Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia japenensis was described by Gerald R. Allen and Norbert J. Cross in 1980, in the same revision of New Guinea rainbowfishes (Records of the Western Australian Museum) that introduced several other now-familiar Melanotaenia, including the popular M. boesemani. The first specimens had been collected for science decades earlier, in 1955, by the Dutch ichthyologist Marinus Boeseman of the Leiden natural history museum, whose New Guinea material underpinned much of the genus's later taxonomy. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia japenensis Allen & Cross, 1980; because the species has remained in the genus in which it was described, no parenthetical authority is used.
The specific epithet japenensis is a toponym referring to Japen (now more commonly spelled Yapen), the island that is the species' entire known range. The genus name Melanotaenia derives from the Greek melan, 'black,' and the Latinised taenia, 'stripe' — for the dark lateral band many rainbowfishes carry. Melanotaenia is the largest genus in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which range across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. M. japenensis belongs to the New Guinea group, and what sets it apart is its restricted island distribution and colour rather than any hard meristic character — those overlap broadly across the genus.
Morphology
Melanotaenia japenensis is a small to medium rainbowfish. FishBase gives a maximum recorded length of 3 in SL (from Allen's 1991 field guide), while hobby accounts cite specimens reaching at least 4.5 in total length; the larger figure should be read against the smaller, better-documented standard length. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed and moderately deep-bodied, carrying the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Meristic counts recorded for the species are 5–6 dorsal spines and 15–17 dorsal soft rays, with a single anal spine and 26–28 anal soft rays.
For the genus, the Yapen rainbowfish is a subtle fish. The body is pale purple with silvery reflections across the back and sides, overlaid by a fine red-orange stripe running between each horizontal row of scales — so the flank reads as a set of warm parallel lines rather than one bold band. In males the dorsal, anal and caudal fins take on red-to-orange tones. As in rainbowfishes generally, colour depends on mood and condition and runs brightest in displaying males; females and juveniles are plainer. Accounts of its coloration are sparse, and much of the fine detail of its appearance is poorly documented.
Habitat
Melanotaenia japenensis is known only from Yapen Island (Japen), part of the Schouten Islands in Cenderawasih Bay, off the north coast of Indonesian West Papua. The island is long and narrow — roughly 99 mi by 12 mi — and mountainous, rising to peaks of around 1,1640 ft and separated from the New Guinea mainland by the Yapen Strait. It is drained by numerous short streams and rivers running off the central highlands to the coast. The species' position at latitude 1–2° S places it firmly in the equatorial tropics.
The fish turns up in the lower, coastal reaches of these watercourses, in clear water flowing over rocky bottoms amid dense rainforest. It is a benthopelagic freshwater species, at home in the moving water of forest streams rather than still lakes. Past that, quantitative habitat data — measured water chemistry, depth profiles, seasonal variation — appear never to have been published for the species, and what figures exist come from aquarium keeping rather than field measurement. Its confinement to a single island, with no outlying populations, is the defining fact of its ecology and the root of its conservation problem.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Melanotaenia japenensis, and its feeding is inferred from the genus. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with an opportunistic omnivore feeding in the upper and middle water column. The natural diet of stream-dwelling rainbowfishes comprises small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects taken at the surface — together with algae and plant matter grazed from submerged surfaces.
In the aquarium it is reported as undemanding, taking the standard rainbowfish fare: good-quality flake and small pellets, plus frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm and Cyclops, with some vegetable content. As with its relatives, a varied diet that includes live or frozen items improves colour and conditioning. Small feedings spread through the day suit an active, near-constant grazer better than one large meal.
Mating
FishBase records the reproductive mode of Melanotaenia japenensis simply as 'distinct pairing,' and no detailed account of its courtship has been published. The behaviour likely follows the well-documented genus pattern: dominant males stake out display areas and court females with intensified colour, flared fins and body-flashing, usually most vivid in the morning. A flickering pale 'courtship band' along the head and nape, seen in many rainbowfishes during display, may well feature here, though no one has recorded it for this species.
What little is known suggests the Yapen rainbowfish, like its relatives, is a non-seasonal spawner that pairs and releases eggs over a long period rather than in one event. Males display hardest with rivals present, so keeping several together should bring out both colour and spawning behaviour — but that is extrapolated from the genus, not documented for M. japenensis, and the species' mating biology is best treated as data sparse.
Breeding
There is no published aquarium-breeding account specific to Melanotaenia japenensis. The species is rare in the hobby, and the standard hobby sources note an absence of recorded breeding information for it. What can be said is by analogy with the genus, which is uniformly composed of egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes that give no parental care.
In other Melanotaenia, conditioned adults drop small numbers of adhesive eggs daily over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops, the eggs hanging by fine filaments. Spawning runs over many days rather than producing a single clutch, and at typical breeding temperatures the eggs hatch after roughly a week to twelve days. Adults eat eggs and fry, so breeders move the spawning medium to a separate rearing container, and the tiny fry need very small first foods before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp. Whether M. japenensis follows this template exactly is untested; without direct evidence, any breeding protocol for it should be read as provisional, adapted from better-known congeners.
In the aquarium
A rarity in the trade, but the little hobby experience there is suggests the Yapen rainbowfish is not difficult to keep. Like other rainbowfishes it is active, peaceful and schooling, best kept in a group; a long open swimming lane and stable conditions matter more than precise water values. A balanced or male-skewed group pushes the males to display against one another and hold their colour.
Reported conditions are warm and alkaline: about75–82 °F (75–82 °F) and a pH around 7.2–7.4. These come from hobby keeping rather than field measurement, but they fit the genus's preference for neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water. A planted tank with open central swimming space, some surface movement and bright lighting shows the fish off best. Good tankmates are similarly sized, peaceful species — other rainbowfishes, larger tetras, peaceful barbs or rasboras. Given how scarce it is, anyone keeping it should aim to establish and pass on captive-bred stock rather than lean on the occasional wild import.
Conservation
Melanotaenia japenensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii,iv), in an assessment dated 3 December 2019. The listing reflects the species' extreme geographic restriction: its entire known range is Yapen Island, and the criterion B coding points to a small extent of occurrence together with a continuing decline in habitat quality and area of occupancy.
A fish confined to the coastal streams of one island has no outlying population to buffer it against local pressures — habitat loss in even part of its range bears on the whole species. FishBase rates the population's intrinsic resilience as medium (doubling time roughly 1.4–4.4 years), which gives some capacity to recover, but that sits against a naturally tiny range. The Yapen rainbowfish is rarely traded, so collecting is unlikely to be the main threat; habitat change on the island is what the Red List criteria flag. As with other narrowly endemic rainbowfishes, keeping captive-bred lines in the hobby is a useful hedge against loss in the wild.
