Pseudomugil paludicola is a tiny, translucent blue-eye of the coastal swamplands straddling southern New Guinea and the northern tip of Cape York. As its name promises — paludis, the Latin for marsh — it is a fish of brackish mangrove creeks, rainforest streams near the sea, and coastal swamps, where it gathers in huge near-surface shoals. Barely 1.5 in long and only recently confirmed from Australian waters, it is a delicate, little-traded member of the blue-eye group rather than one of the showy aquarium-trade staples.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudomugil paludicola was described by Gerald R. Allen and Bruce A. Moore in 1981, in the Revue française d'Aquariologie et Herpétologie (volume 7, part 4, pages 105–108). The original description placed it in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes; it now sits in the family Pseudomugilidae, the blue-eyes, within the order Atheriniformes. The type locality is a small creek in rainforest about 3 mi inland from Tureture Village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea, at roughly 9°07′S, 143°01′E. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name as Pseudomugil paludicola Allen & Moore, 1981.

The genus name Pseudomugil combines the Greek pseudes, 'false', with the Latin mugil, 'grey mullet', a reference to a superficial resemblance these small atheriniforms were once thought to bear. The specific epithet paludicola is built from the Latin paludis (marsh or swamp) and -cola (inhabitant) — a fish of swampy coastal lowlands. The English common name follows directly as 'Swamp blue-eye'; the species is also marketed in the hobby as the 'Yellow Fin Blue-eye Rainbowfish'.

The blue-eyes are a small-bodied radiation centred on New Guinea and northern Australia, named for the iridescent ring of colour around the eye that gives many species their shimmer. Within that group P. paludicola stands out for its slender translucence and swamp-and-estuary ecology rather than for any single striking feature.

Morphology

This is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1.5 in TL (after Allen 1991), while Fishes of Australia gives a figure of roughly 1 in SL — the two measures are broadly consistent given the difference between total and standard length. The body is slender and laterally compressed, and the fish is largely translucent: a clear bluish body over a silvery head and abdomen, with yellowish pelvic fins. As in other blue-eyes the dorsal fin is divided into two, and the meristic counts are modest — three to four dorsal spines, six to seven dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine, and eleven to fourteen anal soft rays.

Colour is subtle rather than bold. Males carry the more developed finnage and brighter tones: longer dorsal-fin rays, a yellowish leading edge on the dorsal fin, and a bluish hue along the dorsal surface. Females are smaller and plainer, with a yellowish caudal-fin base and pale-yellow leading anal-fin rays. The dimorphism is modest in absolute terms but clear once the sexes sit side by side — the rule across Pseudomugil, not the exception. The appeal of a glassy little shoaling fish like this lies in numbers and the catch of light on its fins, not in saturated pigment.

Habitat

The Swamp blue-eye lives in the coastal lowlands along the southern side of central-southern New Guinea and, as confirmed more recently, the northern Gulf of Carpentaria coast of Australia. In New Guinea it occupies the swamplands of the lower Binaturi, Pahoturi, and Morehead river systems of south-western Papua New Guinea, and the range extends west through southern West Papua Province, Indonesia, to around Sorong, with the original distribution noted as possibly reaching the Vogelkop (Bird's Head) Peninsula. On the Australian side it has been recorded from the Weipa region — the Embley, Mission, and Wenlock Rivers — in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland (Lawler et al. 2024), and may also occur on Sabai Island in Torres Strait.

The fish is a creature of the land-sea margin. It inhabits brackish mangrove creeks, rainforest streams close to the sea, and coastal swamps, penetrating inland only to just beyond the high-tide limit, and is described as both a freshwater and estuarine species. In these waters it often forms huge near-surface shoals. The hobby literature characterises the typical habitat as clear, slow-flowing forest streams and swampy coastal areas rich in aquatic vegetation, in the tributaries of the Pahoturi, Morehead, and Binaturi rivers.

Reported water conditions are tropical and slightly alkaline: temperatures of 79–86 °F, pH around 7.0–8.0, and hardness up to about 20 dH (FishBase) — the warm, mineral-influenced coastal swamps the species favours. The known latitudinal band sits around 9–10°S.

Feeding

Pseudomugil paludicola is a small omnivore that feeds at and just below the water surface, with a trophic level estimated at about 3.2 — the level of a small predator of invertebrates rather than a plant grazer. In the wild its food is the drift of tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates available in vegetated swamp and stream margins, taken from the upper water column where its shoals gather.

In the aquarium it is treated as a surface-and-upper-level micro-predator. Hobby care guides recommend a varied diet of small-grade dried flakes and granules supplemented with live and frozen foods — cyclops, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworms — sized to suit a fish only a few centimetres long. Its natural prey is small and constantly available, so frequent small feedings suit it better than occasional large ones. Nothing suggests it takes much plant material; it is a tiny insectivore working the surface film among vegetation.

Mating

As in other blue-eyes, courtship in Pseudomugil paludicola is a matter of male display rather than pair bonding. Males are the more colourful and longer-finned sex, and in a shoal they court passing females with fin-spreading displays, the yellowish dorsal edge and bluish sheen showing to best advantage. Data on the species' specific courtship behaviour in the wild are sparse, and most of what aquarists describe is generalised from the closely related, better-studied blue-eyes.

The species spawns continually rather than in a single seasonal event: under good conditions a female deposits a small number of eggs each day over a span of several days. Spawning is reported to be most productive at the warmer end of the temperature range the fish tolerates. Eggs are laid onto fine-leaved plants or onto artificial spawning media — java moss, wool mops — to which they attach.

One practical caution from the hobby is that Pseudomugil paludicola will hybridise with other Pseudomugil species, so anyone intending to breed it should keep it as the only blue-eye in the tank.

Breeding

The Swamp blue-eye is an egg-depositing, plant-spawning species with no parental care. Rather than producing a single clutch, a conditioned female releases a few eggs daily over several days, scattering them onto fine-leaved plants or spawning mops such as java moss or wool mops placed near the surface. Spawning is encouraged at the upper end of the temperature range.

The adhesive eggs hatch in roughly 7 to 14 days depending on temperature, the incubation period shortening with warmth. Because the adults offer no care and will readily eat both their own eggs and the resulting fry, breeders move the spawning medium or the collected eggs to a separate rearing container. The newly hatched fry are minute and hang near the surface; they require very small first foods — powdered fry foods, microworms, and baby brine shrimp once large enough — before growing on.

Production is slow and steady from a continually spawning group, not the single-clutch burst of some egg-scattering fishes — easy on the patient aquarist, but it demands separate rearing space to bring fry through.

In the aquarium

Pseudomugil paludicola is a peaceful, shoaling species best kept in groups of eight to ten or more, where it occupies the middle and upper levels of the tank. Hobby sources rate it as a beginner-to-intermediate fish with a lifespan of up to around five years, hardy enough for a well-maintained planted aquarium but small and delicate enough that tankmates must be chosen with care — it should not be housed with anything large or boisterous enough to bully or outcompete a 1.5 in shoaling fish.

Water should be warm and around neutral to slightly alkaline, matching its coastal-swamp origins: temperatures of 79–86 °F (about 79–86 °F), pH in the range of 6.0–8.0, and moderate hardness (GH around 5–20). A planted tank with open surface space suits its near-surface shoaling habit and shows the catch of light on the males' fins to best effect. As a varied feeder it does well on quality small dried foods supplemented with live and frozen cyclops, daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

The species is genuinely rare in the aquarium trade, so encounters with it are uncommon. Aquarists keeping it for breeding should remember its readiness to hybridise and keep it as the sole Pseudomugil in the system.

Conservation

Pseudomugil paludicola is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment by Palmer-Newton carried out in 2020 (assessment dated 4 June 2020; citation e.T161077447A161077455). The Least Concern listing reflects a species with a relatively broad coastal distribution spanning southern New Guinea and, as now confirmed, northern Australia, rather than a narrowly endemic fish confined to a single threatened basin.

Its swamp, mangrove-creek, and coastal-stream habitats are widespread along the land-sea margin of the region, and the species' habit of forming large near-surface shoals suggests locally abundant populations. It is of no fishery interest — FishBase records it as harmless with low fishing vulnerability — and its rarity in the aquarium trade means collecting pressure on wild stocks is minimal.

As with many small lowland fishes here, the long-term concerns are habitat-level pressures — drainage, coastal development, and changes to estuarine systems — rather than direct exploitation. For now the available assessment places it firmly in Least Concern.
