Melanotaenia rumberponensis is a small, sharply striped rainbowfish described in 2015 from the Bird's Head (Vogelkop) region of Indonesian West Papua and named for Rumberpon Island, where it was found. Among a crowd of look-alike New Guinea rainbowfishes, it is recognised by a continuous black midlateral band roughly three scales wide running from behind the eye to the base of the tail. It is known only from a single swamp-and-creek site in primary forest, yet the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia rumberponensis was formally described in 2015 by Kadarusman, Ogistira and Pouyaud as part of a larger study of the rainbowfish fauna of the Bird's Head Region of West Papua, Indonesia. The full account appeared in the paper by Nugraha and colleagues, 'Eight new species of rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae) from the Birds Head Region, West Papua, Indonesia,' published in the journal Cybium (volume 39, issue 2, pages 99–130). It sits in Melanotaenia, the largest genus of the family Melanotaeniidae, and has stayed there; because it was originally described in that genus, no parenthetical authority is used.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, recording it as Melanotaenia rumberponensis. The specific epithet is a toponym from Rumberpon Island, where the type material was collected, with the Latinised suffix -ensis meaning 'belonging to' or 'originating from.' The genus name combines the Greek melan, black or dark, with taenia, band or stripe — a nod to the dark lateral band found across the group, and one that suits this species well given its bold midlateral band.

The description separated M. rumberponensis from other rainbowfishes of the Bird's Head region by a combination of colour-pattern and meristic characters rather than any single standout feature. That is the usual situation in this genus, where counts overlap broadly between species. Its black band and its narrow geography place it within this regional radiation of close relatives.

Morphology

Melanotaenia rumberponensis is a small rainbowfish, reaching about 3 in in standard length in the type material; this figure rests on the type specimen and may be revised as more individuals are examined. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with a body depth reported at roughly 30 to 33 percent of standard length, giving it a slimmer profile than the deep-bodied rainbowfishes of the hobby such as Boeseman's.

The stripe is what names the fish. A continuous black midlateral band, about three scales wide, runs from the upper edge of the preopercle — just behind the eye — straight back to the base of the caudal fin. Unlike some congeners, it carries no dark stripe along the margins of the anal and dorsal fins, and that combination is enough to separate it from other Bird's Head rainbowfishes. Meristic counts from the original description include a divided dorsal fin (the first dorsal with four to five spines, the second with one spine and 13 to 14 rays), an anal fin with one spine and 21 to 23 rays, 34 to 35 lateral-line scales, 16 to 18 predorsal scales, 14 to 16 cheek scales, and 18 gill rakers.

Data on live coloration and sexual differences are thin for this species, known as it is from very few specimens. Male rainbowfishes generally grow deeper-bodied and more intensely coloured than females, but the published account does not describe breeding males in any detail, so treat that as inference from the genus rather than confirmed fact for M. rumberponensis.

Habitat

Melanotaenia rumberponensis is, as far as is known, found only at its type locality in the Bird's Head (Vogelkop) region of West Papua, on or near Rumberpon Island. The collection site is a swamp drained by a small creek through primary forest. The bottom is muddy and the water is thick with aquatic plants — the still to slow-moving, vegetated, blackwater-influenced habitat where many small New Guinea rainbowfishes turn up.

The species is classed as freshwater and benthopelagic, living in the middle and lower reaches of the water column rather than strictly at the surface or bottom, and as tropical in its climate. Because it has been recorded from only this one swamp-and-creek system, almost everything known about its ecology comes from that single site; detailed measurements of temperature, pH and hardness specific to this locality have not been published in the sources at hand.

The forest setting and muddy, vegetation-rich water suggest soft, warm, slightly acidic conditions typical of lowland primary-forest swamps in the region, but in the absence of recorded field chemistry for this species these remain reasonable expectations rather than documented values.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study has been published for Melanotaenia rumberponensis specifically. FishBase models its trophic level at approximately 2.9 and treats it as an omnivore, which is consistent with what is known of rainbowfishes as a group: they are opportunistic feeders that take small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae and small crustaceans, along with algae and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces.

In a forest swamp with a muddy bottom and heavy vegetation, a fish like this would work the invertebrates among the plants and the organic and algal film on submerged surfaces, with insects dropping onto the water adding to the mix. That picture comes from the genus and the modelled trophic position, not from gut contents examined in this species.

Databases note aquarium potential, but this is not a hobby fixture, and no captive feeding notes exist for it. In a tank it would default to the standard rainbowfish diet of varied small foods.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in detail for Melanotaenia rumberponensis. Melanotaenia rainbowfishes are, as a rule, egg-scattering plant spawners with no parental care, breeding in vegetated shallows, the males flaring colour to court females and doing most of their work in the hours after dawn. The dense vegetation at this species' type locality would give them the spawning substrate that mode needs.

Beyond that, the courtship signals, spawning season and male display of M. rumberponensis go unrecorded in the available sources. Anything firmer would need field observation or captive breeding reports, and neither exists. The safe statement is that the species almost certainly follows the rainbowfish template; the particulars are simply undescribed.

Breeding

There are no published captive-breeding accounts for Melanotaenia rumberponensis in the sources consulted, and the species is not established in the aquarium trade in the way that hobby staples such as Boeseman's or the dwarf neon rainbowfish are. What can be said is inferential, based on the consistent breeding biology of the genus.

Melanotaenia rainbowfishes typically deposit small, adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with a female releasing a few eggs at a time over many days rather than a single large clutch. Eggs of the genus generally hatch after roughly a week to a couple of weeks depending on temperature, and the tiny surface-hugging fry require very small first foods. The adults offer no parental care and will consume their own eggs and fry, so any captive breeding would follow the standard practice of removing eggs or spawning media to a separate rearing container.

Whether M. rumberponensis breeds as readily as its better-known relatives is simply not documented. Read the breeding notes above as expectations for the genus, not observations of this species.

In the aquarium

Melanotaenia rumberponensis is noted in databases as having aquarium potential, and it is rated harmless with a low vulnerability to fishing pressure, but it is not a fish that circulates in the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity. Practical husbandry information specific to this species has therefore not been published, and any guidance is extrapolated from the care of other small New Guinea rainbowfishes.

By that template, a small, active, shoaling rainbowfish like this should do best kept in a group, in a planted tank with open swimming room, stable warm tropical temperatures and good water quality. Its forest-swamp origin — muddy bottom, dense vegetation, blackwater-influenced creek — points to soft, slightly acidic, warm water, though that is read off the habitat rather than from anyone's tank.

With no confirmed care parameters to lean on, the honest line is this: a scientifically described species that is rarely seen, not an established aquarium fish. A keeper would be working from rainbowfish first principles, not a tested care sheet.

Conservation

Melanotaenia rumberponensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. It is known from a single swamp-and-creek locality, so the Least Concern call reflects the absence of documented major threats and its position in a remote, forested part of the Bird's Head region — not evidence of a large or widespread population.

The central conservation fact about this fish is its extremely restricted known range: a narrowly endemic species recorded from one site has, by definition, little geographic buffer against habitat change, and any degradation of its primary-forest swamp habitat — through logging, drainage, or the introduction of non-native fishes that have harmed other West Papuan rainbowfishes — could affect it disproportionately. The Least Concern listing should therefore be read alongside that fragility, not as evidence of abundance.

It has low fishing vulnerability and no significant trade pressure, so collection is not a current concern. Continued protection of the forest swamps of the Rumberpon Island area is the most direct way to safeguard the species, and further survey work would help establish whether its true range extends beyond the single locality from which it is so far known.
