The Goldie River rainbowfish is one of the more widespread and adaptable members of its genus, a silvery, blue-green to yellowish rainbowfish scattered across the lowland swamps, backwaters, and rivers of southern New Guinea. Named for the Goldie River near Port Moresby, it lacks the bold two-tone colour of celebrity rainbowfishes like the Boeseman's, but it is hardy and ecologically flexible — at home in everything from forest tributary streams to large rivers — and is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia goldiei was described by William John Macleay in 1883 from material collected in the Goldie River of what is now Papua New Guinea. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Melanotaenia goldiei (Macleay, 1883); the parenthetical authority indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently moved into Melanotaenia, where it has since remained. The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes — which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia.

The specific epithet goldiei is an eponym honouring Andrew Goldie (1840–1891), a Scottish-born naturalist, collector, and trader who settled in British New Guinea and died in Port Moresby; the Goldie River that supplies the type locality carries the same name. The genus name combines Greek melanos, 'black' or 'dark', with tainia, 'band' or 'stripe', a reference to the dark lateral band shown by many species of the genus.

Across its broad southern New Guinea range the Goldie River rainbowfish is morphologically variable, and historically a number of populations and nominal forms have been associated with or separated from it. Because meristic and colour characters overlap broadly among lowland Melanotaenia, the species is best understood as a wide-ranging, somewhat plastic lowland rainbowfish rather than a sharply diagnosable one, and the limits of the M. goldiei complex have been revisited by later workers.

Morphology

Melanotaenia goldiei is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed rainbowfish with the fusiform, normally-proportioned body typical of the lowland members of the genus rather than the deep, diamond-shaped profile of species such as the Boeseman's or lacustrine rainbowfishes. FishBase records a maximum length of about 4.5 in SL for males and unsexed fish and around 4 in SL for females, making it a medium-sized rainbowfish. Like all Melanotaenia it carries the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — together with a long-based anal fin.

Reported fin counts span 6 to 7 dorsal spines and 12 to 17 dorsal soft rays, with a single anal spine and 21 to 26 anal soft rays. The base colour is silvery to bluish-green or yellowish, plainer and more subdued than the highly coloured aquarium-celebrity rainbowfishes; a dark mid-lateral stripe — the feature that gives the genus its name — is commonly expressed. As in rainbowfishes generally, colour intensity is mood- and condition-dependent, and dominant displaying males show more saturated and contrasting tones than subordinate or stressed individuals.

Precise colour descriptions vary across the species' wide range and among the populations that have at times been lumped with M. goldiei, so accounts of fine markings should be treated as population-specific rather than fixed for the species as a whole.

Habitat

The Goldie River rainbowfish is a lowland species of southern New Guinea, recorded broadly across the island between roughly 3 and 10 degrees south. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish that turns up across a wide range of still and flowing habitats: FishBase reports it from swamps, backwaters, tributary streams, and large rivers. That puts it among the more ecologically flexible rainbowfishes rather than a narrow specialist.

Reported water conditions place it in warm, near-neutral to alkaline water — temperatures of about 77–82 °F, pH around 7.0 to 7.8, and moderate hardness — consistent with tropical lowland rivers and floodplain systems. This breadth of tolerance, from sluggish backwaters to the open water of large rivers, underlies both its wide distribution and its secure conservation status.

Because the species ranges over much of southern New Guinea and inhabits several habitat types, local conditions differ considerably from one site to another, and the figures above should be read as a general envelope for the species rather than as the conditions of any single population.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Melanotaenia goldiei are sparse, but its low trophic level — estimated at about 2.9 by FishBase — and the general biology of the genus indicate an omnivore that feeds in the upper and middle water column. The natural diet of lowland rainbowfishes comprises small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates such as insect larvae and small crustaceans, surface-taken insects, and algal and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces.

In captivity the species would be expected to behave as a typical, undemanding rainbowfish, accepting good-quality flake and small pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, with some vegetable matter. As an active continuous grazer it does best on small amounts offered several times a day rather than a single large feeding, and a varied diet with a live or frozen component improves both colour and breeding condition.

Species-specific aquarium husbandry literature for M. goldiei is thin compared with the hobby-celebrity rainbowfishes, so the feeding guidance here is drawn from genus-level husbandry and its measured trophic position rather than from dedicated M. goldiei accounts.

Mating

Like rainbowfishes generally, Melanotaenia goldiei is an egg-scattering, plant-spawning fish; FishBase notes reproduction by distinct pairing during courtship. Males of the genus are competitive and display to females with intensified colour, flared fins, and a flickering pale 'courtship band' that flashes along the head and nape — most vivid in the morning, when spawning is concentrated in the hours after first light.

A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation, where the pair release small numbers of eggs at a time. Because males display most strongly in the presence of rivals, the species is at its most colourful and reproductively active when several individuals are kept together, and the social, group-courting behaviour typical of the genus would be expected in this species.

Dedicated field observations of courtship in M. goldiei specifically are limited, so the description above reflects the well-documented reproductive behaviour of Melanotaenia as a genus, anchored to the distinct-pairing note recorded for this species.

Breeding

Melanotaenia goldiei is a continuous egg-scattering spawner rather than a seasonal one, depositing small adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments among fine-leaved plants or, in captivity, synthetic spawning mops — the standard pattern for the genus. Females release a few eggs at a time over an extended period rather than a single large clutch, so a conditioned female may yield eggs over many days.

At typical tropical temperatures the adhesive eggs of rainbowfishes hatch after roughly one to two weeks, the incubation shortening with warmth, and the adults offer no parental care — they will consume their own eggs and fry, so breeders harvest the spawning medium to a separate rearing container. The tiny fry hang near the surface at first and require very small first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake, with growth and colour developing gradually.

FishBase classifies the species' resilience as medium. Direct breeding reports for M. goldiei in the aquarium are uncommon relative to the popular trade rainbowfishes, so the husbandry detail here is generalised from the well-established breeding biology of Melanotaenia rather than from M. goldiei–specific spawning accounts.

In the aquarium

Where it is available, the Goldie River rainbowfish would be kept as a typical medium-sized rainbowfish: an active, peaceful, sociable schooling fish best maintained in a group of six or more, with enough open horizontal swimming space to suit a restless, strong-swimming species of around 4.5 in. A long tank with an unobstructed central swimming lane, some surface movement, and planted margins shows the fish to best effect and encourages morning display behaviour.

Water chemistry should reflect its warm, near-neutral to mildly alkaline lowland origins — temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, pH around neutral to slightly above, and moderate hardness — though, as with most rainbowfishes, stable conditions and good filtration matter more than precise numbers, and captive-bred Melanotaeniid stock generally adapts to a wide range of conditions. Peaceful, similarly sized tankmates such as other rainbowfishes, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, and rasboras make natural companions.

M. goldiei is far less common in the hobby than the colour-celebrity rainbowfishes and is not a fixture of species-specific care guides, so the husbandry above is extrapolated from genus-level rainbowfish keeping and the species' recorded wild water parameters rather than from dedicated M. goldiei aquarium literature.

Conservation

Melanotaenia goldiei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The listing reflects the species' broad distribution across southern New Guinea and its tolerance of a wide range of lowland habitats — swamps, backwaters, tributary streams, and large rivers — which together give it far more resilience than the narrowly endemic, single-lake rainbowfishes that dominate the family's threatened-species list.

FishBase records the species as harmless to humans and as the subject of both commercial fisheries and the commercial aquarium trade, and rates its biological resilience as medium. A wide-ranging, habitat-flexible fish of this kind is comparatively buffered against localised pressures, since declines at any one site do not threaten the species as a whole.

That said, an Australian government (DCCEEW) review has noted that the species has a limited distribution in the context of biosecurity and trade assessment, a reminder that 'widespread within New Guinea' is not the same as globally abundant. The conservation picture for the M. goldiei complex is also complicated by ongoing taxonomic uncertainty: if currently included populations are eventually recognised as separate species, the range and status of M. goldiei in the strict sense could be reassessed.
