Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia monticola was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1980 from material collected in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia monticola Allen, 1980; the species was described in Melanotaenia and remains there, so no parenthetical authority applies. It belongs to the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, and to the genus Melanotaenia, the family's largest, which radiates across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia.
The specific epithet monticola is Latin for 'mountain-dweller', a direct reference to the fish's highland habitat — it occupies headwater tributaries at elevations far above those of most congeners. Within the genus, M. monticola is a New Guinea highland species rather than one of the colourful lowland-lake forms; like most Melanotaenia it is separated from its relatives more by distribution and colour pattern than by hard meristic characters, since dorsal, anal, and fin-ray counts overlap broadly across the genus. Reported meristics for the species fall in the typical generic range, with roughly five to six dorsal spines, fifteen to seventeen dorsal soft rays, and eighteen to twenty-one anal soft rays.
Morphology
Melanotaenia monticola is a small rainbowfish, reaching about 3 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family whose members rarely exceed 4.5 in. It carries the laterally compressed, moderately deep body and the characteristic divided dorsal fin of the genus: a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal, set against an elongate anal fin. As in other Melanotaenia, the body deepens somewhat with age and is most pronounced in dominant males.
The species is comparatively subdued in colour relative to the vivid lowland rainbowfishes. Detailed wild colour descriptions are data sparse, but in keeping with highland Melanotaenia it is a silvery to olive fish, often with a series of faint vertical bars or a darker mid-lateral line and some warmer tones along the body and fins in mature, displaying males. As with the genus generally, colour is strongly mood- and condition-dependent, brightening when a male is courting or competing and fading under stress. Females and juveniles are plainer than males, consistent with the moderate sexual dimorphism typical across the rainbowfishes.
Habitat
Melanotaenia monticola is endemic to the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where it occupies high-altitude headwater tributaries of the Purari River system. Its documented range is narrow: the area between Mendi and Lake Kutubu, including Omei Creek about 9 mi south of Mendi and small streams near Pimaga, roughly 8 mi southeast of Lake Kutubu. These are montane creeks at elevations reported between about 790 and 1,1969 ft — a markedly higher and cooler setting than the lowland lakes and rivers most rainbowfishes inhabit.
The water of these headwater habitats is correspondingly cool. FishBase records an environmental temperature range of about 64–72 °F for the species, low for a tropical rainbowfish and a direct consequence of its altitude. The fish is benthopelagic in clear, flowing highland streams, where it shelters among rock, submerged wood, and marginal vegetation. The narrow range and the cool, high-elevation niche go together: M. monticola cannot readily disperse to or persist in the warmer lowland waters that surround its highland refuge.
Feeding
Melanotaenia monticola is an omnivore, with a trophic level estimated at around 2.9 — typical of a rainbowfish that takes a mixed diet of small animal and plant material. In its highland-stream habitat the natural diet is dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, including insect larvae and adult insects taken from the surface and water column, supplemented by algae and other plant material grazed from submerged surfaces.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the usual range of foods offered to rainbowfishes: good-quality flake and small pellets, together with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Cyclops, plus some vegetable matter. A varied diet with a meaningful live or frozen component supports condition and colour. As an active, near-continuous grazer, it is best fed small amounts several times a day rather than a single large meal.
Mating
Like rainbowfishes generally, Melanotaenia monticola is an egg-laying species that reproduces by distinct pairing, with a male courting a female before spawning rather than spawning communally in a scramble. FishBase notes distinct pairing during breeding for the species. Dominant males display to females with heightened colour and fin-flaring, and — as is characteristic of the genus — a displaying male may flash a pale 'courtship band' along the head and nape that signals readiness and is most vivid in the morning hours.
Species-specific courtship detail for M. monticola is data sparse, but the genus pattern is well established and consistent: spawning activity peaks in the early hours after first light, and males are at their most colourful in the presence of rivals. A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation, where the pair release small numbers of eggs at a time. Conditioning a small group rather than an isolated pair tends to bring fish into better display and breeding form.
Breeding
Melanotaenia monticola is an egg-layer with no parental care, and in keeping with the genus it is a plant-spawner whose adhesive eggs attach by fine filaments to fine-leaved vegetation or, in captivity, to synthetic spawning mops. Detailed breeding records specific to this species are data sparse, so the account here follows the well-documented and uniform pattern of the genus rather than asserting figures unique to M. monticola.
Conditioned adults typically spawn over many days, a female releasing a few eggs daily rather than a single large clutch. The adhesive eggs hang from the spawning medium and, at suitable temperatures, hatch after roughly a week to ten days, the incubation period shortening with warmth. Because the adults offer no care and will eat eggs and fry, breeders move the spawning mop or the eggs to a separate rearing container. The tiny fry hang near the surface at first and need very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake. Given the species' cooler natural temperatures, breeding is best attempted toward the warmer end of its tolerable range, but without overheating water the fish is not adapted to.
In the aquarium
Melanotaenia monticola is a peaceful, active schooling fish best kept in a group of six or more, where males display against one another and the school behaves naturally. As a smaller rainbowfish at around 3 in it does not need the very large tanks demanded by the biggest lowland species, but it is a restless swimmer and benefits from an aquarium with a long, open swimming lane, some structure of rock and wood, and planted margins to provide cover and spawning sites.
Temperature is the thing to get right. Unlike its warm-water lowland relatives, M. monticola comes from cool highland creeks with an environmental range of roughly 64–72 °F, and it is suited to the lower, even sub-tropical end of the rainbowfish temperature spectrum rather than the high-20s °C many aquarists default to. FishBase's reference aquarium parameters for the species are a pH of about 7.8, hardness around 16, and a water temperature near 66 °F — neutral to alkaline, moderately hard, and notably cool. Stable conditions and good filtration matter more than precise numbers, and the species pairs well with similarly sized, peaceful, cooler-tolerant tankmates. Because its colours are subtler than those of the showier rainbowfishes, it rewards good lighting and a varied diet to bring out what warmth of tone it has.
Conservation
Melanotaenia monticola is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), with an assessment dated 5 December 2019. The listing reflects the species' restricted range: it is a montane endemic confined to a small cluster of highland tributaries in the Purari system of Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands, between Mendi and Lake Kutubu. A small extent of occurrence, combined with potential decline in the quality of its highland-stream habitat, drives the B1 listing — a narrowly distributed species in a single upland catchment has little resilience to localised disturbance.
What protects M. monticola is the remoteness and altitude of its habitat, which limit the kinds of large-scale habitat alteration and the introduction of non-native competitors that have devastated some of its lowland-lake relatives. The species appears in the aquarium and minor commercial fisheries but is harmless to humans, and its highland creeks remain comparatively undisturbed. As with all restricted-range endemics, however, its long-term security depends on the integrity of that small catchment, and the Near Threatened listing is a flag that the margin for habitat loss is narrow.
