Kiunga ballochi is a tiny, almost transparent rainbowfish from a handful of clear rainforest creeks in the Upper Fly River system of Papua New Guinea. It barely reaches 1 in. In males the glassy body is offset by boldly black-bordered, yellow-marked fins — a fish elusive enough that it was feared lost for nearly two decades before turning up again in 2007. The IUCN lists it as Endangered: its range is small, confined to the Upper Fly, and now known from only four scattered subpopulations in creeks crossed by roads tied to the Ok Tedi mine.

Taxonomy & naming

Kiunga ballochi was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1983, in the article "Kiunga ballochi, a new genus and species of rainbowfish (Melanotaeniidae) from Papua New Guinea," published in Tropical Fish Hobbyist 32(2): 72–77. Allen erected the new genus Kiunga to receive it, naming the genus after the village of Kiunga near the type locality in the Fly River system. The type material was collected by Allen and John Parke in September 1982. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Kiunga ballochi Allen, 1983; because it has remained in the genus in which it was described, no parenthetical authority is used.

Though originally described within the rainbowfish family Melanotaeniidae, Kiunga now sits in the family Pseudomugilidae, the blue-eyes — a closely allied group within the order Atheriniformes. Only one other species, Kiunga bleheri, shares the genus. Allen separated Kiunga from the other New Guinea rainbowfishes mainly on its small size, transparent body, and fin pattern.

The specific epithet ballochi honours Dr David Balloch, an Australian biologist who served as staff biologist at the Ok Tedi mine and who collected the species. The common name "Glass blue-eye" refers both to the fish's near-transparent body and to its placement among the blue-eyes; it is also called Balloch's blue-eye after the same dedicatee.

Morphology

Kiunga ballochi is one of the smallest of the rainbowfish allies, reaching a maximum of about 1 in standard length. The body is mainly transparent — a true "glass" fish — with a silvery stomach region and silvery opercula being the most opaque parts. The individual scales are thinly outlined with fine, pepper-like melanophores, giving the body a delicate stippled appearance when viewed closely.

Darker pigment is concentrated along the midlateral line, the ventral edge of the caudal peduncle, and the bases of the fins, where dense melanophores draw distinct lines against the otherwise clear body. The dorsal spines are a translucent yellow. The male's unpaired fins do the rest of the work: the second dorsal, caudal, and anal fins carry bold black borders set off by yellow submarginal bands, so the fins read as yellow with dark margins against the glassy body.

Recorded meristics run to 2–3 dorsal spines and 13–16 soft rays in the second dorsal fin, with 1 anal spine and 15–17 anal soft rays. As in the small blue-eyes and rainbowfishes generally, the dorsal fin is split in two. The differences in colour and finnage between the sexes are clearest in adult males in display.

Habitat

Kiunga ballochi is endemic to Papua New Guinea, where it is restricted to the Upper Fly River system. The type specimens were collected in 1982 from small tributaries of the Ok Smak — a major tributary of the Ok Tedi — roughly 25–31 mi north of the town of Kiunga, where these streams cross the Tabubil–Kiunga road just north of the Ok Mart Bridge near Rumginae. The catchment lies close to the border with the Indonesian province of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), at roughly 6–7 degrees south latitude.

The fish lives in narrow, clear creeks running through lowland rainforest on generally flat terrain. FishBase treats it as a freshwater, demersal species of tropical waters. The recorded water is warm, about 75–79 °F, with a pH around 7.5 or higher — small, shaded, slow creeks of the kind easily upset by any disturbance to their narrow catchment.

Surveys between 2007 and 2018 failed to relocate the fish at the type locality, which is under increasing pressure from settlement, but recorded it from a tributary closer to Kiunga and from additional subpopulations: tributaries of the Ok Birim west of the Ok Tedi main channel near the Indonesian border (2014), creeks crossed by a new Kiunga–Drimkas road (2018), and a tributary of the Elevala River east of the Fly (2018) — the last of these pushing the known range well beyond its earlier limits. Even so, the IUCN recognises only four locations. It remains a narrow-range endemic, dependent on the health of these few small rainforest creeks.

Feeding

Allen did not record a natural diet in the original description, and direct dietary observations for the species are still sparse. Its trophic level is estimated at around 3.2 — in line with a small invertebrate-feeder rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore.

By analogy with its congener and with the small blue-eyes and rainbowfishes generally, it is best read as an omnivore taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, with some algae and plant matter. In a narrow rainforest creek that means tiny insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and the terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface — food picked from the water column and the surface film.

A small fish with a small mouth needs its diet scaled to match: micro-foods, not the larger prey a full-sized rainbowfish will take. None of this is measured directly for the species; it is inferred from the genus and family, and should be read that way.

Mating

Courtship observations specific to Kiunga ballochi are thin; most of what is described comes from the genus and from the broader rainbowfish and blue-eye pattern set out by Adrian Tappin. In these fishes a pair forms a temporary spawning association rather than a lasting bond, with the male displaying to the female near a chosen spawning site.

The spawning act itself, as described for the genus, has the pair quivering side by side near a chosen point in the vegetation, releasing eggs and sperm together before splitting apart. The eggs are scattered into the surrounding plants, not tended at a fixed nest, and there is no parental care.

As in related small rainbowfishes, display and spawning probably peak in the brighter early part of the day, the males at their most colourful when competing. The wild behaviour of this species has not been studied closely, so take these as the genus pattern applied to it rather than direct field observation.

Breeding

Breeding details for Kiunga ballochi, as compiled in the Australian government's live-import assessment, follow the account given by Adrian Tappin for the genus and for rainbowfishes generally. Pairs spawn by quivering side by side, with simultaneous release of eggs and sperm, after which they separate and scatter the fertilised eggs into surrounding vegetation.

The eggs bear sticky adhesive filaments that catch and hang them among fine-leaved plants. Incubation runs roughly 5 to 11 days, after which the eggs hatch into well-formed larvae carrying only a very small yolk sac. That meagre yolk reserve means the fry must start on very small foods almost at once — which is what makes rearing such micro-fish hard work.

It is an egg-scattering, plant-spawning mode with no parental care — the standard strategy of the small blue-eyes and rainbowfishes. As with the mating account, these specifics are extrapolated from Tappin's genus-level work rather than a dedicated breeding study, and direct captive-breeding reports for the species are sparse.

In the aquarium

Kiunga ballochi is rare in the hobby and has never been a regular import — a function of its pinpoint range, its very small size, and a glass-bodied look that does not sell itself across a shop tank. Adrian Tappin's care page at Home of the Rainbowfish (ANGFA Queensland) is the main hobby reference.

Treat it as a delicate nano blue-eye. It wants a quiet, well-planted tank with gentle filtration and stable warm water in the mid-20s Celsius, near neutral to mildly alkaline; it is a peaceful shoaler that should be kept in a group. The tiny mouth and retiring manner rule out larger or boisterous tankmates, which will out-eat and bully it — a single-species set-up, or a tank of equally tiny, calm companions, works best.

A male's transparent body and yellow-and-black finnage show best over a dark substrate, against fine-leaved planting, under subdued light. With so little published on this species specifically, anyone keeping it is really just extending the husbandry of the small blue-eyes; firsthand, species-specific experience is still thin on the ground.

Conservation

Kiunga ballochi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered (EN), under criterion B1ab(iii); the assessment was carried out on 6 December 2019 and published in 2020 (IUCN species ID 11021). The listing reflects its restricted range — an estimated extent of occurrence under about 5,0 mi² across four locations in the Upper Fly system — together with a continuing decline in the quality of its creek habitat driven by settlement and road building associated with the Ok Tedi mine.

Its history is one of apparent loss and rediscovery. The fish was reported moderately common when first collected in 1982, but searches at the type locality in 1994–1995 came up empty, and it was listed as Critically Endangered in 1996 and again in 2009 amid fears it had vanished. A few were found again in 2007, and the further subpopulations documented through 2014–2018 supported the 2019 reassessment down to Endangered.

The pressures are the familiar ones for a narrow-range endemic in a working mining and road corridor. Any harm to its few small creeks — sedimentation, pollution, a change to the catchment — lands on essentially the whole global population at once. There is no large outlying refuge to absorb a local decline, and the hobby presence is far too small to serve as a captive backstop. The fish's future comes down to the state of a very small patch of Papua New Guinea rainforest.
