The Utchee rainbowfish is a small, silvery-blue rainbowfish endemic to a handful of fast-flowing coastal streams in the Wet Tropics of north Queensland, Australia. Described in 2001 and named for its type locality at Utchee Creek, it is one of the more recently recognised members of the genus Melanotaenia — and one of the more precarious. The IUCN lists it as Endangered, on the strength of a tiny natural range confined to tributaries of the North and South Johnstone Rivers.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanotaenia utcheensis was described by Katrina L. McGuigan in 2001 in the paper 'An addition to the rainbow (Melanotaeniidae) fauna of north Queensland', published in the Memoirs of the Queensland Museum (46(2): 647–655). The holotype came from Utchee Creek, a tributary of the North Johnstone River in north Queensland, and the name formally recognised a distinct rainbowfish that had circulated in the aquarium hobby and been confused with its close relatives. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanotaenia utcheensis McGuigan, 2001; because the species was described in Melanotaenia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

Melanotaenia is the largest genus in the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes — which range across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. M. utcheensis is broadly sympatric with M. eachamensis and M. splendida, and similar to them in form, so the boundaries between these north-Queensland fishes have drawn continued study; Martin & Barclay (2017) examined the species' distribution and form across the Johnstone River system. Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the fish is treated as a distinct, narrowly endemic Australian rainbowfish.

The specific epithet utcheensis is a toponym: it is formed from Utchee Creek, the type locality, with the Latin suffix -ensis ('originating from'). The genus name Melanotaenia combines the Greek melan ('black') with taenia ('stripe' or 'band'), in reference to the dark mid-lateral band seen across many members of the genus — a band that is itself a diagnostic feature of this species.

Morphology

The Utchee rainbowfish is a small, laterally compressed rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum size of about 2 in standard length (after the original description by McGuigan, 2001), while the Fishes of Australia treatment notes larger wild figures — fish up to roughly 2.5 in SL, rarely above about 2.5 in SL. Either way it is a small fish. Like other Melanotaenia it carries the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Reported meristics include 6–8 dorsal spines, 10–12 dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine, and 16–20 anal soft rays.

Colour is the most reliable way to tell it apart. The body is silvery-blue, marked by a bluish-black mid-lateral stripe that is strongest toward the rear and fades forward; narrow orange stripes follow the horizontal rows of scales along the sides, and there is often a reddish patch on the cheek. The fins range from translucent to deep red — deepest in breeding males — and the anal fin, second dorsal fin and pelvic fins carry narrow black margins.

Sexual dimorphism follows the usual genus pattern. Males are brighter and deeper-bodied, with longer pelvic, dorsal and anal fins than females; the most intense red and the strongest body sheen show up in dominant, displaying individuals. Females and juveniles are plainer.

Habitat

Melanotaenia utcheensis is endemic to the Wet Tropics of north Queensland, Australia, where it is known only from coastal tributaries of the North and South Johnstone Rivers and from tributaries of the North Johnstone River on the Atherton Tableland — including Utchee, Fisher, Rankin and Short Creeks. That tiny range is the central fact of the species' biology.

The fish lives in small freshwater streams with moderate to fast flow — typically sections of deep pools separated by short runs, with rapids and shallow riffles, over cobbles and boulders that carry little fine sediment. These are clear, well-oxygenated, flowing waters, and the species is correspondingly hardy and active.

It shares these streams with a recognisable community of other freshwater fishes, co-occurring most often with the purple-spotted gudgeon (Mogurnda adspersa) and the long-finned eel (Anguilla reinhardtii), and less commonly with the Pacific blue-eye (Pseudomugil signifer), the gudgeon Awaous acritosis, swamp eels (Ophisternon sp.), and grunters (Hephaestus sp.). Introduced guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are also present in parts of its range — one of several pressures on a fish with nowhere else to go.

Feeding

The Utchee rainbowfish is an omnivore with a relatively low trophic level (about 2.9), feeding on a mix of plant and animal material gleaned from its fast-flowing stream habitat. The diet includes filamentous algae, aquatic and terrestrial insects, micro-crustaceans, and other small invertebrates — the terrestrial part being insects that drop onto the surface from overhanging riparian vegetation.

Like rainbowfishes generally, it feeds in the middle and upper water column, taking drifting and surface food in the current and grazing algae and small invertebrates off submerged cobbles and boulders. That mix of grazing and opportunistic insectivory is what you'd expect of a small stream-dwelling Melanotaenia.

In the aquarium it should be undemanding, as its relatives are: good-quality flake and small pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, and some vegetable matter. A live or frozen component keeps colour and condition up. (Hobby husbandry data specific to this species is sparse, and these expectations follow from the well-documented genus rather than from species-specific accounts.)

Mating

Detailed reproductive observations specific to Melanotaenia utcheensis are sparse in the literature; the Fishes of Australia account notes that its biology is little known. What is recorded follows the genus: it is likely oviparous, depositing adhesive eggs onto vegetation, with no parental care.

Rainbowfishes are egg-scatterers and plant-spawners, the males holding display areas and courting females with intense colour. Here the red fins and body sheen peak in breeding males, in line with the displays seen across Melanotaenia — a dominant male flashing his colours, and in many rainbowfishes a flickering pale 'courtship stripe' along the head and nape, to draw a receptive female into fine-leaved cover.

Since the wild breeding behaviour has not been described in detail, anything beyond 'oviparous, adhesive eggs on vegetation, no parental care' would be guesswork. The genus-level pattern is well established; the species-level specifics — timing, fecundity, seasonal cues — remain to be documented.

Breeding

Captive breeding of the Utchee rainbowfish has not been documented in the detail available for popular aquarium rainbowfishes such as M. boesemani, and species-specific spawning data is sparse. The species is understood to be oviparous, scattering small adhesive eggs that attach to fine-leaved plants or other submerged surfaces.

By analogy with better-studied congeners, breeding should follow the standard Melanotaenia routine: conditioned adults spawning over fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, the female releasing a few eggs at a time over many days rather than one clutch, the adhesive eggs hanging by fine filaments from the spawning medium. Adults of the genus eat their own eggs and give no care, so breeders move the eggs or mops to a separate container; the very small fry need tiny first foods before they can take newly hatched brine shrimp.

All of that is drawn from the genus and from the likely-oviparous, adhesive-egg mode. Precise figures for incubation time, fecundity and fry development in M. utcheensis specifically are not available, and are not asserted here.

In the aquarium

The Utchee rainbowfish has a history in the trade — its circulation among hobbyists actually predated and prompted its formal description — but it is far less commonly kept than mainstream rainbowfishes, and dedicated husbandry literature is thin. As a small, active, shoaling stream fish it should want what its relatives want: a group of six or more, open swimming space, some water movement, the males displaying at one another and holding their best colour.

Its home water — clear, moderate-to-fast streams over cobbles and boulders, with deep pools and shallow runs — argues for good filtration, well-oxygenated water and stable conditions. The recorded resilience and tolerance of flow suggest a hardy aquarium fish, though specific tolerances for the species are not well recorded.

Given the Endangered listing and the very small wild range, keep captive-bred stock and don't add to collecting pressure on the wild population. As a north-Queensland endemic it draws particular interest from specialist rainbowfish associations such as ANGFA, which maintain and document Australian rainbowfishes in captivity.

Conservation

Melanotaenia utcheensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii); the assessment was carried out in 2019. The listing turns on the restricted range: the fish is known only from a small set of streams in the North and South Johnstone River drainages of the Wet Tropics, an area small enough that its extent and area of occupancy fall within the Endangered thresholds, with a continuing decline in habitat quality.

A narrowly endemic stream fish has little slack against local pressures. Non-native fishes in its range — guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are recorded in parts of its habitat — and degradation of its small catchment streams hit hard when there is no large outlying population to buffer a local decline. The species is neither CITES- nor CMS-listed.

Keeping the fish in the hobby, especially through specialist associations, has some insurance value, and captive-bred rather than wild-caught stock keeps collecting pressure off the wild population. But the long-term security of M. utcheensis comes down to the state of its small north-Queensland streams.
