Melanotaenia batanta was described by Gerald R. Allen and Samuel Renyaan in 1998, in a paper titled 'Three new species of rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae) from Irian Jaya, Indonesia', published in the journal aqua, Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology (volume 3, part 2, pages 69–80). The type locality is Warmon Stream (Warmon Creek) on the north-eastern end of Batanta Island, one of the four large islands of the Raja Ampat group off the western (Vogelkop) end of New Guinea, in what is now the Indonesian province of West Papua. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia batanta Allen & Renyaan, 1998; because the species was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, the authority is cited without parentheses.
Melanotaenia is the largest genus in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which have radiated across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. M. batanta is one of many narrowly distributed West Papuan members of the genus. Like most of its relatives, it is more readily told apart by locality and live colour than by hard meristic characters, which overlap broadly from species to species. Reported fin counts fall within the normal Melanotaenia range: roughly five to seven dorsal spines, thirteen to sixteen dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine, and twenty-six to thirty anal soft rays.
Morphology
Melanotaenia batanta is a small rainbowfish, recorded to about 3.5 in standard length — the largest of the type series, the holotype, measured 3.5 in SL in the original description — though the fish most aquarists and collectors encounter are smaller. It shows the laterally compressed, moderately deep body and the characteristic divided dorsal fin of the genus — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — with body depth increasing in older, dominant males as in other Melanotaenia.
Colour information for this species is thin in the primary literature; the published descriptions dwell on meristics and restricted distribution more than on a live colour account. As in rainbowfishes generally, mature males should be the more colourful and deeper-bodied sex, their hues intensifying during display and fading under stress, while females and juveniles stay plainer. With firm sourced detail on the colour pattern limited, this profile errs toward saying less rather than guessing at markings the species may not show.
Habitat
Melanotaenia batanta is known only from Batanta Island in the Raja Ampat archipelago, West Papua, Indonesia — a small, mountainous, forest-covered island. According to FishBase, it inhabits clear, moderately fast-flowing streams, a flowing-water habitat that contrasts with the still lake systems occupied by some of its better-known relatives such as the Ayamaru-Lakes endemics.
Island stream habitat like this is typically warm and well oxygenated, with fairly clean water draining forested catchments. General rainbowfish husbandry should apply: an active, peaceful schooling fish that does best in a group, in a tank with open swimming space and good water movement and filtration. Given the clear, fast-flowing stream origins, well-oxygenated water with some current is a sensible starting point. Husbandry references for the genus suggest temperatures around 75–88 °F and pH near 6.0–7.8, with rainbowfish keepers commonly settling around 77–82 °F and near-neutral pH — genus-level guidelines, not parameters validated for batanta. With dedicated care information this thin, treat the fish as a typical stream-dwelling rainbowfish and put stable, clean, oxygen-rich water first.
Conservation
Melanotaenia batanta is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, in an assessment dated 3 December 2019. The D2 criterion applies to species with a very restricted range or very few locations that are vulnerable to a plausible future threat — a classification that fits a single-island endemic directly. The species is known only from Batanta Island, so a single damaging event affecting its few streams could threaten the whole population at once.
The conservation issue, then, is the narrowness of the range rather than any documented mass exploitation. A species confined to one small island's streams has little buffer: no large outlying population stands ready to absorb local declines from habitat disturbance, deforestation of the catchment, or introduced fishes. As with other West Papuan rainbowfishes, the soundest thing an aquarist can do is favour captive-bred stock over wild-caught fish where any turn up, and avoid adding to collecting pressure on a population that is fragile by its geography alone.
