Taxonomy & naming
The Dutch ichthyologist Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort described Melanotaenia catherinae in 1910. He first placed it in a different genus; the later move to Melanotaenia is why the authority is cited in parentheses as (de Beaufort, 1910). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name and treats M. catherinae as valid within the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes of New Guinea and Australia.
The genus name pairs the Greek melan, black, with the Latin taenia, a stripe or band — a nod to the dark lateral band many of these fishes carry. The epithet catherinae is a patronym, for Catherine de Beaufort, the describing author's wife. Where the species sits among the other West Papuan rainbowfishes is not worked out in any literature easy to find, so this account claims nothing beyond the family and genus the Catalog of Fishes records.
Most of what documentation exists rests on Gerald R. Allen's 1991 Field Guide to the Freshwater Fishes of New Guinea, FishBase's principal reference. Beyond that survey and field-guide work, dedicated taxonomic or ecological study of M. catherinae is thin — a measure of how seldom its remote island has been sampled.
Morphology
This is a small rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum of about 3 in SL in males and unsexed specimens, with females to roughly 2.5 in SL — modest even for the genus. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the usual Melanotaenia mould, with the family's divided dorsal fin: a short anterior dorsal set off from a longer posterior one.
Recorded meristics give 6 to 7 dorsal spines and 11 to 13 dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine, and 19 to 21 anal soft rays. These counts sit comfortably within the genus, and they serve a taxonomist better than an aquarist squinting at a tank, because rainbowfish meristics overlap broadly between species.
Live colour descriptions for this species are scarce, so I won't assert a particular breeding pattern. As in rainbowfishes generally, displaying males run brighter than females and juveniles and deepen in the body with age. The exact hues and markings of wild M. catherinae are not documented here, and better left undescribed than guessed at.
Habitat
M. catherinae is endemic to Waigeo, a large island about 40 mi northwest of the West Papuan mainland in the Raja Ampat region of Indonesia. The records put it on this one island and nowhere else — another of the genus's narrow island endemics. FishBase places it between the equator and about 1 degree south, a near-equatorial, tropical setting.
It is a stream fish: freshwater, benthopelagic, at home in flowing island waters rather than large lakes. Waigeo is rugged and forested, and its freshwater is the clear, shaded streams draining the interior. The sources carry no measurements of water chemistry, depth, or seasonal regime, so those figures stand here as data sparse.
The single-island distribution is the central fact of the biology. A fish confined to the streams of one island has nowhere else to go, which makes any future change to those waters matter out of proportion to its size — even though nothing presently flags it as threatened.
Feeding
No diet study exists for M. catherinae, but its feeding can be sketched from the genus and its recorded trophic level. FishBase gives an estimate of about 2.9 — an omnivore working a mix of small invertebrate prey and plant or algal matter.
In a stream it would feed through the water column and at the surface on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates: insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, insects dropped onto the water, rounded out with algae and fine plant matter grazed off submerged surfaces. That generalist, opportunistic habit is the rainbowfish rule, and it suits life in small, productive streams.
With no direct observations on hand, this is inferred from the genus, not recorded for the species — take it as such. In a tank, the undemanding omnivory typical of Melanotaenia should apply.
Mating
No one has documented the courtship of M. catherinae in any detail I can find, so what follows comes from the genus's well-worn pattern rather than from watching this fish. Rainbowfishes are egg-scattering plant spawners that pair off during courtship and give no parental care.
A male holds a small display area in the vegetation and courts females by flaring his fins and pushing up his colour. In many species a pale courtship band flickers along the head and nape of a displaying male, brightest in the morning. A receptive female follows him into fine-leaved plants, and the pair release a few eggs at a time.
Whether M. catherinae follows the template in every detail isn't on record. Read it as the expected genus-level behaviour, to be confirmed by observation rather than taken on faith.
Breeding
No breeding account specific to M. catherinae turns up in the accessible literature, so this describes the general rainbowfish mode rather than verified facts for the species. Given good conditions, Melanotaenia spawn continuously or close to it, laying small adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants — or, in a tank, from synthetic spawning mops.
A female sheds a few eggs a day over a long stretch rather than one large clutch. They hatch in roughly one to two weeks, sooner in warmer water. Adults give no care and will eat the eggs, so a breeder pulls them to a separate rearing container. The newly hatched fry are tiny and need correspondingly tiny first foods before they can take anything larger.
M. catherinae is rarely kept and its captive spawning essentially undocumented in these sources, so clutch size, incubation, and fry development for this fish stand as data sparse. The above is the genus-level expectation, not a species record.
In the aquarium
You almost never see M. catherinae in the hobby. A remote single-island endemic from Waigeo, it has not reached the trade or hobby literature the way popular rainbowfishes like M. boesemani have, and I found no dedicated care or locality page for it. Keep one and you are working from genus husbandry, not species-specific advice.
General Melanotaenia care points to an active, peaceful schooler best kept in a group, in a tank with open swimming room and some planted cover. The genus does well in neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water in the mid-20s Celsius, where stable conditions and good filtration count for more than precise numbers, and it eats a varied omnivore diet of flake, small pellets, and frozen or live foods. Fair starting points — but inferred from the genus, not confirmed for the Waigeo streams this fish actually lives in.
The honest position is that its aquarium needs are poorly documented. Treat the guidance above as a cautious default, not a tested regime for this particular fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses M. catherinae as Least Concern (LC). The assessment, listed via FishBase under taxon ID 13059, was dated 3 December 2019. The single-island range and all, the current evaluation does not flag it as threatened.
Still, a fish penned into the streams of one island carries a built-in vulnerability: its whole global range is small and indivisible, with no outlying populations to absorb local change. Part of why it remains secure is that Waigeo's forested interior is still relatively undisturbed; any future damage to its streams — deforestation, water extraction, introduced fishes — would land hard on a narrow endemic. FishBase rates its resilience as medium and its vulnerability to fishing as low.
With little dedicated monitoring of so remote a fish, the Least Concern listing reflects an absence of identified threats more than a depth of population data. Protecting Waigeo's freshwater is the surest safeguard for a species that looks stable for now but exists nowhere else on Earth.
