Taxonomy & naming
Albert Günther described this fish in 1864 as Heros labiatus, from specimens taken in Lake Managua, Nicaragua; the syntypes are held in the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH). Through much of the twentieth century it sat in the catch-all genus Cichlasoma, and older literature and aquarium labels still call it Cichlasoma labiatum. Its modern placement in Amphilophus Agassiz, 1859 follows Kullander and Hartel's 1997 revision, and Amphilophus labiatus (Günther, 1864) is the valid combination in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus's earliest names are tangled: Kullander and Hartel searched in vain for type material of Agassiz's Amphilophus froebelii, and Villa (1976) folded Cichlasoma dorsatum into Amphilophus labiatus.
The name is unusually literal. Amphilophus combines the Greek amphi ('on both sides') and lophos ('crest'); labiatus is Latin for 'lipped' — a pointer to the enlarged lips of the genus's type species, whose front edges Günther described as 'forming a moveable subtriangular flap.' Nicaraguan fishers call it the mojarra picuda (FishBase).
The real interest is context. Amphilophus labiatus is one of two long-recognized species — the other being the Midas cichlid, Amphilophus citrinellus — at the heart of what George Barlow and John Munsey (1976) named the red devil–Midas–arrow cichlid species complex. Early workers split this wildly variable group into more than half a dozen nominal species before later authors lumped most back together; the pendulum has since swung again, and more than a dozen Amphilophus are now recognized across the Nicaraguan great lakes and the volcanic crater lakes, several described only in the 2000s by Stauffer, McKaye, McCrary and colleagues.
Morphology
Amphilophus labiatus is a deep-bodied, powerfully built cichlid with a pointed head, a steep forehead, and — in classic specimens — the thick, fleshy lips its name advertises. Males develop a pronounced nuchal hump on the forehead, seasonal in the wild but often permanent and exaggerated on aquarium fish. Maximum size depends on origin: wild fish are usually cited near 9.5 in, FishBase lists a maximum of 11 in total length at about 444 g, and well-fed aquarium animals are reported larger still, up to 15 in — best treated as captive-inflated rather than typical of the lake.
Color is famously two-faced. Most wild fish are an unremarkable grey-green, often carrying the dark dorsolateral blotches common across the complex, but a gold morph sheds that dark pigment and turns brilliant orange, red, yellow, or white — the trait that named the fish and, through selective breeding, produced the saturated red and orange strains of the trade. Dimorphism is real but modest in kind: males grow larger with longer dorsal and anal fins and a bigger hump, females stay smaller and shorter-finned, so the sexes are told apart by build rather than by any separate breeding dress.
Telling Amphilophus labiatus from the Midas cichlid, Amphilophus citrinellus, in hand is genuinely hard, and the lips are no shortcut — lip thickness varies and tank-bred fish often lose it entirely. Better cues are a frenum, the more slender, elongate body, and a nuchal hump that runs larger and more massively built in Amphilophus citrinellus. Decades of deliberate hybridization mean many 'red devils' sold today are not pure (Seriously Fish; Barlow & Munsey 1976).
Habitat
Amphilophus labiatus is endemic to Nicaragua's two great lakes — Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) and Lake Managua (Xolotlán), linked by the Tipitapa River; the Catalog of Fishes places it on the Atlantic slope of Nicaragua and adds scattered records attributed to Costa Rica. These are large, shallow, warm tropical lakes — Lake Nicaragua spans roughly 8,000 km2 yet averages only about 43 ft deep. The fish stays in the lakes themselves, rarely entering rivers, and keeps close to submerged rocky areas and crevices where it forages and breeds. FishBase gives a wild temperature band of about 82–91 °F (82–91 °F), and the basin water is alkaline and mineral-rich. This is a turbid, productive lowland lake rather than a clear rift lake: visibility is limited and the substrate is heavily worked.
Well beyond that native range, the red devil has become a problem fish. Released by aquarists, it is established in Hawaii and Puerto Rico (USGS NAS), and the Catalog of Fishes also lists introductions in Hong Kong and Australia. Aggressive, expanding invasive populations are documented in Indonesian lakes such as Sentani (Ohee et al. 2018, 2020) — a measure of how adaptable and durable the species is once loose.
Feeding
The red devil is a robust generalist near the middle of the food web — FishBase puts it at a trophic level of about 3.5. In the wild it takes small fish, snails, insect larvae, worms, and a broad range of other bottom-dwelling animals, and studies of invasive populations add algae and plant matter to the list. Its heavy build, strong jaws, and the molariform pharyngeal teeth seen in some Midas-complex fish suit an animal that can crush snails and shells as easily as it snaps up soft prey. In a tank this catholic appetite makes it an easy, indiscriminate feeder that does well on a quality cichlid staple plus vegetable matter; live feeder fish and high-fat red meats are unnecessary and best avoided.
The enlarged lips are more than ornament. Hypertrophied lips have evolved again and again in cichlids that feed by pressing the mouth to rock and suction-extracting invertebrates from crevices, and the soft, flexible tissue is thought to improve that seal (Baumgarten, Machado-Schiaffino et al. 2015) — a plausible function in a fish that works among submerged rocks. That the trait varies so much, and nearly vanishes in tank-raised fish, suggests it is partly induced by a crevice-feeding life rather than fixed.
The complex's wider ecology is what made it scientifically famous. In small volcanic crater lakes, Midas-type ancestors have repeatedly split into deep-bodied benthic shore foragers and slender, open-water (limnetic) forms that track schools of silverside fish — divergence in body shape, pharyngeal jaws, and diet that has produced new endemic species (Barluenga et al. 2006). Amphilophus labiatus sits at the thick-lipped, shore-associated end of that ecological spectrum in the great lakes.
Mating
Red devils are monogamous, biparental cichlids: they form pairs, defend a shared territory, and orbit a single behavioural trait — aggression. Outside breeding the fish is territorial and quarrelsome; in spawning condition it becomes dangerous to anything nearby, its own mate included, which is why pairs are usually introduced young and watched closely, and why keeping two males together is rarely workable. A bonded pair clears and guards a patch of substrate around a chosen spawning surface and drives off all comers.
Across the complex, mate choice is strongly assortative — fish prefer to pair with their own kind — and classic laboratory work on the closely related Midas cichlid documented incompatibility and assortative mating between colour morphs (Baylis 1976). That preference is more than a curiosity: it helps keep these cichlids genetically distinct, and in the crater lakes it has helped drive speciation inside a single body of water, where pairing by body form and colour lets benthic and limnetic types diverge with no geographic barrier between them (Barluenga et al. 2006; Baylis 1976).
Breeding
Amphilophus labiatus is a biparental substrate spawner, not a mouthbrooder. A pair lays several hundred adhesive eggs on a flat rock, log, cave wall, or any solid surface — in aquaria commonly an inverted flowerpot or a slate — and both parents guard first the clutch and then the free-swimming fry, the female tending and fanning the eggs while the male patrols the perimeter. FishBase cites clutches of roughly 600–700 eggs, while studies of the invasive Lake Sentani population record fecundity from under 200 to over 2,700 eggs depending on female size (Ohee et al. 2020). Eggs hatch in two to three days; the wrigglers are moved to a pre-dug pit, become free-swimming within about a week, and are shepherded by both parents — a guarding drive so fierce it is exactly what makes a spawning pair so destructive toward tankmates.
In captivity the fish spawns readily once a compatible pair has settled into a large enough tank. Much of its breeding history has been deliberate: heavy crossing with the Midas cichlid and others produced the flowerhorn and the blood-parrot, and a side effect is that pure Amphilophus labiatus is now hard to source through the general trade. The same fecundity and parental drive that make it a model laboratory animal make it an easy — sometimes too easy — fish to breed at home.
In the aquarium
The verdict is simple: this is an exceptionally large, intelligent, and destructive cichlid that demands genuine commitment before the first fish is bought.
**Tank.** Seriously Fish sets a minimum footprint of 150 × 17.5 in (about 60 × 18 in), usually read as a 80–105 US gal tank for a single fish, and more for a pair or any community. Specialist keepers converge on a five-foot tank as the floor — roughly 75 gallons for a lone female, 100-plus gallons and a 5–6-foot footprint for a male — and flatly reject the widely repeated '55 gallon' care-sheet figure as far too small for a fish that routinely reaches a foot or more (wild-caught adults 10–12 in, well-fed aquarium fish commonly 14 in or beyond).
**Water.** Keep it warm but a touch below the wild extremes — Seriously Fish cites 70–79 °F for captive fish — neutral to moderately alkaline (pH 6.0–8.0) and moderately hard (roughly 90–450 ppm / 5–25 dH). This is a messy, prolific waste-producer, so heavy biological filtration is mandatory, weekly 40–50 % water changes are standard, and high dissolved oxygen (a powerhead or large airstones) helps.
**Décor and equipment.** Forget plants: the red devil excavates constantly, uproots everything, and rearranges rockwork for sport. Use large, immovable rocks and heavy driftwood — flowerpots or ceramic caves double as spawning sites — and guard or conceal every heater, inlet, and suction-cup fitting, because unprotected gear gets attacked. A secure, heavy lid is essential; fish this size jump.
**Tankmates.** Amphilophus labiatus is among the most aggressive cichlids in the hobby. Most are best kept alone or as a bonded pair; two males together is practically never viable at any tank size. In very large setups (well over 1,0.5 US gal) some keepers pair them with other robust Central American cichlids (Parachromis, Vieja) or big Loricariid catfish, but this is advanced, specimen-dependent territory, and some individuals tolerate no tankmate at all. A spawning pair turns hyper-territorial toward everything, including your hands during maintenance — this is not hyperbole.
**Getting a true pair.** Because introducing matched adults is dangerous — males routinely kill females put in with them — the standard route is to buy six or more juveniles, grow them on together, and let a pair form; once it does (the rest get harassed into a corner), remove the others promptly. Divider techniques for pairing adults exist, but they offer no guarantees.
**Diet.** A greedy, indiscriminate feeder. Make a quality cichlid stick or pellet the staple and supplement with earthworms, unshelled prawns (the shell's carotene supports orange-red colour), mussels, peas, and blanched spinach. Skip high-fat beefheart, which taxes digestion, and live feeder fish, which add disease risk for little nutritional benefit.
**Buying pure.** A large share of 'red devils' in the general trade are Midas cichlids, hybrids, or descendants of the flowerhorn and blood-parrot lines, so a buyer after the real thing should go to a specialist cichlid breeder who can document lineage — pure Amphilophus labiatus has become genuinely scarce.
**Personality.** For all that, experienced cichlidophiles hold it in high regard: captive fish habituate fast to their keeper, respond to a person at the glass, and show a degree of individual character and apparent recognition rarely seen in aquarium fish — an impressive animal for anyone honest about what it takes.
Conservation
Amphilophus labiatus has never been assessed on the IUCN Red List — FishBase records it as Not Evaluated (Version 2025-2), a direct Red List search returns nothing, and it carries no CITES listing. As a wide-ranging, fecund, adaptable fish spread across two large lakes it is not thought to be at risk; if anything the global story runs the other way, with released aquarium fish founding damaging invasive populations abroad. Nothing suggests aquarium collection threatens wild stock — the trade runs almost entirely on captive-bred and hybridized fish — and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low.
The honest framing is that the species looks secure while its home waters do not. Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua face serious, well-documented pressures: urban and industrial wastewater (Managua has historically discharged large volumes of raw sewage into its namesake lake), agricultural runoff, deforestation-driven erosion and sedimentation that cloud the water, and large-scale tilapia (Oreochromis) aquaculture that adds nutrient load and competition for native fishes (Polidoro & Wyatt 2025). These are basin-level threats to the whole fish community rather than to this one tough species — and the contrast is stark against co-occurring fauna, from the sawfish of Lake Nicaragua to narrow-range relatives in the crater lakes. One keeper-side note fits here: for all its toughness, the red devil is a messy, heavy feeder, and chronically poor water quality in captivity is tied to hole-in-the-head disease, so large, frequent water changes earn their keep.
That crater-lake context is where the real conservation concern lives. The same Midas-complex evolutionary engine that produced Amphilophus labiatus has, in tiny volcanic lakes, generated micro-endemic species with vanishingly small ranges and populations — the arrow cichlid, Amphilophus zaliosus, of Lake Apoyo, a textbook case of sympatric speciation (Barluenga et al. 2006), is assessed Critically Endangered and squeezed by shoreline development and falling water levels. Amphilophus labiatus is the durable, widespread end of that spectrum; its more specialized cousins are not, and they are the ones a warming, developing, increasingly polluted Nicaraguan landscape puts most at risk.
