The mangrove gambusia is a small live-bearing toothcarp tied tightly to one habitat: the tidal creeks that wind beneath the red mangroves of southeastern Florida and northwestern Cuba. Described by Luis Rivas in 1969, Gambusia rhizophorae carries its ecology in its name — rhizophorae honours Rhizophora, the red-mangrove genus whose stilt-rooted shade it almost never leaves. It is a close relative of the ubiquitous mosquitofishes, sharing their hardy, brackish-tolerant, internally fertilising biology, but unlike them it has a narrow, disjunct range and a dependence on a single threatened habitat that makes it far more vulnerable than its abundant cousins.

Taxonomy & naming

Gambusia rhizophorae was described by the ichthyologist Luis René Rivas in 1969, a specialist in the killifishes and livebearers of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia rhizophorae Rivas, 1969 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Gambusia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and the order Cyprinodontiformes. The species belongs to the subfamily Poeciliinae, the live-bearing branch of the family that includes the guppies, mollies, swordtails and the mosquitofishes.

The genus Gambusia is large and centred on the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and the Greater Antilles. Its species are small, often visually similar fishes, and the mangrove gambusia sits among the Caribbean members of the group rather than the familiar mainland mosquitofishes Gambusia affinis and Gambusia holbrooki. Its restricted, disjunct distribution — one set of populations in Cuba and another in Florida — and its specialised mangrove habitat distinguish it from the generalist, widely-introduced mosquitofishes that dominate the genus in the popular imagination.

Morphology

The mangrove gambusia is a small fish, reaching a maximum of about 2 in total length, with a common adult length closer to 1.5 in. Like other members of its genus it has the typical mosquitofish build: a small, upturned mouth set at the top of a slightly flattened head for feeding at the surface, a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, and a rounded caudal fin. The body is laterally compressed and the overall form is unremarkable at a glance — these are subtly marked fishes rather than colourful ones.

As in all live-bearing poeciliids the species is sexually dimorphic. Females are the larger sex and have a deeper, more robust body, while males are smaller and slimmer. The defining male feature is the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally — the hallmark structure of the family. Detailed colour and meristic information for this species is sparse in the popular literature; the conservative description is of a small, pale-to-olive mangrove fish whose most reliable field marks are its habitat and its mosquitofish anatomy rather than any bold pattern.

Habitat

Gambusia rhizophorae is a habitat specialist. FishBase records it from tidal creeks running beneath high-storied red mangroves, and it is precisely this dependence on a single, narrow habitat that the species' conservation notes flag as its principal vulnerability. The fish occupies the shaded, root-tangled brackish channels of the mangrove fringe rather than open water, and its biology is built around that environment.

Its distribution is restricted and strikingly disjunct: one set of populations occurs in northwestern Cuba and another in southeastern Florida, in the United States, with no continuous range linking the two across the Florida Straits. The species is benthopelagic and non-migratory, living in fresh and brackish water — the tidal mangrove creek is by nature a place where salinity shifts with the tide — and it is tropical in its requirements, recorded across a temperature range of roughly 22 to 28 degrees Celsius. This tie to red-mangrove tidal systems means the fish's fortunes are bound to the fortunes of the mangroves themselves, a habitat under pressure from coastal development across much of its range.

Feeding

Like the mosquitofishes it resembles, the mangrove gambusia is a small surface-oriented carnivore and opportunist. In its tidal-creek habitat the diet centres on small invertebrates — insect larvae, including the mosquito larvae for which the genus is famous, together with small crustaceans and other tiny drifting and surface-dwelling animals available among the mangrove roots.

Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are sparse, and the account here follows the general feeding ecology of small Gambusia. Breeding

As a viviparous poeciliid, the mangrove gambusia gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Gambusia rhizophorae is a specialist's fish rather than a beginner's livebearer; it is kept mainly by dedicated livebearer enthusiasts and is not a fixture of the general aquarium trade. Its mosquitofish biology suggests it would be hardy and undemanding in captivity, tolerant of brackish conditions and of the warm temperatures — roughly 22 to 28 degrees Celsius — of its native tidal creeks. A biotope set-up evoking a brackish mangrove channel, with some salt, gentle flow and plenty of root-like cover, would suit it better than a soft, acidic planted tank.

As with the mosquitofishes generally, the practical cautions are behavioural: Gambusia can be nippy and persistent, and males harass females constantly, so a group skewed toward females and ample cover help reduce stress. Detailed captive-care protocols for this particular species are sparse, so husbandry is best extrapolated from its close relatives and its known habitat. One firm point applies across the genus: Gambusia are accomplished colonisers, and no aquarist should ever release them into local waters.

Conservation

Gambusia rhizophorae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 9 January 2014. At the global scale the species is not considered threatened, and its high reproductive resilience and low fishing vulnerability support that ranking. FishBase nonetheless notes that the species is vulnerable because of its highly specific habitat requirements — its dependence on red-mangrove tidal creeks means that local declines track closely with the loss and degradation of mangrove habitat.

That tension between a stable global ranking and genuine local fragility is reflected at the regional level: the Florida population has separately been listed as biologically vulnerable by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a state-level designation distinct from the global IUCN category. The species is not evaluated under CITES or CMS. For a fish with so restricted and disjunct a range, the practical conservation message is straightforward — its future depends on the protection of the mangrove systems it inhabits, and the global Least Concern listing should not be read as freedom from local threat.
