Taxonomy & naming
Iriatherina werneri was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Hermann Meinken in 1974. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Iriatherina werneri Meinken, 1974; because the species was described in Iriatherina, where it remains the sole species of the genus, no parenthetical authority is used. The specific epithet werneri honours the collector associated with the original material.
Iriatherina is a monotypic genus — this one species and no other — placed in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, within the silverside order Atheriniformes. It sits apart from the deep-bodied rainbowfishes of the genus Melanotaenia: far smaller, more slender, and ornamented with the elongate, filamentous fins that give it both its genus name (from the Greek for 'rainbow') and its common names, threadfin and featherfin. No subspecies are recognised, though populations across its range — northern Australia and southern New Guinea — vary in fin development and colour intensity.
Morphology
Iriatherina werneri is among the smallest rainbowfishes, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length — a little longer with the tail — and slender rather than deep-bodied. The body is translucent silver to olive, often with a reddish or bronze flush, and the large eye carries a coloured ring. The fins are what set it apart; they are the most elaborate in the family.
Males carry the full ornamentation. The first dorsal is a tall, rounded fan that can be erected on demand, while the second dorsal and the anal fin stream rearward into long, dark filaments — the 'threadfins' of the name. The forked caudal is marked with red or orange in the lobes. A displaying male raises the dorsal fan, spreads and quivers the trailing filaments, and deepens his red, and the whole performance makes the tiny fish look far larger than it is. Females and immature males are much plainer, with short rounded fins and none of the filamentous extensions — a sexual dimorphism strong enough that mature males are unmistakable.
Habitat
Iriatherina werneri occurs in northern Australia — across the Northern Territory and Cape York Peninsula in Queensland — and in southern New Guinea, giving it a distribution that spans the shallow Arafura–Torres Strait region that periodically joined the two landmasses. It inhabits still and slow-flowing waters: vegetated margins of lagoons, billabongs, swamps, drains, and the quiet edges of slow streams, almost always among dense aquatic plants.
Across much of its range it is tied to vegetation and to clear, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, though it tolerates a fair spread of conditions. The water is warm and tropical; the habitats are shallow, weedy, and sheltered rather than open or fast-flowing. This is a fish of the plant thicket — it shelters, feeds, and spawns among fine-leaved vegetation, and that reliance on weedy, still-water margins shapes both its distribution and its needs in captivity.
Feeding
The threadfin rainbowfish is a small-mouthed micro-predator and omnivore that feeds in the upper and middle water column on tiny prey. In the wild it takes small zooplankton, insect larvae, and other minute invertebrates, along with some algae and plant matter, picked delicately from open water and from among vegetation.
In captivity the small mouth is the whole problem: foods must be tiny. It accepts finely powdered or crushed flake and the smallest micro-pellets, but does conspicuously better on small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, Cyclops, rotifers, micro-worms. A varied diet of small live or frozen items brings males into full colour and fin condition and readies them to spawn. On dry food alone they stay pale and tend to lose the race for food against faster tankmates. Frequent small feedings suit this slow, deliberate feeder better than large infrequent meals.
Mating
Iriatherina werneri is an egg-scattering plant-spawner, and the courtship runs on the male's exaggerated fins. Under good conditions it spawns continuously, dropping a few eggs daily rather than in single clutches. The male's display is both the behaviour worth watching and the reason to keep the fish: he erects his dorsal fan, streams his filaments, flushes red, and dances alongside a female or a sparring rival, the whole effect inflating his apparent size.
Display and spawning peak in the morning. Competition sharpens it, so the fish are most colourful and active in a group with several males. A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation, where the pair release a few eggs that attach by fine threads to the plants. Since the courtship depends on intact fins, males in poor condition or with damaged filaments display less effectively — one reason to keep the species in conditions that let males grow and hold their fins.
Breeding
The threadfin can be bred at home, but it asks more than the larger, hardier rainbowfishes — a small, delicate fish with tiny eggs and even tinier fry. Conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over spawning mops, attaching small adhesive eggs by fine filaments, a few at a time over many days.
Eggs hatch after roughly one to two weeks depending on temperature. The fry are the hard part: exceptionally small, with tiny mouths even by rainbowfish standards, they need the finest first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — for a while before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults eat both eggs and fry, so breeders move mops or eggs to a separate, well-matured rearing container with established microfauna. Growth is slow, and the fans and filaments come in gradually as males approach maturity. With the small adult size, short life, and fussy fry, the most reliable route is a self-renewing colony in a dedicated, densely planted, stable tank.
In the aquarium
Iriatherina werneri is a peaceful, delicate schooling nano fish, and it has to be kept in a group — at least six to eight, ideally more, with several males so the display is on show. It is small, slow-moving, and easily cowed, which makes tankmate choice the decision that makes or breaks it. Never house it with boisterous, fast-feeding, or fin-nipping fish: they will beat it to the food and shred the very filaments that make it worth keeping. Suitable company is tiny and gentle — small rasboras, pygmy Corydoras, other small rainbowfishes and blue-eyes, small peaceful catfish. Almost anything large or pushy is not.
A densely planted tank with fine-leaved plants, gentle filtration, and calm water suits it best, giving both the cover it relies on and the still conditions its trailing fins prefer. Keep the water warm, clean, and soft-to-neutral, and value steady conditions over precise numbers — the fish is sensitive to poor quality and to abrupt change. Feed deliberately and small, and don't make it compete. It lives only a couple of years and bruises easily, so it rewards an attentive keeper and a quiet, mature, well-planted aquarium over a busy community tank. Get the setting right and a school of displaying males is one of the finest sights the rainbowfishes offer.
Conservation
Iriatherina werneri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. It is widely distributed across suitable still-water and weedy habitats in northern Australia and southern New Guinea, and over that broad range it is not currently at risk of extinction; no range-wide threat has pushed it toward a threatened category.
The concerns are local and habitat-based rather than global. As a fish of vegetated still-water margins, it suffers where those margins are degraded — by changes in water regime, by loss of aquatic vegetation, and, in parts of northern Australia, by introduced species and altered wetlands. Strip the weedy cover from its lagoons and billabongs and the fish goes with it. Collection for the trade is a minor pressure: enthusiasts breed it, and tank-bred stock is available, which eases the draw on wild fish. As with the other small Australasian rainbowfishes, the most useful thing an aquarist can do is buy captive-bred stock and back the wetland habitats the wild populations depend on.
