Taxonomy & naming
George Albert Boulenger described this fish in 1916 as Tilapia margaritacea, in the fourth volume of his monumental Catalogue of the Fresh-Water Fishes of Africa, figuring it as plate 191. The type material came from the Nyong River at Akonolinga, in southern Cameroon, and the surviving syntypes are housed at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1914.5.27.12-15 and others). For most of the twentieth century the species sat, like dozens of other African substrate-spawning cichlids, in the deliberately broad genus Tilapia, and that placement was carried forward by the standard regional treatments of Teugels and Thys van den Audenaerde (1991) and by Stiassny and colleagues in the 2007 fishes-of-Lower-Guinea volume. The modern name dates to the molecular phylogeny of Dunz and Schliewen (2013), who showed that the old genus Tilapia was an artificial grab-bag and split it into several genera; the West and Central African biparental substrate-brooders, margaritacea among them, were gathered into the resurrected genus Coptodon Gervais, 1848. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid, with the masculine spelling Coptodon margaritaceus now in technical use though margaritacea remains the form in wide circulation. Within Coptodon the species belongs to the Lower-Guinean radiation of the genus, alongside such Cameroonian relatives as Coptodon camerunensis and the crater-lake endemics of the Coptodon kottae and Coptodon bythobates type.
Morphology
Coptodon margaritacea is a modestly sized, deep-bodied cichlid of typical tilapiine build, reaching about 7 in in total length though most specimens are smaller. The fin formula is diagnostic in the genus context: the dorsal fin carries 13 to 15 spines and 10 to 13 soft rays (a combined 25 to 27 dorsal elements), and the anal fin three spines and eight to ten soft rays. Boulenger's pearly epithet is the fish's most reliable field mark. Scattered bluish-white iridescent spots speckle the cheek and the operculum, and a distinct oblique pearly band crosses the dorsal fin, running from the base of the first spine back to the trailing edge of the soft rays. The outer-row jaw teeth are slender and rather pointed rather than broadly spatulate, and there are usually two rows of scales on the cheek, occasionally three. The gill rakers are few, nine or fewer on the lower limb of the first arch. Like most Coptodon, the body ground colour is an olive-to-brassy tan that intensifies in breeding fish, when both sexes typically darken and the contrasting markings sharpen. Sexual dimorphism in this species is poorly documented in the literature; as in its substrate-spawning congeners, the sexes are broadly similar in size and pattern and breeding adults of both sexes assume darker territorial coloration, with males often growing slightly larger and developing more produced fins.
Habitat
This is one of the most narrowly distributed cichlids in Cameroon: it is known only from the Nyong River basin in the south of the country, and the IUCN assessment records it from a maximum of five localities within that single drainage. The Nyong is a lowland equatorial river that rises on the southern Cameroon plateau and flows west to the Atlantic, draining a landscape of dense rainforest; it sits within the Southern Lower Guinea freshwater ecoregion, a region of soft, often tannin-stained 'blackwater' streams and rivers. The species is described as benthopelagic and an inhabitant of inland wetlands, occupying the river itself and its associated still and slow-flowing margins. Specific in-situ water chemistry has not been published for this fish, but the surrounding Lower-Guinean forest waters are characteristically warm and acidic to circumneutral and very soft, with temperatures in the rough range of 73–82 °F and pH from about 6.0 to 7.5 — the warm, lightly mineralised envelope typical of equatorial West-Central African forest rivers. As a fish of shallow river and wetland habitats rather than a lake, it lives in the upper few metres of the water column; no formal depth range has been measured, but the documented habitat is shallow inland wetland and river water.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study has been published for Coptodon margaritacea, and its trophic ecology must be read from the genus. Coptodon are the substrate-spawning, largely herbivorous and detritivorous tilapiines of West and Central Africa — fish that graze filamentous algae and aufwuchs from hard surfaces, browse soft aquatic and inundated terrestrial vegetation, and work over bottom detritus, taking small invertebrates opportunistically along the way. FishBase places this species low on the food web, at an estimated trophic level near 2.6, consistent with a herbivore-detritivore rather than a predator. Its slender, pointed outer jaw teeth and modest gill-raker count fit a fish that rasps and crops plant and algal material from substrates in the warm forest streams it inhabits. In its river community it functions as one of the small grazing cichlids of the benthos and vegetated margins.
Mating
Coptodon margaritacea is a pair-bonding, monogamous substrate spawner, and its reproductive behaviour follows the well-known template of the substrate-brooding tilapiines. Unlike the maternal mouthbrooders of the related genera Oreochromis and Sarotherodon, in which a single female incubates the brood in her mouth, Coptodon form stable male-female pairs that together hold and defend a territory on the bottom. Pair formation precedes spawning, and both partners participate in clearing and preparing a nest site on the substrate. The pair jointly defends the spawning territory against intruders, an arrangement that ties the two parents together through the spawning and into the period of brood care that follows. The detailed courtship of this particular species has not been described from the wild, but the open-substrate, pair-bonding mode reported on FishBase from the regional literature places it squarely within the biparental substrate-spawning tilapiine pattern.
Breeding
Breeding in Coptodon margaritacea is biparental open-substrate brooding: the pair spawns on a cleared surface, the adhesive eggs are deposited on the substrate rather than carried in the mouth, and both parents remain to guard and tend the clutch and the resulting fry. FishBase, drawing on the regional literature, records exactly this — an open substrate brooder with both parents guarding the brood. Specific fecundity for this species has not been published; substrate-spawning Coptodon are genus-typically moderately fecund, congeners depositing on the order of a few hundred to roughly a thousand eggs per spawning on a cleaned rock or pit, with the figure scaling to female size. After the eggs hatch, the parents move the wrigglers to pits and continue to shepherd the free-swimming fry as a guarded school, defending them until they disperse — the prolonged biparental care that distinguishes substrate-spawning tilapiines from their mouthbrooding relatives. Because the fish has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby, its captive breeding has not been documented, but there is no reason to expect it to depart from this standard Coptodon cycle.
In the aquarium
Coptodon margaritacea is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade. It is a range-restricted Cameroonian endemic with no commercial or ornamental fishery, so it does not appear in shops and has no body of hobbyist keeping or breeding experience behind it — any account of its husbandry is therefore extrapolated from its better-known Coptodon relatives rather than reported from real tanks. On that basis, a keeper who did obtain wild or research stock should expect a medium-small, territorial substrate-spawning cichlid that would need a footprint generous enough to let a pair hold a bottom territory — realistically a tank of 47 in or more for a pair, with more length again if kept with others, because substrate-spawning tilapiines become pugnacious and space-hungry around spawning. Warm, soft, gently acidic-to-neutral water matching its forest-stream origins would suit it best: roughly 75–82 °F and pH around 6.0 to 7.5, kept clean with regular water changes. A sand or fine-gravel bottom with flat stones and some robust cover would give a pair the surfaces they need to clear a nest, and as a grazing herbivore-detritivore it would take a vegetable-leaning diet — algae-based and spirulina foods, blanched greens, and the usual prepared fare. Plants and fine décor are likely to be uprooted or rearranged by a digging, territorial pair, as with most tilapiines. The honest summary is that this is a fish for a specialist or a research collection, not a community aquarium, and that its keeping is essentially undocumented.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Coptodon margaritacea as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010 (as Tilapia margaritacea), and remains flagged as needing updating. The justification is straightforward: the species is known only from a maximum of five localities in the Nyong basin in Cameroon, but no specific threats to it have been identified, so despite its narrow range it is listed as Least Concern rather than in a threatened category. Population trend is recorded as unknown and no formal threats are listed. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. That said, the assessment is more than fifteen years old, and a single-basin Lower-Guinean endemic is intrinsically vulnerable to localised pressures — deforestation in the Nyong catchment, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and habitat alteration are the kinds of changes that could erode a fish confined to one river system, even where no specific threat has yet been documented. As with many small, narrowly distributed African freshwater fishes, the reassuring Red List category rests on an absence of recorded threats rather than on positive evidence of a secure, stable population.
