Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia misoolensis was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1982. The species' history is unusual: the type series had been collected decades earlier, in 1948, when M. A. Lieftinck took 23 specimens from a tributary of the Wai Tama at Fakal on Misool Island (2 October 1948). Those fish lay among unstudied New Guinea material in the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam (ZMA) in the Netherlands until Allen located and studied them during a 1981 visit, recognising them as an undescribed species and naming them for their island of origin; the holotype is ZMA 116.456. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia misoolensis Allen, 1982; because it was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.
The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia within the order Atheriniformes. Misool lies off the western tip of New Guinea, and M. misoolensis belongs to the diverse assemblage of rainbowfishes of the Bird's Head region. As is typical of the genus, it is distinguished from its relatives more by colour pattern and geography than by hard meristic characters, which overlap broadly across Melanotaenia. Reported fin counts in the original description are 4 to 6 spines in the first dorsal fin, 12 to 14 soft rays in the second dorsal, a single anal spine, and 20 to 25 anal soft rays.
Morphology
Melanotaenia misoolensis is a small rainbowfish. FishBase gives a maximum recorded length of about 3 in standard length, while the IUCN assessment cites a maximum of about 2.5 in SL; the largest of Allen's original type specimens measured 2.5 in SL. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed, with the family's characteristic divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — though it is comparatively slender rather than deep-bodied.
The colour pattern is the species' most reliable field mark: a yellow to yellowish body with a whitish belly, crossed by a wide blue-black mid-lateral stripe that runs the length of the flank. That dark band against a pale yellow ground separates it from many of its rainbowfish relatives, in which the dark lateral marking is fainter or absent. As in the genus generally, colour intensity depends on mood and condition, brightening in displaying or well-conditioned fish, and males develop more colour than females. Detailed life-colour and dimorphism data for wild fish are sparse — little fieldwork has been done on this island endemic.
Habitat
The Misool rainbowfish is restricted to a very small part of the world. According to the IUCN it is known only from the Tama River, a tributary of the Kasim River, in the north-east of Misool Island in the Raja Ampat group, west of the Bird's Head (Vogelkop) Peninsula of West Papua, Indonesia, at roughly 3 to 4 degrees south of the equator. Its typical habitat is a clear stream flowing through dense tropical jungle — the type material came from a tributary of the Tama (Wai Tama) River at Fakal on Misool.
It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of warm tropical streams; the IUCN describes its habitat as small, slow-flowing rainforest tributaries with boulder or gravel bottoms and little aquatic vegetation. So few collections exist, and so little limnological data have been published for these island waters, that the water chemistry of its natural habitat is barely documented. Hobby sources report that the fish is highly adaptable in captivity across a wide pH range, which hints at tolerance of varied conditions in the wild. Like many island endemics, its global range is tiny — a single small island drainage.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Melanotaenia misoolensis has been published, and FishBase notes that its biology is not well known. Its feeding ecology is therefore inferred from the genus: rainbowfishes are opportunistic omnivores that forage in the upper and middle water column, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen insects — together with algae and plant material. An estimated trophic level of about 2.9 is consistent with this mixed invertebrate-and-plant diet.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the standard rainbowfish fare: good-quality flake and small pellets, along with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Cyclops, plus some vegetable matter. As with its relatives, a varied diet that includes a live or frozen component improves colour and conditions fish for breeding, and small feedings spread through the day suit this active grazer better than a single large meal.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship in Melanotaenia misoolensis are lacking; FishBase records its reproductive mode only as distinct pairing, with the fish forming pairs at spawning rather than spawning in undifferentiated groups. Its mating behaviour is otherwise understood by analogy with the well-studied members of the genus.
In rainbowfishes generally, males court females with intense colour displays — flaring the fins and flashing the body to bring the markings to maximum saturation — and many species show a flickering pale courtship band along the head and nape of a displaying male. Display and spawning peak in the early hours after first light, and a male displays hardest when rivals are present. Breeders therefore condition small groups rather than isolated pairs to bring fish into form. How closely the comparatively plain, single-stripe Misool rainbowfish follows this template in the wild is not documented.
Breeding
Melanotaenia misoolensis is reported by hobbyists to breed readily in captivity using the standard rainbowfish method, although it is uncommon enough in the trade that detailed accounts are limited. Like other Melanotaenia it is an egg-scattering, plant-spawning species with no parental care, depositing small adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops.
The practical approach mirrors that used for its better-known relatives: provide dense Java moss or spawning mops for the fish to deposit eggs on, then move the egg-laden medium to a separate rearing container, since the adults offer no care and will eat eggs and fry. A female releases a few eggs at a time over an extended spawning period rather than a single large clutch. The tiny fry need very small first foods — infusoria and finely ground flake — graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. As is usual in the genus, growth is gradual and full adult coloration develops slowly. Precise figures for egg counts and incubation time specific to this species are not well documented.
In the aquarium
Rare in the hobby, but easy when you have it. The Misool rainbowfish is peaceful and sociable, at home in a community tank or a species setup with similarly sized, non-aggressive companions. Like other rainbowfishes it is an active, schooling fish that shows best in a group with open swimming space; a long tank with some surface movement and bright lighting suits it and brings out the display behaviour.
Its strongest husbandry trait is adaptability. Hobby sources report that it tolerates a wide pH range of roughly 6.0 to 8.5 and a temperature range of about 22 to 28 degrees Celsius (72 to 82 Fahrenheit); the main caution is to avoid rapid pH swings rather than to hit any precise target. Stable, well-filtered water matters more than exact numbers. Between that hardiness, the peaceful temperament, and a modest adult size, it asks little of anyone able to find stock — the principal obstacle to keeping it is simply that it is seldom offered for sale.
Conservation
Melanotaenia misoolensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 4 December 2019. Despite its naturally small range — restricted to a single drainage on Misool Island — the species is not currently considered to face a high extinction risk, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and its population resilience as medium, with an estimated population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS.
That listing rests on thin information. The fish is known from few collections, its biology is poorly studied, and as a narrow island endemic it has little buffer against localised habitat disturbance. The IUCN notes a natural reserve on Misool Island, but the species is not found within it. The clear jungle streams it depends on are vulnerable to shifts in land use and water quality on small, increasingly developed islands. For now the Least Concern status reflects an absence of evidence of decline rather than any detailed monitoring, and protecting the forested catchments of Misool is the surest safeguard for the fish.
