightly chunky shape characteristic of Gambusia, with a flattened dorsal profile, an upturned mouth suited to surface and midwater feeding, and a single dorsal fin set well back on the body. Colouration in this species is restrained, in keeping with its clear-water spring habitat, without the saturated pigments of ornamental poeciliids.
The defining structure, and the source of the species name, is the male gonopodium — the anal fin modified into a slender intromittent organ used to transfer sperm to the female. In G. longispinis the gonopodial spines are notably elongate, the feature Minckley emphasised in the original description. Females lack this structure and instead show the broader, deeper abdomen of a livebearer, with a darkened gravid region visible at the rear of the belly when carrying developing young.
Detailed published morphometrics for this narrow-range endemic are sparse outside the primary taxonomic literature, so finer points of fin-ray counts, scale patterning and proportions are best taken from Minckley's original treatment rather than restated here. As a small benthopelagic fish of shallow, vegetated spring waters, it is built for manoeuvrability in the calm, structured environments of the Cuatro Ciénegas pools.
Habitat
Gambusia longispinis is endemic to the Cuatro Ciénegas basin in central Coahuila, northern Mexico — an enclosed desert valley fed by a network of artesian springs that rise into clear, warm, mineral-rich pools, marshes and the short channels that link them. These are calcium- and sulphate-laden waters, hard and alkaline, kept thermally stable by their groundwater source. FishBase records the species in fresh water as benthopelagic and non-migratory, with a pH range of about 7.2 to 7.6, hardness in the range of roughly 10 to 25 dH, and temperatures of about 73–82 °F — figures that match the chemistry of the basin's spring systems.
The fish occupies the shallow, often heavily vegetated margins of these spring-fed waters, where aquatic plants, stromatolite-bearing pools and submerged structure provide cover and foraging surfaces. It is a low-depth species of pools and marshes rather than open or flowing water, and its distribution is effectively the footprint of the surviving spring habitat within the valley.
Because the entire range is one closed basin, the species' habitat is exceptionally vulnerable to anything that alters the water table. Cuatro Ciénegas has long been subject to groundwater extraction and canalisation for agriculture, which lowers spring discharge and shrinks the wetted area — the central conservation problem for every fish that lives there, G. longispinis included.
Feeding
Like other members of its genus, Gambusia longispinis is a small, opportunistic omnivore and micro-predator. FishBase places it at a trophic level of around 3.2, consistent with a diet weighted toward small animal prey but including plant and detrital material. In the clear spring pools of Cuatro Ciénegas it would take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and zooplankton from the water column and surface, supplemented by algae, biofilm and detritus grazed from plants and substrate.
The upturned mouth typical of Gambusia is well suited to feeding at and just below the surface, and mosquito larvae and other surface-associated insect larvae are a natural part of the diet of the genus. Specific gut-content studies for this narrow-range endemic are not well represented in the cached sources, so the dietary picture here is drawn from its placement in Gambusia and its trophic level rather than from species-specific data.
In practical terms the species is an unfussy grazer of small live foods, and would in captivity — were it ever kept, which is rare — accept the same small invertebrate and prepared foods that suit other small poeciliids. Its role in the wild is as one of the small mid-trophic consumers of the basin's invertebrate production.
Mating
Gambusia longispinis is a livebearer with internal fertilisation, the reproductive mode shared by all Poeciliidae. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the anal fin modified into a mobile intromittent organ — in this species marked by the elongate spines that give it its name. Rather than the courtship displays of some poeciliids, Gambusia males are known for a pursuit-and-insemination mating system, in which males actively chase females and attempt rapid gonopodial copulations; the genus is generally characterised by coercive, sneak-style mating with little or no display.
As in other Gambusia, females are able to store sperm internally, so a single insemination can fertilise more than one successive brood without further mating. This sperm-storage capacity, combined with continuous reproduction in the thermally stable spring waters, allows the population to turn over quickly when conditions allow — FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months.
The sexes are readily told apart by the gonopodium: males carry the rod-like modified anal fin and are smaller, while females are larger and deeper-bodied, developing the dark gravid region of the abdomen when carrying young. Beyond these genus-level traits, species-specific behavioural detail for G. longispinis is sparse in the available sources.
Breeding
Reproduction in Gambusia longispinis is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. As in Gambusia generally, the embryos are lecithotrophic — nourished mainly by yolk laid down in the egg rather than by an extensive maternal placenta, so this is a yolk-fed (largely non-placental) form of live-bearing, in contrast to the strongly matrotrophic provisioning seen in some other poeciliid lineages.
Precise brood sizes and gestation periods for this species are not given in the cached sources, and rather than guess at figures the honest position is that this detail is data-sparse for G. longispinis specifically. Gambusia longispinis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a narrow-range, conservation-dependent endemic of a single Mexican desert basin, not a trade fish, and no dedicated hobby care literature for it surfaced in the cached sources. The American Livebearer Association and similar specialist groups occasionally maintain rare Gambusia in conservation-minded captive lines, but this is a matter for organised programmes rather than general fishkeeping.
Were it ever kept, its requirements would follow directly from its habitat: hard, alkaline, mineral-rich water (pH roughly 7.2 to 7.6, hardness about 10 to 25 dH), stable warm temperatures in the region of 73–82 °F, clean and well-oxygenated conditions, and plenty of plant cover mirroring the vegetated spring margins it lives in. As a small, active livebearer it would suit a planted species tank, and like other Gambusia the males can be persistent toward females.
The more important point is conservation rather than husbandry. Given its Endangered status and restricted range, any captive maintenance of this species belongs within properly managed, documented programmes — not the casual trade — and should never involve removing fish from the wild or releasing captive stock. For the ordinary aquarist, the species is best regarded as a fish to read about and protect rather than to keep.
Conservation
Gambusia longispinis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(ii,iii), in an assessment dated 16 November 2018. The listing reflects its status as a restricted-range endemic confined to the Cuatro Ciénegas basin, where the principal threats are the declining extent and quality of its spring-fed habitat. In Mexico the species is additionally recognised under national legislation as a protected (threatened) species.
The core threat is water. Cuatro Ciénegas is a closed desert basin whose fishes depend entirely on artesian spring discharge, and decades of groundwater extraction and canalisation — largely to irrigate agriculture in and around the valley — have lowered the water table, reduced spring flow, and dried or degraded pools and marshes. Because the species exists in this single hydrological system, any further loss of spring habitat directly reduces its area of occupancy and the quality of what remains, which is precisely what the IUCN criteria capture.
Protecting G. longispinis is therefore inseparable from protecting the hydrology of Cuatro Ciénegas as a whole — sustaining spring discharge, limiting groundwater drawdown, and conserving the basin's wetlands as an intact system. The valley's exceptional concentration of endemic species gives that effort weight well beyond this one small livebearer, but the fish is a clear indicator: as the springs go, so goes Gambusia longispinis.
