The Vogelkop blue-eye is among the rarest of all rainbowfishes — a tiny, delicately coloured blue-eye known from a single small lake basin on the Bird's Head Peninsula of Indonesian West Papua, described from one specimen and refound only after years of searching. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered, its entire wild range a handful of streams feeding Lake Ayamaru that together cover perhaps twenty square kilometres. In the hobby it survives almost entirely as captive-bred stock, a nano-tank fish whose finnage is etched with red and whose females carry the reticulated pattern that gave the species its name.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudomugil reticulatus was described by Gerald R. Allen and Walter Ivantsoff in 1986, in a paper on two new blue-eyes from New Guinea published in the Revue française d'Aquariologie Herpétologie. The description rested on a single holotype collected in 1982 from a rainforest stream a couple of kilometres east of Ajamaru (Ayamaru) Village, in the middle of the Vogelkop Peninsula of what is now the Indonesian province of West Papua. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Pseudomugil reticulatus Allen & Ivantsoff, 1986; because it was described in Pseudomugil, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus Pseudomugil comprises the blue-eyes, small surface-oriented atheriniform fishes of New Guinea and northern Australia. Older literature placed the blue-eyes within the rainbowfish family Melanotaeniidae, and some hobby sources still do, but current classification — followed by the Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, and the IUCN — places them in their own family, Pseudomugilidae. The genus name combines the Greek pseudes, 'false', with the Latin mugil, 'grey mullet', a reference to a superficial resemblance; the specific epithet reticulatus, 'net-like', describes the reticulated body and fin pattern, which is most strongly expressed in females.

There is one trap in the taxonomic history. A later report of P. reticulatus from the Timika region (Ivantsoff and colleagues, 1997) turned out to be a different fish, since described as the separate species Pseudomugil ivantsoffi. The genuine P. reticulatus is therefore restricted to the Lake Ayamaru drainage and is not the same as the Timika-region blue-eyes.

Morphology

Pseudomugil reticulatus is tiny, reaching only about 1 in in standard length according to Allen's New Guinea field-guide material. In build it is a typical blue-eye: slender and fusiform, with large eyes, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and the divided dorsal fin characteristic of the genus. Reported fin counts are three dorsal spines and around nine dorsal soft rays, no anal spines, and roughly twelve anal soft rays.

The coloration is subtle. Hobby observations describe a brownish body with a silvery abdomen, a yellow patch on the chest, a reddish head, and pinkish-red ventral fins, with red lines edging the dorsal and anal fins and marking the lobes of the caudal fin. The defining feature for which the fish is named is the reticulated, net-like pattern over the body and fins; this is more strongly developed in females, whose fins also tend toward yellow. As with other blue-eyes the colours are most vivid in displaying, well-conditioned fish and on a dark substrate, and they can look washed out under poor conditions.

Because the species is so rarely available and was originally known from very few specimens, detailed morphometric data are sparse, and most descriptive notes trace back to Allen's original and field-guide accounts rather than to a large measured series.

Habitat

The Vogelkop blue-eye is endemic to small streams feeding Lake Ayamaru (also spelled Ajamaru), a karstic lake system on the central Bird's Head (Vogelkop) Peninsula of West Papua, Indonesia, at low latitude just south of the equator. The IUCN restricts the species to tributary streams flowing into this lake; its estimated extent of occurrence is only about twenty square kilometres, and it is effectively known from a single location.

The habitat is described as small, clear-water streams running through secondary forest, with sand and mud bottoms and minimal aquatic vegetation, though the type material came from a well-vegetated rainforest stream and some hobby accounts mention tannin-stained as well as clear waters. The species lives in fresh, pelagic, tropical conditions near the surface. Reported aquarium-care water values give a broad pH window of roughly 4.5 to 7.5 and temperatures of about 72–81 °F, but these are husbandry figures rather than measured field chemistry, and precise wild water data are sparse.

Some hobby sources additionally cite records from the Saengga and Manggosa rivers of the Bomberai Peninsula, draining toward Bintuni Bay. These are not corroborated by the IUCN assessment, which confines the species to the Lake Ayamaru tributaries; the Bomberai records should be treated with caution and may represent confusion with related blue-eyes.

Feeding

As a small surface-oriented blue-eye, Pseudomugil reticulatus is a micropredator and opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates and other tiny food items from the upper water column. Direct dietary studies from the wild are lacking, but its body form — upturned mouth, large eyes, slender shape — is that of a fish that feeds at and just below the surface on drifting and emerging invertebrates, in keeping with the genus generally. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.2.

In the aquarium it is reported to accept micropellets and finely crushed flake along with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, and microworms. Like other nano blue-eyes it does best on small, frequent feedings of varied, appropriately sized foods, and a live or frozen component helps maintain colour and breeding condition. Its small mouth means that food size, more than food type, is the limiting factor.

Mating

Pseudomugil reticulatus is an egg-depositing, plant-spawning fish with no parental care, in the manner typical of blue-eyes. Detailed accounts of courtship in this particular species are limited by its rarity, but hobby breeding reports and the behaviour of close relatives indicate that males display to females with fin-flaring and heightened colour, the red fin edges and reticulated pattern becoming most prominent during courtship.

Spawning occurs over fine-leaved plants, mosses, or spawning mops, into which the female deposits eggs. Rather than producing a single large clutch, females release a few eggs daily over a span of several days — a continuous, trickle-spawning pattern that rewards keeping conditioned groups together rather than isolated pairs. The species is reported to readily eat its own eggs and fry, so the eggs are vulnerable in the spawning tank without protection or removal.

Breeding

Breeding follows the standard blue-eye template. Conditioned adults deposit small adhesive eggs onto fine-leaved plants, java moss, or synthetic spawning mops, a few at a time over consecutive days. Because the adults will consume eggs and fry and offer no parental care, breeders typically transfer the mops or harvested eggs to a separate rearing container.

Incubation is reported at around ten days, varying with temperature — warmer water shortens the period, as in related blue-eyes. The fry are extremely small at hatching and need correspondingly tiny first foods: infusoria or Paramecium for roughly the first five days before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms. This requirement for very fine first foods, combined with the species' small size and rarity in the trade, makes it a project for an experienced nano-fish breeder rather than a beginner.

Reported lifespan is short, up to about three years, which is typical for a small blue-eye. The continuous, low-volume spawning pattern means that maintaining the species in captivity is a matter of steady ongoing production from a conditioned group rather than large one-off hatches — a model that has nonetheless kept the species available in the hobby despite its precarious status in the wild.

In the aquarium

The Vogelkop blue-eye is a peaceful nano-tank fish suited to a small, well-planted, mature aquarium kept in a group of eight or more; like other blue-eyes it shows its best colour and behaviour in a shoal, with males displaying against one another. It is seldom seen in the trade — when available it is almost always tank-bred — and is best regarded as a specialist's fish rather than a community-store staple.

Reported aquarium water parameters are a wide pH range of about 4.5 to 7.5, general hardness around 5 to 12, and temperatures of roughly 72–81 °F (72 to 82 °F). Stable, clean water and gentle filtration matter more than hitting exact numbers; the small adult size means a modest, densely planted tank with floating cover and fine-leaved plants suits it well and also provides spawning sites. Given its size and timidity it should be kept only with similarly small, peaceful, non-competitive tankmates, or — better, for a fish this scarce and this easily out-competed — in a single-species setup.

Because wild populations are Critically Endangered and the aquarium stock is captive-bred, buying tank-bred fish and keeping the breeding lines going is the responsible way to keep this species. For a fish this scarce in nature, its continued presence in the hobby is itself a small conservation asset.

Conservation

Pseudomugil reticulatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered under criterion B1ab(v) (ver. 3.1). The assessment was carried out on 5 December 2019 by Allen, Kadarusman, and Unmack and published in 2020. The listing rests on the species' extraordinarily restricted range — an extent of occurrence of only about twenty square kilometres, effectively a single location in the streams feeding Lake Ayamaru — together with an ongoing, if unquantified, decline in mature individuals.

The species has always been known from very few wild fish: the 1982 holotype, fifteen further specimens collected in 1999 and held at the Western Australian Museum, and a small number of individuals refound at a single site in 2019 only after extensive searching. The principal threats are predation and competition from introduced fishes in the lake system — including snakehead (Channa striata), tilapia (Oreochromis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and goldfish (Carassius auratus) — alongside predation by birds and water-level fluctuations that have worsened since the 1990s and are exacerbated by drought and climate change.

One mitigating factor is that the species is maintained and traded internationally from captive-bred populations rather than wild collection, so the ornamental trade is not currently a direct drain on the wild fish. Given how little buffer a single-basin endemic has against habitat change and invasive predators, however, the wild population remains highly vulnerable, and the captive lines are an important insurance against loss in nature.
