The Pacific blue-eye is one of Australia's most widespread small native fishes — a slender, partly transparent rainbowfish relative little more than finger-length, named for the bright blue ring around its eye. It turns up everywhere from the salt marshes and mangrove creeks of the eastern coast to clear inland forest streams, tolerating everything from pure freshwater to near-marine salinity, and the IUCN rates it Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudomugil signifer was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1866. It is the type species of the genus Pseudomugil, the blue-eyes, which today is placed in the family Pseudomugilidae within the order Atheriniformes — a lineage closely allied to, but distinct from, the true rainbowfishes of the family Melanotaeniidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Pseudomugil signifer Kner, 1866; because the species has always been held in Pseudomugil, no parenthetical authority is used.

The species is strikingly variable. FishBase records at least fifteen geographical varieties across its long latitudinal range, differing in fin shape, colour, and proportions — yet morphological study places them all in a single species rather than a complex of separate ones. That blend of wide range and heavy local variation has long drawn the attention of taxonomists and aquarists alike.

The genus name Pseudomugil combines the Greek pseudes, 'false', with the Latin mugil, 'grey mullet' — literally 'false mullet', a reference to a superficial resemblance. The specific epithet signifer is Latin for 'standard-bearer' or 'ensign', alluding to the fish's prominent, flag-like fins.

Morphology

Pseudomugil signifer is a small, elongated, laterally compressed fish. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 3 in SL, though a common length nearer 1.5 in SL is more typical, and in aquaria most specimens settle at roughly 1.5–2 in. The body is slender and partly translucent, pale yellowish to olive over the back, with a silvery sheen on the operculum and belly. The diagnostic feature is the eye — a bright blue iris ring that catches the light and supplies both the common name and most of the fish's appeal.

Like other blue-eyes and the rainbowfishes, P. signifer carries two separate dorsal fins — a small anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior one — together with a forked caudal fin whose lobes are often rounded and edged in white. The paired and median fins can be drawn out into delicate filaments, most pronounced in adult males.

Sexual dimorphism is clear in mature fish. Males are slightly larger and far showier, developing extended, filamentous rays on the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins, with dark markings at the bases of the anal and dorsal fins; their finnage may flush orange during the breeding season. Females are plainer and shorter-finned. As with many small atheriniforms, colour rides on mood — brightest in a courting or competing male.

Habitat

The Pacific blue-eye is endemic to eastern Australia, ranging down the coast from the Embley River in far north Queensland south to Merimbula Lake in southern New South Wales. Across that span it occupies an unusually broad set of habitats: clear, cool, fast-flowing forest streams; lowland swamps and salt marshes; tidal mangrove creeks and fringing coastal mangrove; offshore islands; and even artificial environments such as the canal estates of the Gold Coast.

Behind that breadth is a wide physiological tolerance. The species runs from pure freshwater through brackish estuary to nearly marine salinity, which is how it holds on in tidal mangrove systems that shut out most other small natives. Water chemistry tracks the same span: FishBase reports a pH from about 5.5 to 7.8 depending on habitat, and a wild temperature range of roughly 59–82 °F, the low end reached in winter at the cooler southern limit.

Spanning both temperature and salinity gradients makes P. signifer one of the more adaptable small fishes in eastern Australia — which is much of the story behind its wide distribution and its secure conservation status.

Feeding

Pseudomugil signifer is a small, opportunistic omnivore that feeds mainly in the upper and middle water column. Its natural diet is dominated by small invertebrates and plankton — suspended and floating phytoplankton and zooplankton, together with small aquatic and surface-borne invertebrates. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with a micro-predator and grazer that takes tiny prey rather than larger animals.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding but limited by its small mouth. It readily accepts good-quality crushed flake and micro-pellets, and relishes small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, micro-worm, and Cyclops. A varied diet with a real live or frozen component improves both colour and breeding condition.

The fish are small and never stop moving, so several small feedings beat one large one, and their surface habit means floating or slowly sinking foods are taken most readily.

Mating

The Pacific blue-eye is an egg-depositing, plant-spawning species with no parental care. Males are polygamous and court continuously through the warmer daylight hours, displaying to females with raised, flag-like fins — the 'standard-bearer' behaviour that gives the species its epithet — and intensifying their colour, the finnage sometimes flushing orange in breeding condition. As in many blue-eyes, display is most vigorous where several males compete, so a male flushes brightest in the presence of rivals.

Spawning is protracted rather than episodic. Rather than releasing a single clutch, a female deposits a few eggs at a time over the course of several days, attaching each by sticky threads to plants or substrate. In the wild this spawning is seasonal, intensifying with the onset of the wet season and the warm-season rise in temperature and food.

One caution: Pseudomugil species hybridise readily with their congeners. To keep stock pure, breed P. signifer on its own rather than mixing blue-eyes in a spawning group.

Breeding

Pseudomugil signifer is oviparous and offers no parental care; indeed the adults will eat their own eggs and fry given the chance, so a dedicated breeding setup gives far better survival than a community tank. The standard hobby approach mirrors that used for rainbowfishes: condition a group well, then let them spawn into fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or onto synthetic spawning mops, which are then removed for separate rearing.

Females deposit a few sticky eggs daily across an extended spawning period rather than a single large batch, the eggs hanging from the spawning medium by fine adhesive threads. Incubation depends strongly on temperature, reported at roughly 10 to 21 days, shorter in warmer water. The newly hatched fry are tiny and hang near the surface. Usefully, they reportedly take baby brine shrimp and micro-worm almost at once, sparing the breeder the infusoria stage that fussier species demand.

Growth is slow and the fish is short-lived — around two years in captivity — so a colony lives or dies on regular spawning rather than on the longevity of larger rainbowfishes.

In the aquarium

The Pacific blue-eye is a peaceful, sociable shoaling fish that should be kept in a group — eight or more is a sensible minimum — where it occupies the middle and upper water and displays its best behaviour and colour. Most keepers rate it intermediate: hardy in its tolerances but small, and at its best in a stable, clean tank with gentle current. A planted setup with open swimming space and some surface movement suits it and brings out the males' daytime display.

Water chemistry can follow the species' wide natural envelope rather than any narrow target. Reported aquarium conditions are a pH of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 (the species tolerates down to about 5.5 and up to 7.8 in the wild), a moderate hardness of about 5 to 15 dGH, and a temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, commonly cited around 73–79 °F. Because the species naturally experiences cooler winter temperatures at the southern end of its range, it does not require the high heat some tropical fish demand.

Given its small size and peaceful nature, P. signifer is best kept with similarly small, gentle tankmates that will not outcompete it at feeding — other small rainbowfishes and blue-eyes (kept apart at breeding time to avoid hybridising), small rasboras, and peaceful micro-fishes. It should not be housed with large or boisterous fish that may bully or eat it.

Conservation

Pseudomugil signifer is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The rating rests on a wide coastal distribution, a broad spread of habitats from forest streams to tidal mangroves, and a high tolerance of varying temperature and salinity — together a buffer against the local threats that imperil narrowly endemic fishes.

Unlike many ornamental rainbowfishes confined to single lake systems, the Pacific blue-eye spans a long stretch of coastline and many independent catchments, so no single local pressure threatens the whole species. Its broad ecological tolerance also lets it persist in modified and artificial waters, including coastal canal systems, where more specialised natives disappear.

The species is widely bred in the aquarium hobby, and tank-bred stock is readily available, so collecting pressure on wild populations is modest. As with all native fishes, the chief regional concerns are habitat alteration, pollution, and the spread of introduced species in particular catchments, but at the species level P. signifer remains common and secure.
