The Murray River rainbowfish is the rainbowfish of the temperate south — the most southerly-ranging member of a family otherwise centred on tropical New Guinea and northern Australia. A modest silvery-green fish of the lowland Murray-Darling, it is the one Melanotaenia that has learned to endure cold: it persists where winter water can fall toward 50 °F, a threshold that would kill most of its relatives. Globally it is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, but in the southern state of Victoria, cold-water dam releases and an introduced mosquitofish have driven sharp local declines.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia fluviatilis was described by the French naturalist François de Castelnau in 1878 from Australian fresh waters. For much of the twentieth century its status was unsettled: it was frequently treated as a subspecies of the eastern rainbowfish, Melanotaenia splendida fluviatilis (Castelnau), and confused with the closely related crimson-spotted or Duboulay's rainbowfish, Melanotaenia duboulayi. Its modern standing as a distinct species was clarified by Crowley, Ivantsoff and Allen (1986), who examined the taxonomic position of the Murray-Darling populations relative to M. duboulayi in the Australian Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name and records it as Melanotaenia fluviatilis (Castelnau, 1878); the parentheses indicate that the species was originally placed in a different genus.

The genus name Melanotaenia combines the Greek melan, 'black', with the Latin taenia, 'stripe' or 'band', a reference to the dark lateral stripe shown by many species in the genus. The specific epithet fluviatilis is Latin for 'of, or belonging to, a river' — an apt name for a fish whose distribution is tied to the rivers and connected wetlands of the Murray-Darling basin.

The species sits within the family Melanotaeniidae, the rainbowfishes and blue-eyes, in the order Atheriniformes. Melanotaenia is the largest genus in the family, radiating across New Guinea and Australia. What sets M. fluviatilis apart is geography rather than any unusual morphology: it is the family's southernmost outpost, the only member adapted to a genuinely temperate climate.

Morphology

The Murray River rainbowfish is a small, laterally compressed rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 4.5 in in males and unsexed fish and around 3 in in females, with a common length near 3.5 in; most fish encountered in the wild are considerably smaller, and Victorian assessment material describes everyday adults of roughly 1–1.5 in — figures that reflect different measurement conventions and the small size at which this species matures.

Colouration is variable and comparatively subdued for a rainbowfish. Adults are silvery-green along the upper sides and back, grading to whitish below, with the scales often edged by a narrow brownish margin that produces a faint reticulated pattern; juveniles are translucent. Like all rainbowfishes it carries the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — and a deepish body that becomes more pronounced in mature males.

Mature males run slightly larger than females and develop elongated dorsal and anal fin rays; in breeding condition they sharpen their colour and contrast during display. Females stay plainer. Colour intensity here, as in rainbowfishes generally, is strongly mood- and condition-dependent — a displaying male in good water looks markedly brighter than a stressed or subordinate fish.

Habitat

Melanotaenia fluviatilis is endemic to Australia, where it occupies the lowland reaches of the Murray River and its tributaries within the Murray-Darling system. In Victoria it is associated with the Loddon, Campaspe, Goulburn and Broken Rivers, together with their connected wetlands and billabongs. It is a fish of rivers, creeks, drainage channels, overflow ponds and reservoirs — typically still or slow-flowing water rather than swift current.

Within these waters the species is highly mobile and schools readily. It congregates along grassy banks and around submerged logs and branches, and is often seen just below the surface or among aquatic vegetation and timber debris near the margins. It tolerates both clear and turbid water. FishBase characterises the habitat as benthopelagic fresh water with pH around 7.0 or above and moderate hardness, in the warm part of the year reaching roughly 72–77 °F.

Ecologically, the species is set apart by its tolerance of cold. As the most southward-ranging rainbowfish, it is the only member of the genus adapted to low winter temperatures, normally around 50–59 °F. That adaptation has a hard floor: numbers fall drastically when water drops below about 50 °F during winter drought, and this poor tolerance of cold water is the thread running through its conservation problems.

Feeding

The Murray River rainbowfish is an omnivore, placed by FishBase at a trophic level near 2.9. In the wild it feeds in the upper and middle water column on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and surface-taken insects — supplemented by algae and plant material. Its habit of foraging just below the surface and among marginal vegetation reflects this opportunistic, mixed diet.

In captivity it is undemanding and accepts the standard rainbowfish fare: good-quality flake and small pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, and some vegetable matter. As an active, more or less continuous grazer it does best on small amounts offered several times a day, and a varied diet with a live or frozen component supports both colour and breeding condition.

Mating

Reproduction in M. fluviatilis follows the rainbowfish pattern of distinct pairing and plant-spawning, with no parental care. Breeding is seasonal in the wild — unusually so for the genus — taking place in spring and summer when water temperatures rise above about 68 °F, the warmth being the trigger that brings fish into spawning condition. This seasonality is a direct consequence of the temperate range: unlike tropical rainbowfishes that can spawn year-round, the Murray River species is constrained to the warm months.

During the breeding season males display to females with heightened colour and the family's characteristic fin-flaring, and a receptive female follows a male into fine-leaved aquatic vegetation to spawn. The species is a batch spawner: a female may release eggs three or four times a day over many days, depositing only 5–20 eggs per batch, for a seasonal total reported in the range of roughly 35 to over 300 eggs.

Breeding

Spawning takes place over submerged plants, where the eggs sink and lodge on aquatic vegetation. The eggs hatch after about a week, releasing tiny larvae under 0.5 in in length. Growth is gradual, and individuals reach maturity at around twelve months of age; FishBase notes maturity can begin from a length as small as about 1 in. Generation length is short — estimated at roughly two years on the basis of the related M. duboulayi, with FishBase giving a figure nearer 3.4 years.

For aquarists, the species breeds along familiar rainbowfish lines: conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, depositing small adhesive eggs a few at a time over an extended period. As with its relatives, the adults take no part in rearing and will eat eggs and fry, so breeders typically transfer the spawning medium to a separate rearing container. The very small first-feeding larvae need correspondingly small foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp.

A practical distinction from the tropical rainbowfishes is temperature: this species is happy to spawn at cooler temperatures than most of the genus, and because it tolerates temperate conditions it is well suited to outdoor pond culture in climates with mild summers.

In the aquarium

Melanotaenia fluviatilis is an active, peaceful, schooling fish that is best kept in a group, where males display against one another and stay in better colour. It is a strong swimmer that appreciates a tank with open swimming space, some surface movement and planted margins; bright lighting and a varied diet bring out what colour it has. It is hardy and harmless, and undemanding about water chemistry, doing well in neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water.

Its defining husbandry trait is its temperate tolerance. Where most rainbowfishes are kept warm year-round, the Murray River rainbowfish is comfortable at cooler temperatures and can experience a genuine seasonal cooling, which more closely mimics its natural cycle and can help cue spring breeding. This same trait makes it one of the few rainbowfishes suited to unheated indoor tanks or to outdoor ponds in temperate climates, provided winter water does not fall toward the lethal 50 °F threshold.

Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful — other rainbowfishes, native Australian fishes, larger tetras, peaceful barbs and rasboras all suit. A school of active mid-water swimmers shows the species at its best, and skewing the group toward males keeps display behaviour and colour at their highest.

Conservation

On the IUCN Red List, Melanotaenia fluviatilis is assessed globally as Least Concern, reflecting its broad distribution across the Murray-Darling basin and its presence in a range of waters from rivers to reservoirs. At the national scale the species is not considered globally threatened, and its resilience is rated medium.

The regional picture is sharply different. In the state of Victoria the species has declined enough to appear on the 2013 advisory list of threatened vertebrate fauna as Vulnerable, has been proposed for an Endangered listing under IUCN Criterion B2ab, and is listed as threatened under Victoria's Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. Its Victorian area of occupancy is estimated at only around 279 mi² across roughly four locations.

The drivers of these declines are well documented. The species' poor tolerance of cold water makes it acutely vulnerable to 'cold-water pollution' — the release of chilled bottom water from large impoundments, which has caused major declines in the Goulburn and Campaspe Rivers. Predation and harassment by the introduced eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), loss of aquatic vegetation, and the broader effects of climate change compound the pressure. Secure across the basin, precarious at its southern edge — M. fluviatilis is a fish that is common across its range and yet locally imperilled where that range runs cold.
