Telmatherina antoniae is one of the sailfin silversides of Lake Matano, a deep, ancient lake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Evolutionary biologists know it far better than aquarists do. Its males come in discrete blue, yellow, and blue-and-yellow colour morphs, and the species has become a textbook case for how new species and stable colour polymorphisms can arise within a single lake. Endemic to the Malili lakes system, it is assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened, its narrow range now shadowed by an introduced predatory cichlid.

Taxonomy & naming

Telmatherina antoniae was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1991 from Lake Matano on Sulawesi. It belongs to the family Telmatherinidae, the sailfin silversides, a small family within the order Atheriniformes that reaches its greatest diversity in the ancient Malili lakes of central Sulawesi. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, lists the species as Telmatherina antoniae Kottelat, 1991; because it was described in Telmatherina, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus name Telmatherina combines the Greek telma, meaning swamp, with atherina, the classical Greek name for the silverside or smelt — literally a swamp-silverside. The specific epithet antoniae is a patronym honouring Antoinette Kottelat-Kloetzli, the wife of the describing author. The species is diagnosed within the genus by a suite of fine characters, including a posteriorly rounded second dorsal and anal fin, an anterior tip of the premaxilla that does not project, an edentulous palatine, roughly 14 to 17 predorsal scales, 33 to 34 scales in the longitudinal row, and 14 to 17 and a half branched anal rays.

In the speciation literature, T. antoniae is treated as a 'roundfin' sailfin silverside, and researchers recognise two sympatric forms — informally a 'large' and a 'small' form — that differ in body size and habitat use. That internal structure, plus the bold male colour polymorphism, is part of why it has been such a productive subject for studies of how diversity accumulates inside a single ancient lake.

Morphology

Telmatherina antoniae is a small, slender, silvery fish, reaching a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length in males, with maturity reached at around 2.5 in. Like other sailfin silversides it has the family's characteristic two dorsal fins and the somewhat elongate, laterally compressed body of a mid-water silverside; in T. antoniae the second dorsal and anal fins are rounded at the rear, one of the features used to separate it from its congeners.

What stands out in mature males is the colour pattern. Rather than varying continuously, males fall into discrete morphs — blue, yellow, and an intermediate blue-and-yellow form — visible in the field and the focus of detailed spectral study. These are not age or mood states but stable, co-occurring variants within one population. Females are far plainer, yet polymorphic in their own cryptic way, with subtle colour variation that has also been documented spectrally.

That split between bold male morphs and quieter female variation is unusual, and it is why the species is so identifiable in the wild: an observer can pick out blue and yellow males courting along the shoreline. Beyond the colour, the fish is a typical slender silverside, built for active swimming in open water and along the margins of a clear, mineral-rich lake.

Habitat

Telmatherina antoniae is endemic to Lake Matano, the deepest and oldest lake of the Malili lakes system in the Sulawesi highlands of Indonesia. Matano is an ancient tectonic lake, exceptionally clear and warm year-round, and it holds an endemic radiation of sailfin silversides and other fishes. The species occurs along rocky and sandy shorelines and in open water, where the clarity lets the visual courtship play out.

The water is clear, warm, and mineral-rich, with a high pH typical of the limestone-influenced Malili basin — close to the hard, alkaline conditions that support other Sulawesi endemics. Temperatures stay stable and tropical. Published temperature and pH figures at the species level are sparse; what can be said reliably is that the fish lives in the warm, alkaline, very clear water of Lake Matano.

The single-lake endemism is the defining fact of its ecology. As far as is known, T. antoniae lives nowhere but Lake Matano and its immediate system — which both concentrates its evolutionary interest and makes it vulnerable. One environmental shock to one lake reaches the entire global population.

Feeding

Telmatherina antoniae is a micropredator, taking small invertebrates and zooplankton from the water column. Its trophic level is estimated at around 3.2 — a small carnivore eating tiny animal prey rather than grazing plant material. In Matano's clear water it presumably hunts by sight, picking prey from open water and along the rocky and sandy margins.

Across an ancient-lake species flock, fine differences in diet and habitat use are thought to help so many related forms coexist. The 'large' and 'small' forms of T. antoniae differ in habitat use, and differences in where and how forms feed are part of the ecological backdrop to its diversification.

Published diet breakdowns specific to this species are limited, so the most defensible summary is FishBase's trophic picture: a small invertebrate-feeder holding a mid-level predatory niche in the Lake Matano food web.

Mating

Mating turns on male courtship display, and this is where the colour morphs come in. Males court females actively, and the blue, yellow, and blue-and-yellow morphs differ in courtship and mating success — which is what made the species a model for colour polymorphism and sexual selection. Because Matano is so clear, the signalling can be watched directly in the field.

The puzzle the species has helped illuminate is how multiple male morphs persist within one interbreeding population. Researchers have used T. antoniae as a case study in adaptive, potentially sympatric divergence: the idea that mate choice and ecological differences can drive populations apart, or hold stable variation, without geographic separation. Female preference, male competition, and morph-specific behaviour all feed into it.

Like other Telmatherinidae, the species gives no parental care. Reproduction is built around courtship, pairing, and the release of eggs rather than nest tending — the drama sits in the display and choice that precede spawning, not in any care of the eggs or young.

Breeding

Telmatherina antoniae is a substrate-spawning, egg-scattering silverside with no parental care, in keeping with the sailfin silversides generally. After courtship, pairs release eggs among the substrate or vegetation of the lake margins, and the adults do nothing further to tend them.

Species-specific breeding data — clutch sizes, incubation times, fry development — are not well documented in the accessible literature, and this article will not invent figures the sources do not support. What can be stated is the mode: adhesive, egg-scattered eggs typical of the family, no nest, no parental care, with reproduction driven by the courtship and morph-based mate choice described above.

Because the species is studied mostly in the wild and in research settings rather than kept as an aquarium fish, the captive-breeding accounts available for popular hobby rainbowfishes simply do not exist here. T. antoniae spawns by the general silverside pattern; the finer details remain sparsely recorded.

In the aquarium

Telmatherina antoniae is rarely kept, and it is a specialist's fish, not a community rainbowfish. The fishroom knows it far less well than the literature does, and reliable husbandry accounts are scarce. Anyone keeping it would be working by analogy with other Sulawesi sailfin silversides and with the lake's known conditions.

The target would be Matano's water: clear, warm, hard, and alkaline, with stable tropical temperatures, a distinctly alkaline and mineral-rich chemistry, and very clean, well-oxygenated water. As an active, schooling, open-water micropredator it needs a group, swimming room, and small live or frozen invertebrate foods. Soft, acidic water — the default many aquarists reach for — is the wrong target for a fish from a limestone-influenced ancient lake.

Given the Near Threatened status, single-lake endemism, and the pressures on Matano, this is not a fish to source casually from the wild. Its value is scientific and educational. Treat it as a Lake Matano endemic and a working example of evolution rather than ordinary aquarium stock.

Conservation

Telmatherina antoniae is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under range-based criteria that reflect its very restricted single-lake distribution. The entire known global range is Lake Matano and its system. A species confined to one ancient lake has little buffer against local change, so even modest threats translate into elevated extinction risk.

The best-documented threat is biological invasion. An introduced predatory cichlid — a flowerhorn-type fish now established in the lake — preys on and competes with the native sailfin silversides, and that pressure is cited again and again as a worry for the endemic fauna. An efficient non-native predator dropped into a closed community of evolutionarily naive endemics is exactly the shock against which a single-lake species has no refuge.

Development adds more pressure: nickel mining in the Lake Matano catchment is a recognised concern for water quality and habitat. A tiny natural range, an established invasive predator, and catchment-scale industrial pressure together underpin the Near Threatened listing and make Matano's sailfin silversides — T. antoniae among them — a conservation priority for the wider Malili lakes system.
