Taxonomy & naming
Girardinichthys ireneae was described by Alfred C. Radda and Manfred K. Meyer in 2003, from material collected at Laguna de Zacapu in Michoacán, Mexico. The holotype is a 1 in male taken by A. C. Radda and S. M. Calderón in February 2001, with paratypes that include two 0.5 in females and a larger pair (a 1 in male and a 1 in female) gathered by Derek Lambert in 1990. The genus Girardinichthys honours the French-American ichthyologist Charles Frédéric Girard, while the epithet ireneae was given in tribute to Irene Radda, wife of the senior author. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — recognises Girardinichthys ireneae Radda & Meyer, 2003.
The species sits within the Goodeidae, the splitfins, in the subfamily Goodeinae of the order Cyprinodontiformes. Its placement, however, is genuinely disputed. The fish was split off from the highland splitfin long known as Hubbsina turneri, and several molecular and morphological studies (Moncayo-Estrada 1993; Doadrio & Domínguez-Domínguez 2004; Ramírez-Herrejón 2010) have been unable to distinguish turneri and ireneae, with some authors arguing that Hubbsina is a valid, single-species genus. The Goodeid Working Group treats ireneae as an evolutionarily significant unit (the Laguna Zacapu / Río Angulo lineage) within that complex.
The upshot is that the same fish travels under more than one name in the literature, and conservation assessments must reconcile a contested species concept. Lyons and colleagues, in their 2019 review of the Mexican Goodeidae, followed Radda & Meyer in treating G. ireneae as a valid species restricted to the upper Angulo drainage, while noting that the closely allied G. turneri of the Cuitzeo–Yuriria region appears to be extinct. Until the taxonomy is resolved, the prudent course is to treat ireneae as a distinct, narrowly endemic conservation unit regardless of the rank it is ultimately assigned.
Morphology
Girardinichthys ireneae is a small splitfin. The maximum known size in the broader highland-splitfin complex is about 2.5 in standard length (Miller et al. 2005), but the type series of ireneae itself is smaller — the holotype male measures only 1 in SL and the largest paratypes about 1 in SL — so adults are typically diminutive fish of a few centimetres.
As in all goodeids, the male carries the family's diagnostic feature: an andropodium rather than a true gonopodium. The first several anal-fin rays (about the first seven) are shortened and slightly crowded, creating a notch that gives the splitfins their English name; this modified region of the fin, not a long projecting tube as in poeciliids, is used in internal insemination. Males also tend to have a somewhat larger dorsal fin than females. Females are plainer and, when carrying young, become noticeably deep-bellied.
Detailed published colour and meristic descriptions for ireneae as distinct from the rest of the turneri complex are sparse, reflecting both the species' rarity and the unresolved taxonomy. Data here are therefore best treated as sparse: the safest summary is a small, drab-to-modestly-marked splitfin in which the surest field characters are the goodeid andropodium of the male and the small, livebearing, deep-bodied build of the gravid female.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Río Angulo drainage of the Río Lerma–Chapala basin, in Michoacán, central Mexico. Its type locality and stronghold is Laguna de Zacapu, a spring-fed highland lake; historically it also occurred in a few nearby spring-fed lakes and was recorded as recently as 2013 from a tiny spring at Jesús María, an affluent of the Canal Patera roughly 22 mi east-northeast of Zacapu, though it is probably now extirpated there. It has disappeared from the smaller lakes it once inhabited and persists mainly in the spring-fed areas of Lake Zacapu.
It is a fish of quiet water — lakes, ponds, canals and ditches with little or no current — over substrates of mud, silt, clay, sand, rock and decaying organic matter. It favours shallow water, generally less than about 4 ft deep, with recorded Zacapu habitat around 2–3 ft. The water ranges from clear to turbid and muddy, and the fish associates closely with dense aquatic vegetation: stands of Chara, Potamogeton, Ceratophyllum, water hyacinth (Eichhornia), Typha and Scirpus, plus filamentous green algae. It shelters under this vegetation, among willow roots and beneath fallen leaves.
This dependence on clear, well-vegetated spring water in a single basin is precisely what makes the species so vulnerable. As springs decline, vegetation is lost, and exotic species spread through the Lerma system, the small refuges that still hold G. ireneae shrink, and the fish's range contracts toward the most stable spring-fed corners of Lake Zacapu.
Feeding
Girardinichthys ireneae appears to be a specialist micro-predator rather than a generalist grazer. In captivity it feeds almost exclusively on small crustaceans — copepods, Daphnia and newly hatched Artemia — together with small bloodworms, and it shows a marked preference for picking small planktonic organisms near the bottom.
Its feeding is also notably crepuscular and nocturnal: the fish is most active at twilight and after dark, when it works through the water just above the substrate taking small live prey. This behaviour, combined with its narrow taste for small planktonic and benthic invertebrates, sets it apart from the more omnivorous, surface-feeding livebearers of the aquarium trade.
For keepers, the practical consequence is that a diet of small, live or frozen invertebrate foods offered toward the end of the day suits the species far better than dry flake delivered in bright light. There is little published detail on the precise wild diet, so the captive observations above are the best available guide and should be treated as the firmer end of otherwise sparse data.
Mating
Like all goodeids, G. ireneae practises internal fertilisation, but by a different mechanism from the more familiar poeciliid livebearers. Poeciliids such as guppies and mollies transfer sperm using a gonopodium — a long, modified, tube-like anal fin. Goodeids instead use an andropodium: the first several anal-fin rays are shortened to form a notched, crowded region (the "splitfin" structure) that delivers sperm to the female without forming an elongated intromittent organ.
A further contrast with poeciliids is that goodeids generally do not store sperm for long periods or rely on superfetation (carrying several broods at different developmental stages at once); each brood follows its own mating, and reproduction is seasonal rather than continuous. In G. ireneae the breeding season runs at least from spring into late summer, with young recorded born roughly between May and August.
Behavioural detail specific to ireneae is sparse, but within the highland-splitfin group males display to females and use the andropodium for insemination, with the larger male dorsal fin likely playing a role in courtship. The combination of seasonal, internally fertilised reproduction and a single, vulnerable population is part of why the species recovers so slowly from disturbance — there is no continuous, sperm-stored output to buffer a bad year.
Breeding
Girardinichthys ireneae is viviparous, and its reproduction is one of the most remarkable in freshwater fishes. Goodeids of the subfamily Goodeinae are matrotrophic: the developing embryos are nourished directly by the mother through trophotaeniae — ribbon- or rosette-like extensions that grow from the embryo's vent and absorb nutrients from inside the ovarian cavity, functioning as a placental analogue. The young are therefore not merely hatched from yolk-rich eggs but actively fed during gestation, and they are born as comparatively large, fully formed fish.
Broods are modest in number but the fry are well developed. In the highland-splitfin complex, large females have been reported carrying on the order of 20–40 young, and a 2.5–3 in female of the nominal Hubbsina turneri contained 71 embryos about 0.5 in long — figures that indicate larger females produce substantially larger broods of sizeable fry. Birth in G. ireneae has been recorded at least from May through August.
For the aquarist, this means breeding is realistic but slow and seasonal compared with poeciliids: relatively few, robust fry born once conditions warm, rather than the near-continuous output of a guppy. Because the species is Critically Endangered and held in only a handful of conservation collections, captive breeding is significant beyond the hobby — it is part of the safety net for a fish that may not survive in the wild.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's livebearer, and it is rarely available outside dedicated goodeid-keeping and conservation circles. Recommended husbandry calls for a tank of at least about 20 US gal, ideally long and wide rather than tall, with moderate current and high oxygenation — dissolved oxygen around 8 mg/l or better — reflecting the cool, spring-fed waters the species comes from. Large, regular water changes (on the order of 60–80% weekly) help maintain the clean, well-oxygenated conditions it needs.
Temperature management is central. The fish should be kept below about 75 °F, and a genuine winter rest is important: a cool period below 68 °F, tolerating temperatures down to around 50 °F, for two to three months, with spawning resuming as the water warms back to about 63–64 °F. This seasonal temperature cycle mimics the highland climate of its native range and appears necessary for long-term health and reproduction. Feed small live and frozen invertebrate foods, preferably toward evening to match the fish's crepuscular habits.
Given its endangered status, the most responsible reason to keep G. ireneae is participation in coordinated captive-maintenance programmes such as those run by the Goodeid Working Group, where stock provenance is tracked and lineages kept pure. Casual mixing of strains or of ireneae with the closely allied turneri-complex fish undermines the conservation value of captive populations.
Conservation
Girardinichthys ireneae is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (species ID 132523146). Lyons and colleagues, in their 2019 review of the Mexican Goodeidae, likewise classed it as Critically Endangered and declining, and under Mexico's national listing (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010) it is categorised as "P" — en peligro de extinción, in danger of extinction. Note that the FishBase mirror still showed the species as "Not Evaluated" in its 2025 version, a lag that reflects the fish's contested taxonomy and the fact that earlier assessments bundled it under Hubbsina turneri; the exact Red List assessment year is not captured in the available sources and is left unstated here rather than guessed.
The drivers of decline are those that afflict the whole Lerma–Chapala goodeid fauna: loss and pollution of spring-fed habitat, declining and diverted spring flows, destruction of the dense aquatic vegetation the fish depends on, and the spread of introduced fishes. The species has already vanished from most of its former range, including the small satellite lakes and the Jesús María spring, and now survives chiefly in the spring-fed parts of Lake Zacapu. Its naturally narrow distribution — a single drainage — leaves it with no buffer against a local catastrophe.
The wider context is bleak: the closely allied highland splitfin Girardinichthys turneri of the Cuitzeo–Yuriria region is considered extinct, with no records since the late 1980s and no captive population, a fate G. ireneae could share. Against that, the Goodeidae are among the best-supported fishes in ex-situ conservation, and dedicated aquarist networks maintaining genetically managed captive lines represent one of the few realistic safeguards for the species while the pressures on its remaining wild habitat continue.
