Among the most widely distributed of the Australian rainbowfishes, the Western rainbowfish turns up in rivers, creeks, swamps, and lagoons across north-western Australia — from the arid Pilbara to the monsoonal Kimberley and the western fringe of the Northern Territory. It is small, hardy, and intensely variable: colour and pattern shift markedly from one population to the next. In the aquarium it is a peaceful, beginner-friendly shoaler. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia australis was described by the French naturalist François de Laporte, Comte de Castelnau, in 1875, from material collected in Western Australia. Because the species was originally placed in a different genus and later moved to Melanotaenia, the authority is cited in parentheses: (Castelnau, 1875). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name. The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes, classified within the order Atheriniformes — and radiates across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia.

The taxonomy of the Australian rainbowfishes has been revised repeatedly, and M. australis long served as a catch-all for several north-western forms. The Northern rainbowfish, Melanotaenia solata, was once identified as M. australis until molecular work showed the two to be distinct, with non-overlapping ranges. Spread across a vast and fragmented region, its populations diverge strongly in form and colour — the group is a stock example of rapid speciation and unsettled taxonomy within the genus.

The genus name combines the Greek melan (black or dark) with the Latin taenia (a band or stripe), referring to the dark lateral stripe shown by many species in the genus. The specific epithet australis is Latin for 'southern', reflecting the species' Australian distribution.

Morphology

Melanotaenia australis is a small, fusiform-to-moderately-deep-bodied rainbowfish reaching about 4.5 in standard length, with a common adult size nearer 3 in SL; hobby sources sometimes cite total lengths up to around 4.5 in. Like other members of the genus it carries the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — and a single anal spine with a long-based anal fin. Reported meristics include 7–12 dorsal soft rays and 16–21 anal soft rays.

Colour is the species' most distinctive feature, and its most variable. Typical fish carry one or two broad dark mid-lateral stripes overlaid with thin orange-red lines running along the scale rows, set against an iridescent purple-to-blue body sheen. The second dorsal and anal fins are often reddish-orange with a yellow membrane and a dark distal border. How much colour a fish shows depends heavily on where it comes from — a consequence of the populations' divergence across the enormous range — and intensifies with display, condition, and diet.

The species is sexually dimorphic. Males grow larger and deeper-bodied, become brighter, and develop elongated dorsal and anal fins; females are paler, more rounded in the fins, and typically lack the strong dark mid-lateral band and the lower zigzag striping seen in displaying males.

Habitat

Melanotaenia australis is widespread across north-western Australia. Its range runs through the Pilbara region of Western Australia between the Ashburton and De Grey Rivers, north through the Kimberley between the Fitzroy River and the Northern Territory border, and into the north-western sector of the Timor Sea drainage of the Northern Territory as far east as roughly the Adelaide and Daly River systems near Darwin.

The species turns up across an unusually broad range of freshwater habitats — rivers, creeks, swamps, marshy lagoons, lakes, and reservoirs. It gathers near the surface of rocky pools, or along stream margins among plant cover and submerged logs and branches. That flexibility is one reason it ranges so widely and holds up so well in a region of strongly seasonal climate.

Much of the range swings hard between wet and dry seasons, so the fish weathers large natural shifts in temperature, pH, and hardness over the year. FishBase treats it as a tropical freshwater species; reported conditions run to temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F and a pH of about 6.5–8.0, matching its occurrence in everything from soft upland creeks to harder lowland and arid-zone waters.

Feeding

Like rainbowfishes generally, the Western rainbowfish is an opportunistic omnivore feeding in the upper and middle water column, with a reported trophic level around 2.9. In the wild it takes small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects from the surface — along with algae and plant material.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and takes dried, frozen, and live foods alike. A varied diet — good-quality flake and small pellets backed up with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and the like — keeps colour and condition up. As an active, near-constant grazer it does best on small amounts several times a day rather than one large feeding, and a real live or frozen component improves both colour and breeding readiness.

Mating

Melanotaenia australis is an egg-depositing, plant-spawning species that forms distinct pairs during spawning, with no parental care. Under good conditions it is a continuous or near-continuous spawner rather than a strictly seasonal one. As in other rainbowfishes, males display most intensely in the presence of rivals and receptive females, flaring fins and flushing colour to maximum saturation, and the species shows its best colour when several males are kept together.

Courtship and spawning peak in the early morning, just after first light. A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation, where the pair release a few eggs at a time. Since display is competitive and group-driven, breeders condition groups — several females per male — rather than isolated pairs to bring fish into peak form.

Breeding

The Western rainbowfish is a straightforward egg depositor and a good subject for beginner breeders. Conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops, attaching small, durable, adhesive eggs to the spawning medium. Spawning typically occurs over an extended period — days to weeks — with a female releasing a few eggs daily rather than a single large clutch.

The eggs are fairly tough and, depending on temperature, hatch after roughly 8 to 11 days — warmer water shortens the wait. Adults eat their own eggs, so breeders keep the fish very well fed, siphon the eggs out, or use spawning mops that can be lifted to a separate rearing container. The tiny fry hang near the surface at first and need very small first foods such as infusoria before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake. Growth is slow, and the adult colours — which vary by population — come in gradually as the fish mature.

In the aquarium

Melanotaenia australis is a peaceful, hardy, sociable shoaler that suits beginner and intermediate aquarists. Keep it in a group of six or more, ideally with several females per male so the males display at one another and stay coloured up. It works the middle and upper levels of the tank, a restless swimmer that wants open room.

Water chemistry can be loose, reflecting the wide natural range and the fish's tolerance of strong seasonal swings: it does well across roughly pH 6.0–8.0, a hardness of about 5–20 dGH, and temperatures of 72–82 °F (about 72–82 °F). Stable conditions and good filtration count for more than precise numbers. A planted tank with open central swimming room, some surface movement, and bright lighting shows the colours off best.

Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and not so timid as to be outcompeted at feeding — other rainbowfishes, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, and rasboras are natural companions. The species is hardy and reasonably long-lived, with a reported lifespan of up to about five years.

Conservation

Melanotaenia australis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, the assessment dated 14 February 2019. The listing reflects the species' very wide distribution across north-western Australia, its broad habitat tolerance, and the absence of any major range-wide threat. FishBase rates its resilience as medium, with a population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years.

The species is of minor commercial interest in both food and ornamental fisheries and is harmless to humans. Its abundance and adaptability — it occupies rivers, creeks, swamps, lagoons, lakes, and reservoirs alike — buffer it against localised disturbance, unlike the narrowly endemic, threatened rainbowfishes of New Guinea's isolated lake systems. As with many widespread Australian freshwater fishes, the long-term worries for individual populations are localised habitat alteration, water extraction, and introduced species — none of which threatens the species as a whole today.
