The Sahul rainbowfish is a dwarf member of the genus Melanotaenia — a small, deep-bodied fish, barely 2 in long, marked by a series of fine black stripes running back along a silvery body and a small red-to-orange spot high on the gill cover. For decades it was hidden in plain sight, lumped under the widely kept Melanotaenia maccullochi until a 2019 revision split that single name into three species. Its scientific name nods to Sahul, the Pleistocene supercontinent that once joined Australia and New Guinea: the fish's range straddles both, from the tip of Cape York and the Torres Strait islands across to southern New Guinea, a distribution that makes sense only as a relic of that vanished land bridge.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia sahulensis was described in 2019 by Michael Hammer, Gerald Allen, Karen Martin, Mark Adams and Peter Unmack, in a Zootaxa paper titled 'Two new species of dwarf rainbowfishes from northern Australia and southern New Guinea' (Zootaxa 4701(3): 201–234). The type locality is the Pahoturi River at Sigabadu in southern New Guinea, near 9°14.75'S, 142°44.05'E, in shallow water under a metre deep. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia sahulensis Hammer, Allen, Martin, Adams & Unmack, 2019; because it was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The description resolved a long-standing muddle. In most publications before 2019 this fish was identified as Melanotaenia maccullochi, the well-known dwarf rainbowfish of the aquarium hobby. The 2019 revision showed that what had passed for a single wide-ranging species was in fact a complex, and split it into three, with M. sahulensis covering the eastern Cape York and southern New Guinea populations. Diagnosis rests on a combination of meristics, body proportions and the details of the fin colour pattern rather than any single character, since these features overlap broadly across the dwarf rainbowfishes.

The specific epithet sahulensis refers to Sahul — the Pleistocene continent formed when low sea levels joined Australia and New Guinea into one landmass. The name captures the species' split modern range across both, which is best explained as a legacy of that former connection. The authors also intended it as a tribute to ANGFA, the Australia New Guinea Fishes Association, whose journal is titled Fishes of Sahul. The genus name Melanotaenia combines the Greek melanos, 'black', and tainia, 'band' or 'stripe', for the dark lateral striping characteristic of the group.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf rainbowfish. Wild adults are small — the largest measured wild fish reached only about 1.5 in standard length, with captive Skull Creek stock growing somewhat larger, to roughly 2 in SL and around 2.5 in total length; FishBase lists a maximum of about 2 in SL. The body is very deep for its length, the body depth measuring about 2.6 to 3.7 times in standard length (mean around 3.0), giving the fish a stocky, almost diamond-shaped profile typical of the genus in miniature.

The ground colour is silvery-white to greyish-brown, marked by a series of roughly seven or eight fine black stripes running lengthwise along the pale lower body. The head is brownish-grey with greyish lips that sometimes carry a hint of yellow or orange, the iris is silvery, and a small red-to-orange spot sits on the upper part of the gill cover. The dorsal and anal fins are tricoloured: a broad dark submarginal band separates a narrow white-to-orange-red margin from a yellow-to-orange zone beneath, a pattern most vivid in nuptial males.

Meristic counts from the original description are consistent within the genus: dorsal fin with two parts (the spinous portion with five to seven spines, the soft portion with seven to ten rays, mode eight); a single anal spine followed by fifteen to seventeen soft rays (mode sixteen); 31 to 34 lateral scales (mode 33; some counts give 30 to 34); 32 to 35 vertebrae (mode 34); and 14 to 18 gill rakers.

Habitat

Melanotaenia sahulensis is a lowland freshwater fish of floodplain country. It is found in large lateral floodplain systems and in small swampy creeks, including dune lakes with dense cover and lily lagoons. In the Australian part of its range it occupies small streams, Pandanus swamp and lily-fringed lagoons, and it is most frequently encountered in acid waters. During non-flood periods the water it lives in is typically clear, with ample cover from log debris and aquatic vegetation.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic in tropical freshwater, occurring at depths of zero to about one metre, with a reported pH range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 — an acid-to-neutral preference that matches the field observations. Dense structure — submerged wood, marginal plants, floating lily cover — seems to matter, giving the small fish refuge and foraging surfaces.

The distribution spans the former Sahul land bridge. In Australia it ranges across northeastern Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait — from the Jardine River and the Bamaga area, through the Shelburne Bay area, south to Scrubby Creek, and including Moa Island in the Torres Strait, all in Queensland. In New Guinea it occurs across the south-centre, from the Pahoturi to the Bensbach river systems, including the mid-Fly River, and west to the Merauke area of Indonesian West Papua. The range therefore takes in parts of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Melanotaenia sahulensis are sparse, but its trophic level is estimated at around 2.9, placing it as an omnivore feeding low in the food web, consistent with rainbowfishes generally. Fish of this group are opportunistic feeders of the upper and middle water column, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and insects fallen to the surface — alongside algae and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces.

The vegetated, wood-strewn water it favours offers the mix of small invertebrate prey and grazeable algal and detrital surfaces such a generalist exploits. A small fish in cover-rich water picks food from plants, leaf litter and the surface rather than chasing prey in the open.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the standard rainbowfish fare: good-quality flake and small pellets sized for a small mouth, together with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and small bloodworm. As with its relatives, a varied diet that includes a live or frozen component supports the best colour and breeding condition; small, frequent feedings suit an active little grazer better than one large meal.

Mating

As an egg-laying rainbowfish, Melanotaenia sahulensis is a plant-spawner that provides no parental care, and like its relatives it is best understood as a more-or-less continuous spawner under favourable conditions rather than a strictly seasonal one. Sexual dimorphism is clear and is most useful in distinguishing the sexes: the male's dorsal and anal fin rays extend well beyond the middle of the caudal peduncle, while in females these fins reach only about midway, giving males the longer, more flowing finnage typical of courting Melanotaenia.

Breeding males intensify in colour, showing more prominent black stripes and brighter, more saturated fins, the dark submarginal fin bands and the red-orange gill spot standing out most strongly. Across the genus this is the visual currency of courtship: displaying males flash colour and flare fins to draw receptive females and to face down rivals.

Field-specific accounts of spawning in this newly described species are limited, so much of what can be said about its courtship is inferred from the well-documented behaviour of closely related dwarf rainbowfishes. In those species, males stake out small display areas, court most vigorously in the morning, and lead females into fine cover to spawn — behaviour the structure-rich habitats of M. sahulensis would readily support.

Breeding

Direct breeding records for Melanotaenia sahulensis under its own name remain thin, since the species was only recognised in 2019, but it is already established in the aquarium hobby through captive-bred populations such as the Skull Creek strain, which indicates it breeds reliably in captivity. Its biology — small adult size, high resilience, and a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months — points to a fish that reproduces readily and frequently when conditions suit.

Like other dwarf rainbowfishes, it can be expected to spawn as an egg-scatterer over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, with females releasing small numbers of adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from the spawning medium over a period of days rather than in a single clutch. Because the adults offer no care and will eat eggs and fry, breeders typically transfer the eggs or mops to a separate rearing container, as is standard practice for the genus.

The fry are tiny and hang near the surface at first, requiring very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers or commercial liquid fry food — before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake. Data on incubation time and fry growth specific to this species are sparse; the figures hobbyists rely on are drawn from its close relatives in the maccullochi complex, and prospective breeders should treat them as a guide rather than a measured fact for M. sahulensis.

In the aquarium

The Sahul rainbowfish is a small, peaceful, active schooling fish well suited to community aquariums, and it has reached the hobby largely as captive-bred stock following its 2019 description. As a dwarf species reaching only around 2 in, it does not need the long swimming lanes that larger rainbowfishes demand, but it is still a sociable shoaler that shows best in a group of six or more, where males display against one another and hold their brightest colour.

Water conditions should reflect its origins in acid-to-neutral lowland habitats: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water suits it, with a pH in the range of roughly 5.5 to 7.0 reported for the species and warm tropical temperatures. A well-planted tank with cover — fine-leaved plants, wood, and some surface structure echoing the lily lagoons and swampy creeks it comes from — settles the fish and draws out the morning displays, while a darker substrate helps its understated silver-and-stripe colouring stand out.

Tankmates should be similarly small, peaceful and not so boisterous as to outcompete a dwarf rainbowfish at feeding time: small rasboras, peaceful tetras, smaller barbs and other gentle community fish make natural companions. It is hardy and undemanding once settled, breeds readily, and stays small enough for a modest planted tank — a Sahul-region rainbowfish that doesn't need a big tank to look its best.

Conservation

Melanotaenia sahulensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 6 December 2019 (Hammer, Allen & Kadarusman, 2020; e.T163435979A163435986). The rating reflects a species with a fairly broad distribution across southern New Guinea and northeastern Australia and no evidence of major range-wide decline, in contrast to several narrowly endemic rainbowfishes that carry threatened listings.

The species occupies a range of lowland floodplain and swamp habitats across three countries — Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia — and its high biological resilience, with a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months, gives it the capacity to absorb localised losses. A wide footprint and a fast-reproducing population, rather than dependence on a single vulnerable lake or stream, are what underpin the Least Concern listing.

The species is taken for the ornamental aquarium trade, but because it is now bred in captivity — the Skull Creek strain being a notable example — much of the hobby demand can be met without pressure on wild stocks. As a generally harmless small fish of no commercial food-fishery interest, its main conservation consideration is the broader health of the floodplain and swamp systems it inhabits across the former Sahul region.
