The banded rainbowfish is one of the most variable fishes in the aquarium hobby: a single species spread across the streams and waterholes of northern Australia in more than thirty distinct, river-by-river colour forms, from deep blue-and-red 'Goyder River' males to fish dressed in green, orange, or near-black. Common, hardy, and assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, it is at once a beginner's fish and a collector's obsession — the same scientific name hiding a whole gallery of regional liveries.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia trifasciata was originally described by the Swedish ichthyologist Hjalmar Rendahl in 1922. Because the species was first placed in a different genus and later moved to Melanotaenia, its authority is written in parentheses as (Rendahl, 1922). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia trifasciata, and FishBase carries it under SpecCode 22717 within the order Atheriniformes, family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes of New Guinea and Australia.

The genus name Melanotaenia combines the Greek melan, meaning black, with the Latin taenia, meaning stripe or band, a reference to the dark lateral markings characteristic of the group. The specific epithet trifasciata likewise means 'three-banded', describing the longitudinal stripes that gave the fish its older trade name of Three-striped Sunfish. In English the species is best known as the banded rainbowfish, though it is sold under a long list of regional and trade names — Jewel, Goyder River, Regal, and Three-stripe among them — that usually refer to particular colour forms rather than distinct taxa.

What sets M. trifasciata apart is how much it varies from place to place. More than thirty regional colour variants have been recognised, each tied to a particular river system, and hobbyists keep these bloodlines separate by collection locality. Because the rainbowfishes of the family hybridise readily in captivity, maintaining named locality forms — rather than mixing them — is the standard practice among serious keepers of this species.

Morphology

The banded rainbowfish is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed rainbowfish reaching a maximum of about 5 in standard length, with a common adult size closer to 3 in. Like other members of the genus it carries the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — set on a body that deepens with age, most markedly in dominant males.

Colour is the species' signature, and it never holds still. The base pattern is a row of longitudinal stripes along the flanks, but ground colour and fin markings shift from one river system to the next: some populations run to electric blue and red, others to green, orange, or sooty near-black. Mature males are the brighter sex, and a male's colours flush hard when he is displaying — far more vividly than a subordinate or stressed fish.

This river-by-river variation is why the species supports so many trade names. A 'Goyder River' banded rainbowfish and an east-coast form may look like different fishes to the eye while sharing the same scientific name and overlapping, genus-typical meristic counts. Females and juveniles of all forms are plainer than displaying males, the subdued markings and silvery-to-yellowish ground typical of sexual dimorphism across Melanotaenia.

Habitat

Melanotaenia trifasciata is endemic to Australia, occurring across the tropical north in the Northern Territory and Queensland. It lives in small streams and waterholes with clear to moderately turbid water, over bottoms of rock, gravel, or leaf litter, and is frequently found around submerged logs, branches, and well-vegetated margins. The surrounding country ranges from semi-rainforest to open grassland.

The species is strongly tied to the seasonal rhythm of the monsoonal north. During the dry season it is often abundant in partly stagnant waterholes floored with leaf litter, persisting in shrinking pools until the wet season reconnects the drainage. This tolerance of warm, sometimes oxygen-poor standing water is part of what makes the fish so hardy and widespread.

Wild water conditions span a wide range. FishBase reports the species occurring at temperatures from about 72–86 °F and at pH values from roughly 5.2 to 7.0 in the wild — that is, in soft to neutral, mildly acidic water — even though it tolerates harder, more alkaline conditions in captivity. This breadth of habitat, from clear rocky streams to leaf-littered dry-season puddles, mirrors the species' broad geographic range and its many local forms.

Feeding

Like rainbowfishes generally, the banded rainbowfish is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds in the upper and middle water column; its trophic level is estimated at about 2.9. The natural diet includes small aquatic insects and their larvae, terrestrial insects taken from the surface, and algae and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces and vegetation.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts a wide variety of foods. A good-quality flake or small pellet forms a suitable staple, supplemented with live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, Daphnia, and brine shrimp, and with some plant matter. A varied diet with a real live or frozen component improves both colour and breeding condition.

As an active, constant grazer the species does best fed small amounts several times a day rather than a single large feeding — two or three feedings daily is a common regime. Hobbyists keeping the more colourful locality forms often use colour-enhancing prepared foods to maintain the reds and blues that can fade on a monotonous flake-only diet.

Mating

The banded rainbowfish is an egg-depositing, plant-spawning species that pairs distinctly at spawning time. Males are social and competitive: in a group, mature males spar with one another in largely harmless contests, and a male's colours reach their fullest saturation when he has rivals to display against and a female to court. For this reason the fish look their best in a group rather than as an isolated pair.

During courtship a displaying male leads a receptive female toward a spawning site — fine-leaved vegetation or, in the aquarium, a spawning mop — with intensified colour and active fin-flaring. As in many rainbowfishes, this display is most vivid in the early hours of the day, and spawning activity peaks in the morning.

Because males colour up best in the presence of competitors, breeders commonly keep the species in groups with a female-skewed sex ratio — often around one male to two females — so that males display vigorously while no single female is over-harassed. This social arrangement both shows the fish at their best and keeps spawning steady.

Breeding

Melanotaenia trifasciata is a fairly straightforward rainbowfish to breed in captivity. It is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, where they hang by fine filaments from the spawning medium. Conditioning a pair or group on rich live foods beforehand brings the fish into spawning form and intensifies the males' colours.

Spawning typically runs over several days, with a female releasing a small number of eggs at a time and egg output gradually declining as the spawning period continues, rather than producing a single large clutch. The adults offer no parental care and will eat their own eggs, so breeders remove the parents — or transfer the mop — once spawning is complete.

The fry require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake. Clean, stable water is especially important during the first two months of rearing, when the fry are most vulnerable. Growth is gradual, and as with other rainbowfishes the full adult colours of the males develop slowly, well after the fish reach a sellable size.

In the aquarium

The banded rainbowfish is an active, peaceful, sociable schooling fish and an excellent choice for the community aquarium, rated as a beginner-friendly species. It is best kept in a group of six to eight or more; in smaller numbers the fish are shy and the males colour up poorly. A female-skewed ratio, often around one male to two females, brings out the best colour as males display against one another in harmless sparring.

The species is hardy and tolerant of changing conditions, which is part of its appeal. It thrives across a broad range of water chemistry — care guidance commonly cites pH from about 6.5 to 8.5 and a general hardness of roughly 8 to 25 dGH, with a temperature around 70–79 °F and a slight preference for soft, mildly acidic water reflecting its wild habitat. Stable conditions and good filtration matter more than precise numbers.

As a strong, restless swimmer the fish needs a tank with a long, open swimming lane, and as an enthusiastic jumper it requires a securely covered aquarium. A planted layout with open central swimming space and some surface movement shows the colours to best effect and encourages the morning display behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful — other rainbowfishes, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, and rasboras are natural companions. Well kept, the species lives up to around five years.

Conservation

Melanotaenia trifasciata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 15 February 2019 (Version 2025-2, global). The species is widespread across tropical northern Australia, occurs in numerous river systems and waterholes, and faces no major range-wide threat, which underpins the Least Concern listing.

The fish is harmless to humans and is used both in commercial fisheries and, far more prominently, in the aquarium trade, where it is a long-established and popular species. Because it is easy to keep and to breed, much of the trade is supplied by captive-bred stock, reducing pressure on wild populations.

The more meaningful conservation concern for this species is not extinction risk but the integrity of its many distinct, locality-specific colour forms. Each river-system variant represents a locally adapted population, and these are most at risk from hybridisation — both in the hobby, where rainbowfishes interbreed readily if mixed, and potentially in the wild where drainages are altered. Keeping named locality bloodlines pure is the practical way aquarists help preserve the diversity that makes this fish what it is.
