Taxonomy & naming
Melanotaenia pierucciae was described by Gerald R. Allen and Samuel J. Renyaan in 1996, in a paper presenting three new rainbowfishes from the Triton Lakes of Irian Jaya (now West Papua), New Guinea, published in the journal aqua (Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology, vol. 2, part 2, pages 13–24). The description rested on a series of thirteen specimens ranging from 1–2.5 in standard length; the holotype, a male of 2.5 in SL catalogued as MZB 6207, was taken from Werfyang Creek. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia pierucciae Allen & Renyaan, 1996, retained in the original genus and therefore carrying no parenthetical authority.
The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. M. pierucciae belongs to the small endemic assemblage of the Triton Lakes and is, on the original authors' reading, derived from a Melanotaenia goldiei-like ancestor; it is most closely allied to its two co-described neighbours, M. kamaka and M. lakamora. It is most readily separated from those relatives not by hard meristics — which overlap broadly within the genus — but by its more slender build, the male body being far less deep than in either kamaka or lakamora.
The specific epithet honours Miss Paola Pierucci, who together with Heiko Bleher discovered the species during fieldwork in June 1995. The genus name combines the Greek melanos, 'black' or 'dark', with the Latin/Greek taenia (tainia), 'stripe' or 'band', a reference to the dark midlateral stripe shown by many members of the genus, which is conspicuous in this species.
Morphology
Pierucci's rainbowfish is a small, laterally compressed rainbowfish; the largest recorded specimen measured 2.5 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of about 2.5 in SL. What sets it apart from its Triton Lakes relatives is its slenderness: the body depth goes roughly 2.6 to 2.9 times into the standard length, with mature males only about 36–37% of SL in depth, against more than 42% in the deeper-bodied M. kamaka and M. lakamora. The caudal peduncle is correspondingly slimmer, and the second-dorsal and anal rays are shorter than in those neighbours. The head goes about 3.5 times into SL. As in all Melanotaenia the dorsal fin is divided into a short spiny first dorsal and a longer soft second dorsal; counts run to roughly IV–VII dorsal spines and 11–14 soft rays, with the anal fin bearing one spine and 20–24 soft rays. The jaws, vomer and palatines carry small conical teeth.
In life the male is a subtle rather than gaudy fish. The upper back is mauve to purplish with a bronze sheen, fading to white or pale mauve below, with a large violet patch set just behind the pectoral fin. A broad blackish to dark-blue midlateral stripe runs from the eye to the caudal base, about two scale rows deep, but is interrupted across the middle of the flank for six or seven vertical scale rows, where a bronze sheen breaks the line. Above the anal fin the scales carry expanded black margins that read as zig-zag lines along the lower body. The first dorsal fin is white, the second dorsal bluish, the anal dusky grey to whitish, and the caudal and pectoral fins translucent, the caudal narrowly edged in black at the base.
Females are duller and more translucent than males. The single mature female collected, 2 in SL, was shallower in the body (about 34.7% of SL) than displaying males, and lacked their somewhat elongate, pointed median fins.
Habitat
Melanotaenia pierucciae is known only from the Werfyang Creek system, a tributary network feeding the northwestern end of Lake Kamakawaiar (Kamaka), one of the Triton Lakes in the mountainous interior of West Papua, Indonesia. The type locality is a small tributary, one to two metres wide, lying roughly one to two kilometres upstream and northeast of the lake at about 361 ft elevation (3°42.6′S, 134°11.7′E). A waterfall of some twenty metres separates the creek from Lake Kamakawaiar, so the fish lives in the stream above the lake rather than in the lake proper.
Water conditions recorded at the type locality on 18 July 1995 describe a clear, slow-flowing stream running over a bottom of mud, rock and fallen leaves, with only sparse aquatic vegetation: water temperature 77 °F, pH 7.4, and conductivity around 260 µS. The fish proved common both in the main channel — four to five metres wide and one to two metres deep, crystal-clear with rapid flow — and in the slow, shallow tributary, with both watercourses threading through dense rainforest.
The species is part of a small but distinctive endemic fauna of the Triton Lakes, which the describing authors enumerated as about ten species: two atherinids, three melanotaeniids and five eleotrid gudgeons. It evolved in isolation, and its entire known world is this one small drainage.
Feeding
No direct dietary study of Melanotaenia pierucciae exists; the original description records meristics and habitat but no gut-content or feeding data, so what can be said is drawn from the genus and from the fish's habitat. Like rainbowfishes generally, it is best regarded as an opportunistic omnivore feeding in the upper and middle water column. In a clear rainforest stream over a leaf-littered bottom, the available foods would be small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae and tiny crustaceans — together with terrestrial insects falling onto the surface from the overhanging canopy, supplemented by algae and fine plant and detrital material. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with a small, invertebrate-leaning omnivore.
In captivity, rainbowfishes of this type are undemanding and accept a broad range of foods: good-quality flake and small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm and Cyclops, with some vegetable matter. Because Pierucci's rainbowfish is small, foods should be sized accordingly. As with its relatives, a varied diet with a meaningful live or frozen component would be expected to improve both condition and colour, and frequent small feedings suit a constantly active grazer better than a single large one. These husbandry notes are extrapolated from the genus; species-specific feeding data are sparse.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship and spawning in Melanotaenia pierucciae are not available; FishBase notes only that reproduction involves distinct pairing, and the original description provides no breeding-mode data beyond meristics. The account here is therefore drawn from the well-documented behaviour of the genus rather than from this species in particular.
Rainbowfishes of the genus Melanotaenia are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes that pair to spawn and provide no parental care. Males display intensely, flaring fins and intensifying colour, and in many species a flickering pale 'courtship band' or stripe flashes along the head and nape of a courting male; spawning activity typically peaks in the hours after first light. Given the modest sexual dimorphism in M. pierucciae — males somewhat deeper-bodied and with slightly elongate, pointed median fins relative to the duller, more translucent female — courtship in this species would be expected to follow the same general pattern, with a displaying male leading a receptive female into fine vegetation to spawn. Until field or aquarium observations are published, this remains a genus-level inference rather than a documented account of the species.
Breeding
No published breeding account of Melanotaenia pierucciae could be found, and the original description records nothing about its reproduction beyond the note that the species pairs to spawn. The following is therefore the standard pattern for the genus, offered as the best available guide rather than as observed fact for this fish.
Melanotaenia rainbowfishes are continuous or near-continuous spawners under good conditions, depositing small, adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or from synthetic spawning mops. A female typically releases a few eggs each day over an extended period rather than a single large clutch. The eggs hatch after roughly a week to ten days at normal tropical temperatures, the time shortening with warmth, and because the adults offer no care and will eat eggs and fry, breeders harvest the mops or eggs to a separate rearing container. The tiny fry hang near the surface at first and need very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population-doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the generally prolific reproduction of the genus. Whether M. pierucciae has been bred in captivity at all is not something the cached sources confirm; data here are genus-level and sparse for the species itself.
In the aquarium
Pierucci's rainbowfish is rare in the aquarium hobby, and detailed husbandry experience with it is correspondingly thin; the notes below combine the few species facts with the general requirements of small Melanotaenia. FishBase flags the species as harmless and of aquarium interest, and at under 2.5 in it is a small, peaceful, active schooling fish that should be kept in a group rather than singly, so that males display and stay in colour.
The key to keeping it well lies in its origin. This is a fish of a clear, gently warm rainforest stream — recorded at about 77 °F, pH 7.4 and a moderate conductivity of around 260 µS — so neutral, not-too-hard water in the mid-20s Celsius reflects its natural conditions, and very soft, acidic blackwater would be inappropriate. A planted tank with open swimming space and some gentle current would suit it, with similarly small, peaceful tankmates that will not outcompete it at feeding. As an active, schooling species it appreciates a long, open swimming lane more than great volume.
Because the species is so seldom kept, aquarists encountering it should treat its requirements as provisional and watch the fish rather than trust generic numbers. Its colours are subtler than those of its showy relatives, and like other rainbowfishes the males take time and good conditions to develop their best appearance.
Conservation
Melanotaenia pierucciae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 5 December 2019 (Red List version 2025-2). FishBase additionally rates the species as having low vulnerability to fishing pressure (about 10 on a 100-point scale) and high biological resilience, with a population-doubling time of under fifteen months.
The Least Concern listing should, however, be read against the species' biology. M. pierucciae is a narrow endemic known from a single small creek system feeding one of the Triton Lakes, part of a tight cluster of species found nowhere else. A range that restricted offers little buffer against localised threats — habitat disturbance, deforestation of the surrounding rainforest catchment, or the introduction of non-native fishes, all of which have damaged other West Papuan rainbowfish populations. The species' remoteness and the limestone-basin isolation that produced it are presently its main protections.
For aquarists, the broader lesson of the Vogelkop and Triton rainbowfishes applies here too: captive breeding of rainbowfishes both maintains them outside their fragile native ranges and reduces collecting pressure on small wild populations. So little is known about this species in the wild or in captivity that further documentation of its range and status would itself be a conservation contribution.
