The Senckenberg rainbowfish is one of a handful endemic to the Aru Islands, a low archipelago off the south-western coast of New Guinea. A small, greenish-brown fish marked by a faint dark-blue midlateral stripe and a small red spot on the gill cover, it was described by Max Weber in 1911 and named for the Senckenberg natural-history society of Frankfurt. For most of the next century it was known from little more than its type material, and it was not formally redescribed until 2015, as part of a wider revision of the Aru Islands rainbowfishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia senckenbergiana was described by the German-Dutch zoologist Max Carl Wilhelm Weber in 1911, with the original spelling senckenbergianus. The description appeared in the Abhandlungen der Senckenbergischen Naturforschenden Gesellschaft, the journal of the Senckenberg natural-history society in Frankfurt, Germany — the source of the specific epithet. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Melanotaenia senckenbergiana (Weber, 1911); the authority is parenthetical because the species was originally placed in a different genus and later moved to Melanotaenia, where it now sits within the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes of the order Atheriniformes.

The species was poorly known for much of the twentieth century, resting largely on Weber's original material. It was formally redescribed by Gerald R. Allen, Renny K. Hadiaty, Peter J. Unmack and Mark V. Erdmann in 2015, in a revision of the rainbowfishes of the Aru Islands published in aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology, which also described five new species from the archipelago and redescribed the related M. patoti. As with most species of Melanotaenia, M. senckenbergiana is distinguished from its relatives more by colour pattern and geography than by hard meristic characters, which overlap broadly across the genus.

Morphology

Melanotaenia senckenbergiana is a small rainbowfish, recorded at up to about 2.5 in standard length in males and around 2.5 in in females. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed and carries the family's characteristic divided dorsal fin — a short anterior portion followed by a longer posterior one. Adult males develop a moderately deep body, with the greatest body depth reported at roughly 36 percent of standard length. Meristic counts from the redescription give four to six dorsal spines and eleven to fifteen dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine with twenty to twenty-three anal soft rays, thirteen to fifteen pectoral rays, thirty-four to thirty-six lateral-line scales, and seventeen to eighteen total gill rakers on the first arch.

In life the fish is greenish-brown along the back, grading to silvery white or pale yellow on the belly. A dark blue midlateral stripe, one to two scale rows wide, runs from the rear of the eye to the base of the caudal fin, though it is often faint or broken along the middle of the body. On the operculum (gill cover) sits a prominent red spot, smaller than the pupil. As usual in rainbowfishes, colour peaks in dominant, displaying males and stays far more subdued in females and subordinate fish.

Habitat

Melanotaenia senckenbergiana is endemic to the Aru Islands of Indonesia, where it is recorded from Trangan (Trangan) Island and Kobroor Island. Despite their proximity to New Guinea, the Aru Islands form a distinct freshwater setting, and the species is not known from the New Guinea mainland. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical lowland waters.

According to the 2015 redescription, the species inhabits creeks and small rivers flowing through a range of settings: primary rainforest, areas of secondary growth and village gardens, and tree-lined creeks running through relatively open savannah. In these waters it occurs alongside other Aru rainbowfishes — variously syntopic with Melanotaenia albimarginata, M. aruensis, or M. patoti — as well as hardyhead silversides (Craterocephalus), gudgeons (Mogurnda), mouth almighties (Glossamia), and gobies (Glossogobius). Detailed water-chemistry measurements for its specific localities are not well documented in the sources at hand, so precise temperature and pH figures should be treated as sparse rather than firmly established.

Feeding

Melanotaenia senckenbergiana is an omnivore, with a trophic level estimated at about 2.9. As in rainbowfishes generally, the natural diet is expected to combine small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects taken at or near the surface — with algae and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces. Species-specific gut-content studies are not available in the cached sources, so this account rests on the genus's well-documented feeding ecology rather than direct observation of this fish.

The species is rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade, and dedicated captive husbandry notes are correspondingly thin. Were it kept, it would be expected to behave like its better-known relatives: an active, upper- and mid-water feeder that readily accepts good-quality flake and small pellets supplemented with live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, with frequent small feedings suiting its constant grazing habit.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship in Melanotaenia senckenbergiana appears in the available sources, and the following draws on the consistent reproductive pattern documented across the genus rather than on direct study of this species. Rainbowfishes of the genus Melanotaenia are egg-scattering, plant-associated spawners in which males compete for and court females through intense colour displays. Dominant males establish display areas and flare their fins, flashing the body to bring out maximum colour, with the operculum's red spot and the midlateral stripe likely featuring in any such display in this species.

A characteristic courtship signal across rainbowfishes is a flickering pale band that flashes along the head and nape of a displaying male, with spawning peaking in the early hours after first light. Whether M. senckenbergiana follows this in every particular is not documented, but there is little reason to expect it to depart from the conserved reproductive behaviour of its close Aru Islands relatives.

Breeding

Breeding behaviour specific to Melanotaenia senckenbergiana is not documented in the cached sources; this section therefore describes the well-established pattern for the genus, which the species is expected to share. Rainbowfishes are continuous spawners under good conditions, depositing small, adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops. Rather than producing a single large clutch, a female typically releases a few eggs each day over an extended spawning period.

The adhesive eggs of Melanotaenia species generally hatch after roughly a week to twelve days, the incubation time shortening with warmth, and the adults offer no parental care — they will readily consume their own eggs and fry, so breeders separate eggs or mops to a rearing container. The tiny fry hang near the surface at first and require very small first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species' medium resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, is consistent with this steady, low-volume but persistent reproductive strategy.

In the aquarium

In aquarium terms this is an obscure fish. FishBase notes only potential aquarium or minor fisheries interest, and it never became a fixture of the ornamental trade the way showier rainbowfishes such as M. boesemani did. There is little published hobbyist experience to draw on, so any keeping notes are extrapolated from similar small Melanotaenia rather than tested against this species.

On that basis it should suit the standard rainbowfish setup: a peaceful, active schooling fish kept in a group, given a long tank with open swimming space and some planting, in warm, well-filtered water. Its small adult size — around 2.5–3 in — makes it less demanding of tank length than the larger rainbowfishes. Like its relatives, the males colour up best when kept together and made to display against one another. The species is harmless to humans and of low fishing vulnerability.

Conservation

Melanotaenia senckenbergiana is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects a species that, while narrowly endemic to the Aru Islands, is not currently considered to face imminent threats severe enough to warrant a higher category, and it carries an estimated medium resilience with a population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years.

That said, a species restricted to creeks and small rivers on two islands within a single archipelago has inherently limited range, and its fortunes are tied to the integrity of Aru Islands freshwater habitats. The fish occurs across a range of settings from primary rainforest to garden and savannah creeks, which suggests some tolerance of human-modified surroundings, but localized habitat change could still affect it disproportionately given the confined geography. The species is not a significant target of collection for the aquarium trade, which removes one pressure that has weighed heavily on more sought-after rainbowfishes.
