Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia laticlavia was described in 2014 by Gerald R. Allen, Peter J. Unmack and Renny K. Hadiaty in the journal aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology (volume 20, pages 139–158), as one of three new rainbowfishes from the Bird's Head Peninsula of West Papua, Indonesia — the others being M. ericrobertsi and M. multiradiata. The species was distinguished from its relatives in the broader Ayamaru-region complex by a combination of adult male colour pattern and cytochrome b genetics, and additionally by its dark upper and lower caudal-fin margins. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia laticlavia Allen, Unmack & Hadiaty, 2014; because it was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority applies.
The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, a group of small, often brilliantly coloured atheriniform fishes radiating across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. Within that genus M. laticlavia sits among a cluster of Bird's Head species centred on the Ayamaru lake-and-stream country. As usual in the genus, the meristic characters overlap broadly with congeners, so colour pattern and molecular data do most of the diagnostic work rather than fin-ray or scale counts alone.
The generic name combines the Greek melan, 'black', with the Latin taenia, 'stripe', referring to the dark lateral band seen across many species of the genus. The specific epithet laticlavia is Latin for 'having a broad stripe', chosen for the broad bluish-grey stripe along the lower side of the body that characterises the species.
Morphology
Melanotaenia laticlavia is a small rainbowfish, reaching about 3 in in standard length; the type series comprised six specimens spanning roughly 1.5–2.5 in SL. It has the moderately deep, laterally compressed body typical of the genus — the greatest body depth in an adult male falls about 2.8 to 3.0 times in standard length — together with the family's divided dorsal fin. Meristic counts from the original description are dorsal spines 5–7 and dorsal soft rays 14–17; a single anal spine with 24–26 anal soft rays (usually 24); 14–15 pectoral rays; and 36–37 lateral scales. The palate bears two separate patches of vomerine teeth.
The colour in life is olive green to yellowish, grading to white on the underside, with a faint orange stripe running between each horizontal scale row. A mid-lateral dark stripe is present and becomes broader and more prominent toward the rear of the body. The dorsal and anal fins carry a dark submarginal stripe set off by a pale outer margin, and the caudal-fin margins are narrowly blackish — a feature the describers used to help separate the species from its relatives.
The species' namesake mark is the broad blue-grey zone on the lower side: in both sexes a wide bluish-grey band tapers posteriorly along the lower flank, running from below the pectoral-fin base back to above the middle of the anal fin. In adult males the breast is washed yellow-orange, while in females it is whitish. As in rainbowfishes generally, mature males are the deeper-bodied and more vividly marked sex.
Habitat
Melanotaenia laticlavia is known only from Aifuf Creek, a single small watercourse in the upper reaches of the Kamundan River system on the Bird's Head Peninsula of West Papua (Papua Barat Province), Indonesia. The Kamundan drains to Berau Bay, and the type locality lies about 27 mi east of Lake Ayamaru, at roughly 1.33° S, 132.59° E. The collection site sits at about 505 ft elevation, some 67 mi north of the river mouth — and, following the river's path, on the order of 137 mi upstream from the sea.
The habitat is a narrow, shallow forest stream: roughly 3–7 ft wide and reaching only about 2–3 ft deep, with a very gradual gradient and sand-and-gravel bottoms, flowing through second-growth forest. The fish is a freshwater, benthopelagic species recorded from the shallow 0–3 ft depth range of this small lotic system. This is a clear-water, gently flowing stream environment rather than a lake, distinguishing it from some of its Ayamaru-basin relatives.
Specific physical and chemical water measurements for the laticlavia type locality were not reported in the original description — the temperature and pH figures sometimes seen for Bird's Head rainbowfishes pertain to other species at other sites. For that reason the species' precise temperature and pH tolerances should be treated as data sparse, with husbandry guided by the general requirements of small New Guinea rainbowfishes from clear forest streams.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study has been published for Melanotaenia laticlavia, but its feeding ecology can be inferred from the genus and from its measured trophic level of about 2.9, which places it as a low-level omnivore. Rainbowfishes of this kind are opportunistic feeders that work the upper and middle water column, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects drifting at or near the surface — along with algae and fine plant and detrital material.
In a small, shaded forest stream such as Aifuf Creek, terrestrial insects falling from overhanging vegetation and aquatic invertebrates among the sand and gravel substrate would be expected to make up much of the diet, supplemented by grazed algae. As with its relatives, the species is best understood as a generalist invertivore-omnivore rather than a specialist.
In aquarium terms — for the small number of specimens that reach hobbyists — a Melanotaenia of this profile is undemanding and would be expected to accept good-quality flake and small pellets together with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm and Cyclops, with some vegetable matter. Frequent small feedings suit an active, continuously grazing rainbowfish better than a single large meal.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship in Melanotaenia laticlavia have not been published; what can be said draws on the well-documented reproductive behaviour of the genus. Rainbowfishes are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes with no parental care, and they are typically continuous or near-continuous spawners under favourable conditions rather than strict seasonal breeders. Males are social and competitive, and the brightest displays occur when several males contend for the attention of females.
In congeners, a dominant male establishes a display area and courts females with intensified colour, flared fins and a flickering pale 'courtship band' or nuptial stripe that flashes along the head and nape — a signal that reaches its peak in the early morning hours after first light. A receptive female follows the displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation, where eggs are released a few at a time.
For M. laticlavia specifically, the original description notes sexual dimorphism inferred from photographs — males are deeper-bodied and show the species' adult colour pattern — but no adult female specimens were available to the describers, and no spawning observations were recorded. Its courtship is therefore presumed to follow the standard Melanotaenia pattern, with the details for this particular fish still undocumented.
Breeding
No breeding records exist specifically for Melanotaenia laticlavia, which remains known from very few specimens and is absent from the aquarium trade. The account here is drawn from its close relatives in the genus, all open-water egg-scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants.
In Melanotaenia generally, conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic spawning mops, the female releasing small numbers of adhesive eggs at a time over an extended period of many days rather than producing a single clutch. The eggs hang from the spawning medium by fine filaments; at warm tropical temperatures they typically hatch after roughly a week to a week and a half, the interval shortening with warmth. Adults offer no parental care and will consume their own eggs, so under controlled conditions breeders remove the eggs or mops to a separate rearing container.
The tiny fry of rainbowfishes hang near the surface at first and require very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered prepared food. Whether M. laticlavia conforms to this template in every detail is unverified, but given the consistency of breeding biology across the genus it is the reasonable working expectation. With a measured population-doubling time of about 1.4 to 4.4 years, the species is judged to have medium reproductive resilience.
In the aquarium
Melanotaenia laticlavia is rarely if ever encountered in the aquarium hobby; FishBase notes only an 'aquarium potential' for the species, reflecting its remote, single-stream range and its recent description. There is consequently no established body of husbandry experience specific to this fish, and any keeping recommendations are extrapolated from the requirements of small New Guinea stream rainbowfishes.
On that basis a fish of this size and origin would suit a group setting — rainbowfishes are sociable, active schoolers that show best and behave most naturally in numbers, with males colouring up against one another. A long tank with open swimming space, clear and well-filtered water, and some planted cover would reproduce the clear, gently flowing forest-stream character of Aifuf Creek. Because the species reaches only about 3 in, it would not require the very large quarters demanded by the biggest rainbowfishes.
The most important caveat is water chemistry: the temperature and pH of the type locality were not recorded, so precise targets cannot be given (data sparse). Stable, clean, moderately warm tropical water in line with general rainbowfish practice — avoiding extremes — is the safe default until species-specific data exist. Any aquarium stock should be captive-bred or responsibly sourced rather than drawn from the wild, given the species' restricted natural range.
Conservation
Melanotaenia laticlavia is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, an assessment dated 4 December 2019. Criterion D2 applies to species with a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations such that they are prone to the effects of human activities or stochastic events within a short time — exactly the situation of a fish known from a single small creek.
The species' entire documented range is Aifuf Creek in the upper Kamundan system; a narrowly endemic fish confined to one watercourse has essentially no buffering population elsewhere, so any localised disturbance — habitat alteration in the catchment, deforestation, sedimentation, or the introduction of non-native fishes, all of which have affected other Bird's Head rainbowfishes — could threaten the whole population at once. That pinpoint distribution, rather than any documented ongoing decline, is the basis of the Vulnerable listing.
The fish is otherwise considered harmless and of no fisheries importance, with only a theoretical ornamental interest. Because it is scarcely present in captivity, the hobby offers little of the conservation safety-net that captive breeding provides for better-known relatives such as M. boesemani. Protection therefore rests on the integrity of its single forest-stream habitat, and further survey work would help clarify whether the species occurs more widely in the upper Kamundan than the single known site suggests.
