Pelangia mbutaensis is the sole member of its genus and one of the least-known rainbowfishes in the family Melanotaeniidae — a small, modestly coloured fish described by Gerald Allen in 1998 from a single swampy basin behind Etna Bay in Indonesian West Papua. Where most rainbowfishes earn their name with flashing reds and blues, this one is a subdued yellowish-tan creature whose interest lies less in its appearance than in its biology: a monotypic genus, narrowly endemic to one tannin-stained forest creek, and assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

The Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen described Pelangia mbutaensis in 1998, in a paper titled 'A new genus and species of Rainbowfish (Melanotaeniidae) from fresh waters of Irian Jaya, Indonesia,' published in the Revue Française d'Aquariologie (25(1–2): 11–16). Allen erected a new genus, Pelangia, for the fish — a decision that reflects characters setting it apart from Melanotaenia and the other rainbowfish genera. Pelangia is still monotypic, with mbutaensis its only species, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, records it as Pelangia mbutaensis Allen, 1998.

The genus name comes from the Indonesian word 'pelangi,' meaning rainbow — a nod to the family's common name; the specific epithet mbutaensis refers to the type locality at Lake Mbuta. The fish belongs to the order Atheriniformes, family Melanotaeniidae — the rainbowfishes and blue eyes — which radiate across New Guinea, the surrounding islands, and Australia. Pelangia sits among the New Guinea lineages, but as a single-species genus from a remote and rarely sampled basin, its relationships to its neighbours remain little studied.

Because the species was described in its own genus and has never been reclassified, no parenthetical authority is used. Hobbyists know it almost entirely through Allen's original description and a handful of aquarium-literature mentions; it has no broad presence in the trade, and most of what is recorded about it traces back to that single 1998 paper.

Morphology

Pelangia mbutaensis is a small rainbowfish, reaching a maximum of roughly 2.5 in and usually less than 2 in in length. The body is laterally compressed and elongate, with depth that increases as the fish ages and is slightly greater in adult males than in females — a modest version of the body-deepening seen across the family.

In keeping with the Melanotaeniidae, the species carries two dorsal fins set very close together, the first much smaller than the second. Mature males develop a higher first dorsal fin that, when depressed, overlaps the origin of the second dorsal — a useful sexing character — while females retain smaller, more rounded dorsal and anal fins. The colour is understated by rainbowfish standards: the body is yellowish-tan above, grading to silvery-white on the lower half of the sides. Larger males show scattered yellow flecks along the mid-side, and the fins are mostly translucent apart from a dusky grey pigment on the first dorsal fin.

There is no bold lateral stripe, no two-tone flank, none of the saturated reds or blues that make relatives such as Melanotaenia boesemani aquarium favourites. Among rainbowfishes that plainness is itself diagnostic, and it was part of what marked the fish as unusual when Allen first examined it. Bayesian length-weight estimates derived from relatives (a ≈ 0.00389, b ≈ 3.12 on total length) are the only quantitative body figures on record, FishBase carrying no formal maximum-size or maturity datum beyond the description's roughly 2.5 in.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Lake Mbuta basin, about 5 mi inland from Etna Bay in what was then Irian Jaya and is now the Indonesian province of West Papua. 'Lake' Mbuta is something of a misnomer: rather than open water, it is a roughly circular swampy basin ringed by low mountains, mostly overgrown with swamp vegetation and broken up into numerous small ponds, creeks, and at least one small river.

Within this system Pelangia mbutaensis was collected only from a single small, clear but darkly tannin-stained, relatively fast-flowing freshwater creek running beneath a near-closed forest canopy. The bottom there was mainly mud with occasional rocks and log debris, and aquatic vegetation was sparse. Recorded water conditions at the type locality were a temperature of about 77 °F and a pH of 6.4 — warm, soft, and acidic blackwater typical of shaded lowland forest creeks, and a marked contrast to the hard, alkaline lake water that several better-known rainbowfishes inhabit. FishBase characterises the fish as benthopelagic in fresh water, with a recorded depth of around 7 ft.

In this creek the species co-occurred with the much more widespread Melanotaenia goldiei, which outnumbered it by roughly three to one; even so, Allen found Pelangia relatively common at the site. One known basin, one sampled creek — that is the defining fact of the fish's ecology. Its entire documented world is a single small drainage behind Etna Bay.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Pelangia mbutaensis, and the cache notes do not record a wild diet, so much of what can be said is inferred from its family and habitat rather than from direct observation — the data here are genuinely sparse. FishBase assigns an estimated trophic level of about 2.9 (±0.3), drawn from relatives rather than from gut-content analysis, which places the fish as a low-level omnivore.

Rainbowfishes generally are opportunistic feeders of the upper and middle water column, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and insects falling onto the surface — along with algae and plant material. In a shaded, fast-flowing, tannin-stained forest creek with sparse vegetation, drifting and surface-borne invertebrates would plausibly form the bulk of the diet, supplemented by whatever biofilm and detritus the substrate offers.

Because the species is essentially absent from the trade, there is no body of hobbyist feeding experience to draw on. A keeper encountering it would reasonably expect it to behave like other small rainbowfishes — accepting fine flake, small frozen and live foods, and grazing on biofilm — but this is extrapolation, not documented husbandry.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pelangia mbutaensis is clear enough to indicate the kind of male display common in rainbowfishes, even though courtship in this species has not been described in the wild. Adult males are slightly deeper-bodied than females and, most distinctively, carry a higher first dorsal fin that overlaps the origin of the second dorsal when folded down; they also show the scattered yellow mid-side flecks absent in females. Females retain smaller, rounded dorsal and anal fins.

In rainbowfishes generally, males stake out small display areas and court females with fin-flaring and heightened colour, often most intensely in the early-morning hours. Whether Pelangia performs the flickering pale 'courtship band' seen in many Melanotaenia is not recorded; its muted colouration suggests any such display would be far less conspicuous than in the brightly marked members of the family.

Beyond the dimorphic features Allen noted in the type description, the specifics of pairing, courtship sequence, and spawning behaviour remain undocumented. The fish has simply not been studied or bred closely enough for any of that to be described.

Breeding

There is no published account of Pelangia mbutaensis spawning, in the wild or in captivity, and the research cache records no breeding data — so this section is necessarily cautious and largely framed by family-level patterns rather than species-specific observation.

Rainbowfishes as a group are egg-scattering plant-spawners with no parental care. Females typically release small numbers of adhesive eggs over many days, the eggs hanging by fine filaments from fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or (in aquaria) spawning mops, and hatching after roughly a week or more depending on temperature; adults offer no care and will eat eggs and fry. FishBase rates the species' resilience as medium, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years, a figure derived from life-history relatives rather than from direct reproductive data.

Pelangia probably follows this general mode, but the clutch size, egg characteristics, incubation period, and fry requirements specific to it are unknown. The fish is Critically Endangered and effectively absent from the hobby, so no captive-breeding programme or aquarist spawning log exists to fill the gaps. Its breeding biology, in short, has not been documented.

In the aquarium

Pelangia mbutaensis is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the ornamental trade, and the few literature references to it are scientific or archival rather than husbandry accounts. Its low fishing vulnerability (about 10 on FishBase's 0–100 scale) reflects its small size and obscurity rather than any history of collection for hobbyists. A keeper is far more likely to encounter the name in a rainbowfish checklist than to find the fish for sale.

Were it ever maintained, its wild parameters would point the way: warm water around 77 °F, soft and acidic at roughly pH 6.4, mimicking the tannin-stained forest creek of the type locality — conditions quite different from the hard, alkaline setups suited to lake-dwelling rainbowfishes. As a small, sociable rainbowfish it would presumably do best in a group, in a planted tank with gentle to moderate flow, subdued lighting, and a tannin-darkened, blackwater character. These are reasonable inferences from habitat and family, not tested recommendations.

Given the Critically Endangered status and single tiny range, deliberate collection for the aquarium would be irresponsible in any case. The fish belongs to conservation concern and field study, not the tank, and it appears here for completeness of the family record rather than as a husbandry candidate.

Conservation

Pelangia mbutaensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1ab(iii), with the assessment dated 4 December 2019 (Red List version 2025-2). The listing turns on geography: the species is known only from the single Lake Mbuta basin behind Etna Bay, an extremely restricted extent of occurrence, combined with an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. With essentially one drainage to its name, the fish has no outlying population to buffer it against local disturbance, which is exactly the situation criterion B1 is designed to flag.

The pressures on such a narrowly endemic blackwater creek species are the familiar ones for lowland New Guinea forest habitats — degradation of the swampy basin and its feeder creeks, with any logging, clearance, or hydrological change in the catchment capable of affecting the whole known population at once. The species is Not Evaluated under CITES and CMS. Because it is small, obscure, and outside the aquarium trade, collection pressure is not the concern; habitat integrity is.

Almost everything here depends on one place. Protect the Lake Mbuta basin and its forest creeks and you protect the species; any monitoring or field re-survey would be worth doing simply because so little has been recorded since Allen's 1998 description. Pelangia mbutaensis is a reminder of how much of New Guinea's freshwater fauna is both narrowly endemic and thinly known.
