Taxonomy & naming
Gambusia nicaraguensis was described by Albert Günther in 1866, on the basis of Central American material, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia nicaraguensis Günther, 1866 as the valid name. It belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, the family Poeciliidae (the New World livebearers), and the subfamily Poeciliinae. The species epithet refers to Nicaragua, part of its Central American range, and gives the fish its usual English name, the Nicaraguan mosquitofish.
The genus Gambusia is large and centred on Central America, the Greater Antilles and the southern United States, and includes the western and eastern mosquitofishes (G. affinis and G. holbrooki) that were spread worldwide for mosquito control. The generic name itself is a piece of fishermen's humour: it derives from the Cuban Spanish word "gambusino," used for something of no value — to fish for gambusinos is to catch nothing. Within this genus G. nicaraguensis is one of the Central American coastal forms rather than one of the much-introduced temperate species, and it remains comparatively little studied; the principal taxonomic treatment is Lucinda's 2003 Poeciliidae account in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.
Morphology
Gambusia nicaraguensis is a small, elongate fish with an oval body cross-section and a pointed snout. It shows the typical poeciliid sexual size dimorphism in which females are distinctly larger than males: recorded maxima are about 1 in standard length for males and roughly 1.5 in SL for females. The head and body are plain gray, without the saturated colour of the ornamental livebearers.
The clearest field marks are dark. A small triangular black blotch sits below the eye, and the caudal fin carries a vertical series of six or seven black spots through its centre; similar spots are sometimes present on the dorsal fin, and the anal fin is dusky. The dorsal fin is set well back, inserting behind the end of the anal-fin base. As in all Gambusia, the male's anal fin is modified into a slender gonopodium used for internal fertilisation, the single most reliable way to tell the sexes apart apart from the size and body-depth difference.
Habitat
The species is distributed along the Central American coast, from Guatemala south to Panama. It is a benthopelagic, tropical fish of fresh and brackish water — FishBase records it from water of about 77–79 °F — and it tolerates the salinity gradients of the coastal zone well.
What is striking about G. nicaraguensis is how tightly it is tied to the sea margin in the few records that exist. It has been collected only on a handful of occasions, in every case at the mouths of slow-moving streams, in brackish or fresh water within a few metres of the sea. There it swims in small groups near the surface over sandy or muddy bottoms. This is a sparse data picture — the species is genuinely poorly collected — so the apparent restriction to stream mouths may reflect limited sampling as much as a true ecological preference, and the figures here should be read as indicative rather than a full envelope.
Feeding
Gambusia nicaraguensis is a micro-predator that feeds on aquatic insects, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2 — squarely carnivorous-leaning for a small surface fish. Swimming in small groups near the surface, it is well placed to take insect larvae and other small invertebrates from the upper water column and surface film, the foraging style that gives the genus its "mosquitofish" reputation.
There is little published detail on the diet of this particular species beyond the insect-feeding note, so a fuller breakdown would be speculation. By analogy with its better-studied congeners, a wild diet dominated by aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans, supplemented opportunistically with other drifting items, is the reasonable expectation; in captivity members of the genus take small live, frozen and prepared foods readily.
Mating
Like all poeciliids in the genus, Gambusia nicaraguensis reproduces by internal fertilisation rather than external spawning. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; in Gambusia this organ is tipped with small hooks and serrae that help anchor it during the brief copulation.
Gambusia courtship is generally minimal compared with the elaborate displays of guppies — males devote much of their effort to persistent pursuit and to thrusting attempts at copulation rather than to colour display, which fits a plain-bodied species like this one. As in other livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can fertilise more than one successive brood. Specific mating behaviour for G. nicaraguensis has not been documented in detail, and these points are drawn from the well-established reproductive pattern of the genus rather than from observations of this species.
Breeding
Gambusia nicaraguensis is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This live-bearing mode, shared across the genus, is one reason Gambusia species are such resilient colonisers — FishBase rates the species as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months.
Species-specific figures for gestation length and brood size in G. nicaraguensis are not available in the sources consulted, so no precise numbers are given here rather than guessing. In the genus generally, gestation runs on the order of three to four weeks and varies with temperature, brood size scales with the size of the female, and superfetation — carrying broods at more than one stage of development at once — occurs in some Gambusia, though whether it applies to this particular species has not been established. The newborn fry are fully formed miniatures, able to swim and feed immediately.
In the aquarium
Gambusia nicaraguensis is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; it is a fish known from museum collections and faunal surveys rather than from aquarium shops, and there is no established body of hobbyist husbandry experience specific to it. Anyone keeping it would most likely be working with wild-caught coastal stock under a research or conservation context rather than buying it commercially.
What can be said is generic to the genus and to the species' recorded ecology. It is a small, surface-oriented shoaling fish from warm water around 77–79 °F that tolerates brackish conditions, so a group in a well-filtered tank with some salinity tolerance and surface swimming space would suit it. As with Gambusia broadly, males harass females persistently, so a female-skewed ratio reduces stress, and the genus's predatory, sometimes fin-nipping temperament makes it a poor mix with slow or long-finned tankmates. Given how little is documented, husbandry notes here are extrapolated from related mosquitofishes, not verified for this species.
Conservation
Gambusia nicaraguensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species is widespread along the Central American coast from Guatemala to Panama, has high reproductive resilience, and is rated as having low vulnerability to fishing, so it carries no significant species-level threat in the current assessment.
FishBase characterises the fish as harmless, and its fishing vulnerability is scored very low (about 10 on a 100-point scale). It is not listed under CITES or CMS. As with the genus generally, the more relevant conservation note is the inverse of a threat to the species itself: Gambusia are hardy, fecund livebearers with a long history of being moved around the world for mosquito control and becoming invasive, so the responsible position is never to release any mosquitofish into waters outside its native range, where it can establish quickly and harm local fishes and amphibians.
