The northern rainbowfish is the rainbowfish of Australia's Top End — a hardy, adaptable silver-and-gold schooler that turns up in almost every kind of fresh water across the Northern Territory, from clear stream pools to muddy reservoirs and seasonal swamps. Long confused with its relatives in the Melanotaenia splendida and M. australis complex, its rank is genuinely contested — FishBase still lists it as a valid species, while the Catalog of Fishes now treats it as a synonym of M. splendida — but it remains a familiar, if comparatively quiet, presence in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia solata was described by W. R. Taylor in 1964 from the Emerald River on Groote Eylandt, Northern Territory, Australia (holotype AMS IB.5236). The name was coined in the genus Melanotaenia and has never been moved, so the authority carries no parentheses: Melanotaenia solata Taylor, 1964. It belongs to the genus Melanotaenia, the largest genus of the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes, which radiate across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia.

Its validity is, however, genuinely contested. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (species id 13882; updated 2026) currently treats Melanotaenia solata as a junior synonym of Melanotaenia splendida (Peters 1866), following Pusey et al. (2017); earlier authorities had alternately recognised it as valid (Allen et al. 2002, 2006) or synonymised it with M. australis (Larson et al. 2013). FishBase (speccode 62767) and ITIS (TSN 630795), by contrast, still list it as a valid species. The northern Australian rainbowfishes of this general appearance have long been lumped within the wide-ranging M. splendida complex, and the placement of 'solata' has shifted repeatedly as authors weigh colour, morphometrics, and molecular data differently.

As is usual within Melanotaenia, M. solata is distinguished from its relatives more by colour, body proportions, and geography than by clean meristic breaks, since fin-ray and scale counts overlap broadly across the genus. The accepted English name is the northern rainbowfish, a reference to its distribution across Australia's northern (Top End) drainages.

Morphology

Melanotaenia solata is a moderate-sized rainbowfish, reaching about 4.5 in standard length in males, with a common length closer to 3 in; females and most aquarium specimens are smaller. The body is elongate and strongly compressed in cross-section — less deep-bodied than the showiest aquarium rainbowfishes such as M. boesemani — and carries the family's characteristic divided dorsal fin, a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Body depth increases with size and is greater in males: in specimens over about 2 in SL the greatest body depth runs roughly 30.5–36.2% of standard length in females and 32.9–41% in males.

Meristic characters fall within the typical Melanotaenia range: 5–7 dorsal spines and 9–12 dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine with 18–21 anal soft rays, 10–13 horizontal scale rows, 31–36 vertical scale rows, 14–22 predorsal scales, and 9–13 cheek scales. A published length–weight relationship gives the Bayesian parameters a = 0.00389 and b = 3.12 (total length in cm).

In colour it is one of the genus's quieter members — silvery to golden, with fine longitudinal stripes tracing the scale rows and fins that can flush yellow to orange in a well-conditioned, displaying male. Colour intensity rides on mood and condition: it peaks in a dominant male in display and washes out in stressed or subordinate fish.

Habitat

Melanotaenia solata is endemic to northern Australia, where it is one of the most widespread and habitat-tolerant rainbowfishes. FishBase characterises its habitat as highly variable, spanning rivers, creeks, swamps, marshy lagoons, lakes, and reservoirs. Rather than tying itself to one water type, the species turns up across the full range of fresh waters in the Top End drainages of the Northern Territory.

Within flowing-water habitats the fish typically forms aggregations at or near the surface of deeper pools, especially where aquatic vegetation or submerged log debris provides cover. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species occupying the upper and middle water column. Its trophic level is estimated at about 2.9.

Because it ranges across a tropical monsoonal region with a pronounced wet and dry season, M. solata experiences strongly seasonal water conditions — habitats that expand into floodplains and swamps during the wet and contract to permanent pools and reservoirs through the dry. Precise field measurements of temperature, pH, and hardness across its range were not captured in the sources consulted here, so specific water-chemistry figures for the wild habitat are treated as data-sparse.

Feeding

Like rainbowfishes generally, the northern rainbowfish is an opportunistic omnivore feeding mainly in the upper and middle water column, consistent with its estimated trophic level of around 2.9. In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods: good-quality flake and small pellets, together with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Cyclops, and some vegetable matter. A varied diet with a live or frozen component improves both colour and breeding condition, as it does across the genus.

Mating

Detailed field observations of courtship in M. solata specifically were not available in the sources consulted, so the account here is generalised from the well-documented and conservative reproductive biology shared across Australian Melanotaenia, to which this species belongs.

Rainbowfishes of this group are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes with no parental care, and they tend to spawn over an extended period rather than in a single seasonal burst. Males are social and competitive: dominant males court females with heightened colour and fin displays, and many rainbowfishes flash a pale 'courtship band' along the head and nape when displaying, the behaviour most vivid in the morning hours after first light.

Display is at its strongest when several males are kept together, so the species is most colourful — and most likely to spawn — in a group rather than as an isolated pair. Specific quantitative courtship data for M. solata are treated as sparse.

Breeding

Melanotaenia solata is, in the manner typical of Australian rainbowfishes, an egg-scattering plant-spawner: conditioned adults deposit small, adhesive eggs that hang by fine filaments from fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic spawning mops. Spawning generally occurs over many days, with a female releasing a few eggs at a time rather than a single large clutch, and the adults offer no parental care — they will eat their own eggs, so breeders typically harvest the mops or eggs to a separate rearing container.

As with related species, the eggs hatch after roughly one to two weeks depending on temperature, and the tiny fry hang near the surface at first, requiring very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake. The species' medium resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years, is consistent with this steady, protracted spawning strategy.

Species-specific clutch sizes, hatching intervals, and growth rates for M. solata were not captured numerically in the sources consulted, so figures are kept general and conservative rather than stated as precise values.

In the aquarium

The northern rainbowfish is an active, peaceful, sociable schooling fish kept in the aquarium hobby, where it is best maintained in a group of six or more so that males display against one another and stay coloured up. It is a strong, restless swimmer that benefits from a long, open swimming lane, in the manner of rainbowfishes generally. Adrian Tappin's standard hobbyist monograph on rainbowfishes covers M. solata as one of the Australian species kept and bred in captivity, and it appears in community rainbowfish tanks alongside other Top End Melanotaenia.

Reflecting its origins in the often hard, alkaline waters of northern Australia, the species suits neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water rather than the soft-water defaults sometimes assumed for tropical fish, kept at warm tropical temperatures broadly in the low-to-upper 20s Celsius typical of Australian Melanotaenia. Precise tested aquarium parameters for this species were not captured in the sources consulted, so these ranges are given as conservative genus-level guidance rather than measured species values; stable conditions and good filtration matter more than hitting exact numbers.

Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and confident enough not to be outcompeted at feeding — other rainbowfishes, larger tetras, and peaceful barbs and rasboras are natural companions. The species is hardy and adaptable — no surprise, given the range of wild habitats it occupies.

Conservation

Melanotaenia solata has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List: the FishBase Red List Status field (Version 2025-2, Global) reports it as Not Evaluated, and no dedicated species assessment page could be located. It is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and CMS.

The absence of a formal listing should not be read as cause for concern. The species is widespread and habitat-tolerant across the Top End of the Northern Territory, occupying everything from rivers and creeks to swamps, lagoons, lakes, and reservoirs, and it carries a low fishing-vulnerability score (about 10 on a 100-point scale) together with medium biological resilience. A broad range and flexible habitat use are what buffer a species against decline.

Much of northern Australia's freshwater habitat remains comparatively intact, and a wide-ranging generalist like this faces none of the acute, single-basin pressures that threaten narrowly endemic rainbowfishes. A formal evaluation would be needed to state its status with confidence, but the evidence points to a common, secure fish rather than a threatened one.
