Melanotaenia sylvatica was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1997, in a paper in the Revue française d'Aquariologie titled 'A new species of rainbowfish (Melanotaenia: Melanotaeniidae) from the Lake Kamu Basin, Papua New Guinea.' The type material came from the Lakekamu Basin in south-eastern Papua New Guinea, the only region from which the species is known. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority on valid fish names, records the name as Melanotaenia sylvatica Allen, 1997; because the species was described in Melanotaenia and remains there, the authority carries no parentheses.
The genus Melanotaenia is the largest in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, a group that radiates across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia within the order Atheriniformes. Among its New Guinea congeners, M. sylvatica is distinguished less by hard meristic characters — which overlap broadly across the genus — than by its small adult size, modest coloration, and its unusual ecology as a forest-stream specialist. It is one of the smaller rainbowfishes, a useful field character in a region where several Melanotaenia species may occur.
The specific epithet sylvatica derives from the Latin for 'of the forest' or 'woodland', a direct reference to the closed-canopy rainforest creeks the species inhabits. The genus name combines the Greek melas, melan- ('black' or 'dark') with the Latin taenia ('band' or 'stripe'), referring to the dark lateral band that runs along the body of many species in the group.
Morphology
Melanotaenia sylvatica is a small rainbowfish, reaching at least about 2 in in standard length according to Allen's original description and his later observations. This makes it one of the more diminutive members of a genus whose larger species can exceed 4.5 in, and the small size is consistent with its life in narrow, shaded creeks rather than open lakes or large rivers.
In body form it follows the familiar rainbowfish plan: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body bearing the family's characteristic divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — together with a separate anal fin running along much of the underside. As in other Melanotaenia, the body deepens somewhat with age, most noticeably in mature males.
Detailed coloration data for the species are sparse, and the most reliable account traces to Allen's work and the IUCN assessment that draws on it. As in the genus generally, males are the more vividly marked sex, developing stronger colour and larger median fins than the plainer females, and colour intensity is strongly mood- and condition-dependent — a displaying male flushing brighter than a subdued one. One widely circulated hobby account claims a larger size of 3–4 in and fast-flowing-stream habitat, but these figures contradict Allen's original description and FishBase; the authoritative figures of roughly 2 in standard length and slow-flowing forest creeks should be preferred.
Habitat
Melanotaenia sylvatica is endemic to the Upper Lakekamu Basin of south-eastern Papua New Guinea, roughly 118 mi north-west of Port Moresby, at elevations of about 115–394 ft. Its known range is small and tightly defined — a patch of lowland rainforest on relatively flat terrain — and that confinement is the principal reason for its threatened status.
The species lives in small, clear, slow-flowing creeks, typically only one to three metres wide, that wind through closed-canopy lowland rainforest. The streambed is mud or gravel, littered with fallen leaves, logs, and woody debris that provide cover and feeding surfaces. This is a shaded, forest-interior environment, quite unlike the open, sunlit lakes and rivers favoured by many of its congeners — hence the common name, forest rainbowfish.
Precise physico-chemical data for these creeks — temperature, pH, hardness — are not well documented in the available sources, so specific water-chemistry values are best treated as data-sparse. What is clear is that the habitat is a warm, lowland, tropical freshwater system with clear, gently moving water and abundant leaf litter, conditions consistent with shaded rainforest streams across the region.
Feeding
Like rainbowfishes generally, the forest rainbowfish is an opportunistic omnivore. Available accounts describe a diet of small aquatic invertebrates and insects, algae, and detritus — the mixed fare typical of small Melanotaenia foraging in leaf-littered creeks. Its low trophic level, estimated at around 2.9, is consistent with a diet weighted toward small invertebrates and plant or detrital material rather than active piscivory.
In its forest-creek habitat, much of the food supply is likely tied to the abundant leaf litter and woody debris on the streambed, which support aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, and to allochthonous input — terrestrial insects falling from the overhanging canopy. Algae and fine detritus grazed from submerged surfaces would round out the diet.
The species is rarely if ever kept in the aquarium hobby, so captive feeding notes are scarce. Based on the genus, it would be expected to accept the standard rainbowfish fare of good-quality flake and small pellets supplemented with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small insect larvae, fed in small amounts several times a day. In the absence of direct husbandry reports, however, such expectations remain inference from close relatives rather than documented fact.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship in Melanotaenia sylvatica are not well documented, but FishBase notes that the species forms distinct pairs during reproduction, and the genus offers a consistent and well-studied template. In Melanotaenia, males court females with intense colour displays — flaring the fins and flashing the body so that their coloration reaches maximum saturation — and many species show a flickering pale 'courtship band' that flashes along the head and nape of a displaying male.
This signalling is typically most vivid in the early morning, and spawning in the genus is concentrated in the hours after first light. A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine cover, where the pair release small numbers of eggs at a time rather than a single large clutch. In a forest-creek setting, that cover would be the submerged leaf litter, woody debris, and marginal vegetation that characterise the species' habitat.
Because males display most strongly in the presence of rivals and receptive females, courtship colour in rainbowfishes is at its peak in social groups. Whether the same dynamics govern the comparatively retiring forest rainbowfish in its narrow creeks is not specifically recorded, so the details above are drawn from the genus rather than from direct study of this species.
Breeding
Melanotaenia sylvatica is oviparous, and the genus is uniformly an egg-scattering, plant-spawning group with no parental care. Available accounts describe adhesive eggs laid on submerged vegetation or substrate, attaching by fine filaments to the spawning medium, as in rainbowfishes generally. Males court with fin and colour displays, and spawning occurs over an extended period rather than as a single event.
Following the genus, eggs are expected to hatch within roughly a week, with the free-swimming fry able to feed shortly after — though precise incubation times, egg counts, and fry-rearing details specific to M. sylvatica are not documented in the available sources and should be regarded as data-sparse. The species is assessed by the IUCN as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than fifteen months, which is consistent with the steady, drawn-out reproductive output typical of small rainbowfishes.
There are no established captive-breeding accounts for the forest rainbowfish, as it is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. Any breeding protocol would, by necessity, be extrapolated from better-known relatives such as M. boesemani or M. praecox: conditioning groups on a varied diet, providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg substrate, and removing the eggs to a separate container for rearing, since the adults offer no care and will consume their own eggs and fry.
In the aquarium
Melanotaenia sylvatica is not a fish of the aquarium hobby. It is a narrowly endemic, Endangered species known only from a small basin in Papua New Guinea, and it is not established in the ornamental trade in the way that its famous relatives — Boeseman's, neon, and dwarf rainbowfishes — are. Reliable husbandry information specific to the species is therefore minimal, and prospective keepers should treat any care recommendations as inference from the genus rather than tested practice.
If it were maintained, the species would in principle call for the standard rainbowfish setup scaled to its small size: a group of six or more kept in a well-filtered, planted tank with an open swimming lane and gentle current, fed a varied omnivorous diet. Given its origin in shaded, slow-flowing, clear forest creeks over leaf litter and gravel, a biotope approach with subdued lighting, leaf litter, and driftwood would more faithfully reflect its natural conditions than the bright, open layouts often used for lake-dwelling rainbowfishes. Specific water parameters, however, are not well documented and would have to be approached cautiously.
The point worth dwelling on is a conservation one: this is a threatened wild species with no significant captive population to draw on, so it should not be sought from the wild. The well-established, easily bred rainbowfishes already in the hobby deliver the group's colour and activity without pressure on a vulnerable population.
Conservation
Melanotaenia sylvatica is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B2ab(iii), in an assessment carried out on 6 December 2019 and published in 2020 by G. R. Allen (IUCN Red List 2020: e.T161111293A161111315). The listing reflects the species' very restricted range within the Upper Lakekamu Basin combined with an ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat.
The principal threat is commercial logging of the lowland rainforest that shades and sustains its creeks; the removal of canopy and disturbance of the catchment degrade the cool, clear, leaf-littered conditions the fish depends on. Secondary and compounding pressures include the expansion of oil-palm plantations on the coastal plain, other agriculture, sedimentation and general decline in water quality, pollution from gold mining, and the broader effects of climate change. Local expert assessment identifies logging as the more significant of these threats.
For a fish confined to one small basin, these pressures carry outsized risk: there is no large outlying population to buffer local declines, and losing habitat in even part of the range means losing a substantial fraction of the whole. The forest rainbowfish has no aquarium population to fall back on either — none of the insurance that captive breeding provides for some of its better-known relatives. In-situ protection of the Lakekamu Basin's forests is what will decide whether it survives.
