Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia gracilis was described by Gerald R. Allen in 1978, in the popular-science magazine Tropical Fish Hobbyist (volume 26, issue 10), with the type locality given as the Drysdale River in Western Australia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia gracilis Allen, 1978; because the species was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used. It carries the CAAB (Codes for Australian Aquatic Biota) code 37245008.
The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. M. gracilis is one of the Australian members of the genus, part of the Kimberley fauna of the country's tropical northwest. In its range it is sympatric with the much wider-ranging Melanotaenia splendida australis (also referred to as Melanotaenia australis), from which it is distinguished chiefly by its more slender body form — the feature that gives it both its specific epithet and its common name.
Meristic characters reported for the species include a divided dorsal fin (the family's signature) with the first dorsal of IV–VI spines and the second of I,7–10; an anal fin of I,17–20; pectoral rays 12–15; an absent lateral line; and horizontal scale rows of 9–10 with 33–35 in vertical series. The caudal fin is forked. As in much of the genus, these counts overlap broadly with related species, so identification leans on body proportion and colour more than on hard meristics.
Morphology
As its name promises, Melanotaenia gracilis is a comparatively slender rainbowfish, less deep-bodied than many of its relatives. Males reach about 3 in standard length and females about 2.5 in, making it a small to moderately sized species. Mature males are not only larger but noticeably deeper-bodied than females, a difference that becomes pronounced with age — the clearest expression of sexual dimorphism in the species.
The colour is subdued by rainbowfish standards. The back and upper sides are greenish to olive-brown, shading to mauve below, with an indistinct dark mid-lateral stripe and an iridescent lavender sheen along the lower flanks. The fins are yellowish to transparent or slightly pink. Mature males add modest but distinctive markings: a red margin to the dorsal and anal fins, and red tips on the lobes of the forked caudal fin. There is no bold two-tone or banded pattern of the kind seen in showier congeners; what this fish offers is sheen and a clean, slender outline rather than saturated colour.
Habitat
Melanotaenia gracilis is endemic to the extreme northern Kimberley region of Western Australia, known only from the King Edward River and the Drysdale River system — an area roughly 311 mi southwest of Darwin, between about 13 and 16 degrees south. This is a very small natural range, and the species occurs nowhere outside it.
Within those rivers it inhabits large water courses and isolated rocky pools, typically in clear water with minimal flow during the dry season. The river channels are characteristically bordered by paperbark (Melaleuca) trees and Pandanus palms. Reported water temperatures span roughly 72–82 °F, reflecting the tropical monsoonal climate of the region. During the dry season, when flow drops, large numbers of fish congregate in shady pools, gathering around log snags, submerged branches, and other woody debris that provide cover.
Its biology follows the monsoon: abundant connected water in the wet, contracting to a handful of persistent pools in the dry. The fish depends on a small set of river systems in a remote, little-studied corner of the continent — which is why a narrow-range endemic like this stays vulnerable even where its habitat is, for now, largely undisturbed.
Feeding
The natural diet of Melanotaenia gracilis is only partly documented, but like rainbowfishes generally it is an opportunistic omnivore feeding in the upper and middle water column. Reported and inferred food items include aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and some algae — a mix of small invertebrate prey and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces.
Fish gathering around log snags and submerged branches in dry-season pools suggest one that forages among woody cover, taking drifting and surface-fallen insects and grazing what grows on submerged surfaces. The trophic level is low — around 3.0 — as expected for a small, broadly omnivorous fish rather than a specialised predator. Beyond that, dietary study of the species in the wild is sparse.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Melanotaenia gracilis specifically is poorly known, and much of what can be said is inferred from the well-studied breeding biology of the genus as a whole. Rainbowfishes are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes in which males court females with colour displays in the early hours after first light, and the slender rainbowfish is reported to form distinct pairs at spawning.
In Melanotaenia generally, a displaying male intensifies its colours and signals to a receptive female, who follows him into fine-leaved vegetation where eggs are released a few at a time. The red fin margins and caudal tips of male M. gracilis are presumably the signals at work in such courtship, brightening when a male comes into breeding condition. The species has been little bred and little observed, so the fine detail of its mating — timing, site selection, the role of male competition — rests on the genus rather than on confirmed records for this fish.
Breeding
Breeding biology specific to Melanotaenia gracilis is poorly documented; the species is an egg layer, and aquarium accounts treat it as a peaceful community fish that pairs distinctly to spawn. The detail that can be stated is largely the standard rainbowfish pattern: females are likely to produce adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments and attach to vegetation, deposited over fine-leaved plants or, in captivity, over spawning mops.
In the genus, spawning runs over many days, a female releasing a few eggs daily rather than a single large clutch, and the adhesive eggs hatch after roughly a week or more at typical warm temperatures, with the tiny surface-oriented fry needing very small first foods. There is no parental care, and adults will consume their own eggs. For M. gracilis no body of species-specific observation has replaced these expectations — the data are sparse — so a breeder would work by analogy to better-studied rainbowfishes and treat the particulars as provisional.
In the aquarium
Melanotaenia gracilis is rarely seen in the aquarium trade and is mostly of interest to keepers of Australian native fishes and rainbowfish specialists rather than to the general hobby. Where it is kept, it behaves as a peaceful, schooling community fish, and like other rainbowfishes is best maintained in a group so that it shoals naturally and males display.
Reported aquarium conditions sit in the middle of the dial: a temperature around 75 °F, a pH near 7, and a hardness of about 10 dGH, broadly matching the clear, warm river water of its Kimberley home. It is an active open-water swimmer, so it wants room to school and some structure — branches and plants standing in for the log snags and submerged cover of its wild pools. The colours are gentle rather than gaudy, which suits aquarists who value form and sheen over bold pattern. Given its Endangered status and restricted range, fish that do reach the hobby are worth maintaining and breeding to keep the species established in captivity.
Conservation
Melanotaenia gracilis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B2ab(iii), in an assessment dated 1 February 2019 (Red List version 2025-2). The listing reflects its very restricted natural range — confined to the Drysdale and King Edward River systems of the northern Kimberley — and the limited resilience that comes with being a narrow-range endemic. A fish confined to a small cluster of river systems has no large outlying population to buffer it against local decline or habitat change.
There is a documented discrepancy in published conservation status: the IUCN currently lists the species as Endangered (2019), while some references, including the Museums Victoria Fishes of Australia account, carry an older Near Threatened designation, and the species is not listed under Australia's EPBC Act 1999. The current IUCN Endangered assessment is the authoritative figure used here. The Kimberley remains one of the more remote and intact parts of tropical Australia, but the species' tiny footprint means that any future pressure on those few river systems — altered flow, introduced fishes, or habitat disturbance — would weigh heavily on the whole population, which is the concern the Endangered listing is built to flag.
