Melanotaenia garylangei is a small, vividly marked rainbowfish from the rainforest creeks of southern New Guinea, described only in 2015 from the Brazza River in the Eilanden system of Indonesian West Papua. Mature males carry a blue nape, an olive-green back, a dark midlateral stripe flanked by red lines, and red-flushed fins. That colour, paired with a naturally tiny range, made the species both a hobbyist prize and an IUCN-listed Vulnerable fish almost from the moment it became known to science.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia garylangei was described in 2015 by Jonas A. Graf, Fabian Herder, and Renny K. Hadiaty in the journal Fishes of Sahul, the publication of the Australia New Guinea Fishes Association. The type material was collected in August 2010 from several small rainforest streams crossing a recently cut road in the Brazza River drainage, part of the larger Eilanden River system in the southern lowlands of New Guinea, in the Indonesian province of Papua (the type series comes from the vicinity of Dekai, on the Brazza River). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia garylangei Graf, Herder & Hadiaty, 2015; because the species was originally described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, the authority carries no parentheses.

The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. Within that genus, M. garylangei is allied to the M. ogilbyi group: it most closely resembles Melanotaenia ogilbyi of the adjacent Unir River drainage, sharing the red interscale stripes and the blackish midlateral stripe characteristic of that assemblage, and is separated from its relatives by a combination of meristic, morphometric, and colour-pattern differences rather than by any single diagnostic character.

The specific epithet honours Gary William Lange of St Louis, Missouri, an American rainbowfish enthusiast credited with first discovering the species. The genus name combines the Greek melan, meaning black or dark, with the Latin taenia, meaning band or stripe, in reference to the dark lateral band shown by many members of the genus.

Morphology

Melanotaenia garylangei is a small, elongate, laterally compressed rainbowfish. The largest recorded specimen measured 3 in in standard length, making it one of the more modestly sized members of the genus. The body is comparatively slender for a Melanotaenia rather than deep and diamond-shaped, and it carries the family's characteristic divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Meristic counts from the original description give five to seven dorsal spines and twelve to fifteen dorsal soft rays, with a single anal spine and sixteen to twenty anal soft rays.

The colour is the species' calling card, best developed in adult males. The nape is blue, the upper body olive-green, and a blackish midlateral stripe runs along the flank across roughly two scale rows; the line immediately above the upper row is regularly broken, with the intervening scales taking on a greenish cast. One or two red stripes run above and below the dark midlateral band. The second dorsal, the pectoral and anal fins, and the middle of the caudal fin are washed with red, and in males the dorsal and anal fins become elongated. These fin extensions begin to develop from about 1 in standard length in aquarium-reared fish. Females and juveniles are correspondingly plainer, a pattern of dimorphism typical of the genus.

Habitat

Melanotaenia garylangei is known from several small rainforest streams in the Brazza River drainage of the Eilanden River system, in the southern lowlands of New Guinea. The species was found where these creeks cross a recently cut road, and its documented range is extremely limited — the central fact behind its conservation listing. Recorded water at the collection sites was clear to tannin-stained, over a typically muddy substrate, with submerged aquatic vegetation present at some localities, including the water-lily relative Barclaya. Undisturbed sites were partly shaded by rainforest canopy, while disturbed sites were sun-exposed.

It favours shallow margins, roughly 4–8 in deep, usually covered with floating grass. It shares these creeks with several other fishes that divide up the habitat: Melanotaenia goldiei occupies faster, more open water; Melanotaenia rubrostriata keeps nearer the stream edges; a Pseudomugil blue-eye lives in the very shallowest water, about 2–4 in deep; and the glassfish Ambassis agrammus is also present. FishBase characterises the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical, consistent with a small lowland-creek rainbowfish.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Melanotaenia garylangei has been published, and on this point the data are sparse. Based on its relatives, FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 2.9, placing the species among the omnivores. Rainbowfishes of this size and habitat generally feed in the upper and middle water column on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects taken at the surface — supplemented by algae and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces and vegetation.

In the aquarium the species can be expected to behave like other small Melanotaenia: an undemanding, opportunistic feeder that accepts good-quality flake and small pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworm. A varied diet with a live or frozen component supports both colour and breeding condition. As an active, more or less continuous grazer, it is best fed small amounts several times a day rather than in a single large feeding.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for Melanotaenia garylangei have not been formally documented, but the species follows the reproductive pattern general to the genus. Aquarium observation indicates that fish mature at around 1 in standard length and roughly six months of age, and that males develop their elongate dorsal and anal fins from about 1 in standard length — the physical changes that accompany sexual maturity and display.

In rainbowfishes generally, dominant males stake out display areas and court females with intense colour, flaring the elongated fins and flashing the body until the blue nape, red fin margins, and red lateral stripes peak. Display and spawning run hardest in the early hours after first light, and males show best with rivals present, so the species looks its finest when several males are kept together. Females are far plainer, and the sexes are most reliably told apart by the males' brighter colour and extended fins.

Breeding

Detailed breeding records specific to Melanotaenia garylangei are limited, and what is known of its early development is drawn largely from the genus. Rainbowfishes are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes with no parental care. Eggs of Melanotaenia are clear to light amber and roughly 0.5 in in diameter — mostly around 0.5 in — and bear a few sticky adhesive filaments by which they hang from fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops; larvae hatch at about 0.5 in.

In captivity the species can be expected to spawn in the genus's typical manner: conditioned adults release a few eggs at a time over many days rather than a single clutch, depositing them over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic mops. Because adult rainbowfishes will eat their own eggs and offer no care, breeders harvest the spawning medium to a separate rearing container. The tiny fry require very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' restricted wild range, the import-risk literature explicitly notes captive breeding from limited founder stock as a possible conservation safeguard, though such a programme would have to manage the genetic narrowness of a small founding group.

In the aquarium

Melanotaenia garylangei is present in the aquarium trade and, like other rainbowfishes, is best kept as an active, peaceful schooling fish in a group of six or more, ideally with several males so they display against one another and hold their colour. Its small adult size — under about 3 in — makes it more suitable for medium-sized planted aquaria than the larger, 4.5 in-plus rainbowfishes, though it still wants an open swimming lane and some surface movement.

Aquarium conditions should reflect the species' lowland rainforest-creek origins: warm, soft to moderately hard, clear or lightly tannin-stained water suits it, and the wild fish's preference for shallow, vegetated, floating-grass margins suggests that a well-planted tank with marginal cover and subdued or dappled lighting will show it at its best. Precise published aquarium parameters for this species are sparse, so the safest approach is to follow general small-rainbowfish husbandry — stable warm tropical temperatures, good filtration, and a varied diet — rather than to chase exact numbers. Peaceful, similarly sized tankmates such as other small rainbowfishes, blue-eyes, and peaceful tetras or rasboras are natural companions.

Conservation

Melanotaenia garylangei is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion D2, in an assessment by Allen, Hammer, and Unmack dated December 2019 and published in 2020. The D2 listing reflects a very restricted distribution: the species is known from only a small number of locations within a single drainage, so that a plausible threat acting over a short time could rapidly drive it toward a higher category of risk.

The assessment singles out one such threat. An introduced or translocated rainbowfish has been recorded near the village close to the type locality, and if it were to hybridise with or displace M. garylangei the species could be pushed toward Critically Endangered. A narrowly endemic fish confined to a handful of small creeks has little buffering capacity against introductions, habitat disturbance, or the road-cutting that exposed some of its sites to sunlight. The import-risk literature notes that the species is harmless to humans and not listed as noxious, and that captive breeding from limited founder stock has been advocated as a conservation tool — a reminder that, for a fish this restricted in the wild, responsibly kept aquarium populations can carry genuine conservation value.
